Gollum and the caterpillar

This made me giggle -- from an article in the New York Times (full article linked below) about robots designed to resemble and imitate little critters (caterpillars, cockroaches, salamanders, and so on): The skin is a silicone rubber that goes by the brand name Dragon Skin, and its composition can be manipulated so that it can be leathery-tough or so supple and clammy that it gives a sense of what it must be like to shake hands with Gollum. Eventually, the researchers hope to build on the work of David Kaplan, a Tufts professor of biomedical engineering who has pioneered the creation of tough, flexible materials based on spider silk so that the creatures would be largely biodegradable. I love finding references to LOTR in the media -- as if certainly every one out there knows who Gollum is and that a normal reaction to shaking hands with him might be "OOOOK! Slimy!" Anyone recall reading roughly related references recently? http://www.nytimes.com/...ed=1&_r=1&hp

And your subject line would make a great title for a children's book...
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak. and the Unlucky Caterpillar :-) When I was listening to the radio last week, a commentator called Chris Trotter was on. The host casually mentioned that "Trotter" was the original name for the character who became Strider. Chris Trotter said yes, he knew that. Both host and guest impressed me with their LOTR knowledge :-)

Oh yes, a very recent media thing. That boy scout that was lost for four or so days was found alive by a dog named Gandalf. I thought that was great. Cute dog, too. I see it so often now on TV shows, or in the news... speaking of TV shows, a very new Simpson's episode rolled the battle of Helm's Deep and the siege of Minas Tirith into a long, three minute battle between Bart and Lisa in a fort against some people who worked at some recycling company or something... one of them came flying in on a red fell beast, they had ladders, Nelson came in to save the day and acted like Gandalf... and during this whole time the music from Track 13 of ROTK was playing (funny, I remember the track number, but I cannot remember the title... it was playing the song that goes "Ristais duath tellin i neder gurth renia..." etc). It's way awesome :)

but he was still hungry. On Tuesday he ate a wiggly worm. But he was still hungry. On Wednesday he choked on lembas bread... Any other ideas?

Resistance is futile, and no fun at all. :D
'I cannot read the furry letters,' said Frodo in a quavering voice. 'No,' said Gandalf, 'but I can.'
