So Thorin defeated the orcs in Moria.. So what happened between Thorin/Balin/dwarves defeating the Orcs in Moria and Balin post The Hobbit going back and it being reclaimed by the Orcs again? Did the dwarves abandon Moria for some reason or did the Orcs return and drive the dwarves back out?

Dáin slew Azog the Defiler in the Battle of Azanulbizar in front of the East Gate of Moria (winter of T.A. 2799). Thorin's younger brother Frerin was killed in the battle as were about half of those who participated from all seven of the Houses of the Dwarves. Thráin lost not only a son but also an eye. Dain caught a glimpse of Durin's Bane within Moria. Durin's Folk are too weak now to take on Durin's Bane. After burning the dead, the Dwarves of the other clans returned to their homes as did the Dwarves of the Iron Hills. The followers of Thrain returned with him South to Dunland for a time, later wandering in Eriador to settle in the Blue Mountains in 2802. In 2841 Thrain sets out with several companions to revisit Erebor. In 2845 he is captured and taken to Dol Guldur where his Ring is taken from him. Gandalf investigates Dol Guldur in 2850, discovering the captured Thrain who has forgotten his own identity, though he has held onto the key to the Secret Door that he gives to Gandalf. Thráin dies in Dol Guldur. In March of 2941 Thorin Oakenshield meets Gandalf in Bree. Plans are set in motion. In April, Bilbo Baaggins is recruited for the Quest of Erebor.
