Sorry if I've missed any previous discussion about this, but I just wanted to note how cool that Hobbit house in Pennsylvania is (link is on the main page.) Oh, to have the disposable income to dream and do such a thing! Take a look if you haven't seen it yet. WB

I am still trying to clean the drool off of my keyboard. Just imagine the things that any of us tornsibs could do if we had the disposable income. If only the well off knew how to spend their money, like building hobbit houses or Rivendell in place of just plain old mansions and estates. This person certainly did. I guess I will just have to settle for imagination. But it is soooo cool that someone did this. Once again - WOW!

I should write down the name and number of the architect, just in case we should ever win the lottery. :o) Completely unrelated: TPTB really should update the link on the home page for "discussion" so it leads to the new boards.

I really like this! Although that one picture shows a rock overhang right over one of the beds. Better not be very tall and prone to sitting up in one's sleep. Ouch!

This was an interesting look see. Fascinating. The window is wonderful. The door is interesting in its method of construction. The stone work around it is something to consider. And the interior archway work is quite beautiful. The whole project is just a labor of love. Great ideas here, thanks WonderB. This went into 'favorites' for all the references. My own plan now has more ideas. Gee, i had forgotten about our homepage.
"Tolkien, like Lewis, believed that, through story, the real world would become a more magical place, full of meaning. We see its patterns and colors in a fresh way. The recovery of a true view of the world applies both to individual things, like hills and stones, and to the cosmic - the depths of space and time itself. For in sub-creation, in Tolkien's view, there is a "survey" of space and time. Reality is captured on a miniature scale. Through stories like The Lord of the Rings, a renewed view of things is given, illuminating the homely, the spiritial, the physical, and the moral dimensions of the world." Tolkien and C.S. is that they used an already-existing wall, and incorporated local stones into it - and all that detail work! It does have the feel of the hall at Bag End, doesn't it!

but I wonder if anybody has ever tried to do a real-life version of Rivendell's Last Homely House. Sorry, I'm just so much more elf-oriented.

But Tolkien's desrciption is rather sketchy. Other than the Hall of Fire, he really didn't give us avery specific picture of the actual House of Elrond. I suppose the builder would have lots of room for speculation.

But they'd have to have an extra-strength HVAC/dehumidifier system to control the dampness.

Dead caves can be dry. It depends on where the water table is. I have been in caves that range from dusty to wading through waste deep water to get into the cave and sliding on my belly through mud to get around in it. That one was a real rush!
