*** Baggins Birthday Party Game: Hobbit Math!

Don't let that title frighten you away! This is a different kind of quiz - it's a mathematical scavenger hunt, in honor of Bilbo's and Frodo's birthdays on Monday! Find these numbers in the text of The Hobbit - you most likely remember them right off. Do the indicated math, and you should end up with a very special "anniversary": as of September 21st, the number of years it's been since the publication of The Hobbit. Have fun - and remember, do NOT leave the path, er, put the answers in your subject line! 1. Find the number of "white horses upon a red hill". 2. Multiply this by the number of daughters of the Old Took. 3. Now add to this the height, in feet, of the hidden side-door of the Lonely Mountain. 4. Subtract from this the number of Dwarves. 5. Now add the number of trees the "birds" are in, in the Goblins' song. 6. Finally, add the number of Rings found by Bilbo. Have fun!

I do struggle with numbers, but with the help of some friendly AI, I found the answers I'd forgotten and managed the adding and subtracting on my own just fine - using the old standbys of paper and pen. And just to be sure, I totted up using two options for question #1, making twice as many columns and numbers for myself, of course, but thinking you might be tricksy there, yesssss. That was fun, thank you! And now I believe I will take a walk and clear my brain. Mental and physical! That's what those of us who are not quite as old as "The Hobbit" - but getting there - require. Cheerio!

What a fun and original trivia hunt, Dernwyn! Thanks for doing this. I did my math, check it twice, and came up with 88, which seems right. What a watershed for literature for the publication of The Hobbit.
