Idle Idol Chatter Can't Post

Blake - pretty good performance. I don't really love him, but I see why a lot of other people do. He will definitely be the last guy in the competition.

Which of course is irrelevant because MELINDA will win this thing walking away. She was INCREDIBLE tonight. I am prepared to say that she is easily the best contestant that AI has EVER had. Easily.

Nos-phil-ratu was awful.

Chris R is so dirty and weird looking. Unimpressive performance.

Haley was actually pretty good. I'm not sure why the judges didn't like her.

Gina put me to sleep.

Jordin - pretty good. Any other year she may have had a real shot at winning the thing (see Melinda above).

Sanjaya - he was good tonight! The judges now seem unbelievable in their disdain for him. Why have they stopped giving him real comments? They look so bad for doing so, IMO. He was certainly better than Phil or Chris tonight.

Lakisha - really good. I love watching her, but again, she will fall short this year due to the greatness that is Melinda.

Danger Zone: Phil, Chris, one of the white girls.

I'll say Nos-phil-ratu gets the stake tonight.

Out of the darkness of my life, so much frustrated, I put before you the one great thing to love on earth: the Blessed Sacrament... There you will find romance, glory, honour, fidelity, and the true way of all your loves on earth, and more than that: Death: by the divine paradox, that which ends life, and demands the surrender of all, and yet by the taste (or foretaste) of which alone can what you seek in your earthly relationships (love, faithfulness, joy) be maintained, or take on that complexion of reality, of eternal endurance, which every man's heart desires.

Okay, at this point I am watching it for Simon ONLY. [In reply to] Can't Post

Melinda is the only one with real amazing talent, IMO.

Blake - Complacent. My kids love him.

Melinda- Star Power.

"Nos-phil-ratu was awful." -Fing. I'll back you on this!

Chris R - Do we need the R now since Sligh got the boot? I'm not a fan of his, but I think he did well last night.

Haley - Wedding singer. My hubby's reaction: "Damn, we gotta keep her on the show!" *thunk*

Gina - Fine. Just...Fine.

Jordin - Beautiful face, solid performance.

Sanjaya - Insipid. So, he can hit a few high notes. Listen to him with your eyes closed- once the hype is out of the picture he's a kid with a pretty good voice. That's it.

Lakisha - She reminds me of my Aunt Flo, who is 63 years old, but yea, Church had some strong moments last night. I like her.

DialIdol totally disagrees with me:
Bottom 3: Phil, Sanjaya, Hayley
Should go: PHIL the Pill
Will go: Hayley

I don't know what they put in the Coke last night [In reply to] Can't Post

but I didn't hate anyone.

Blake - Nice. Nice range, nice tone, cute dancing. I was startled to realize he's the only boy left that I care at all about... though there weren't all that many to start.

> I am prepared to say that she is easily the best contestant that AI has EVER had. Easily.
Exactly what I said. She's astonishing. How could she ever have been in the background?

>Nos-phil-ratu was awful.
'Nuff said. I giggled when Simon said it was "dark". Well, what do you expect from the undead?

Chris R - he blew his nose or took allergy meds or something! I didn't hate him! I didn't *like* him, but the fingernails stayed away from the blackboard. Yay,

Haley was actually pretty good - in the beginning, in the slow and sultry bit. When she cuts loose she's like a Mickey Mouse Club refugee. And I don't mean Britney. Paula and Randy made fools of themselves and were cruel not to bother giving any input; they seemed to be making a joke out of it, but it was inappropriate. You put her there - now acknowledge the fact that she is there.

Gina - nice, but I'm very worried about her. She looked like she was about to tear into a killer torch song, and ... "Smile". Not a good idea, I think.

Jordin - as you say, FoP, Melinda's only real competition. Love her. Hated the song, loved her - there's a lot of that this year.

Sanjaya - actually seemed to be trying! I take it back about the "didn't hate anyone" though - as soon as he opened his big grinning mouth to yell whatever it was at Simon (I heard it was "Welcome to the universe of Sanjaya", which ... you missed the point, fool) the get-OFF-my-tv surged back in full force.

Lakisha - I don't know. She was very very good, better than in weeks, but she lost me a while ago. I don't know why. Melinda, I guess!

But why, why, *why* do I have to put up with Jennifer Lopez on my tv next week?? Was Gwen Stefani not punishment enough? I have managed to keep this female off my tv until now, except when the news was insipid enough to talk about her - and now I can't. Argh.

I *like* Gwen!

J Lo next week? I worked last night and my DVR cut it off before it ended. I am scared- will they all have to sing J Lo songs?

I didn't get what Sanjaya yelled, either. Clearly he doesn't get that he is not in on the joke, but is the joke. Poor kid.
No, really, I'm having a moment.

I thought I liked Gwen [In reply to] Can't Post

Till last week. She just seemed fairly useless to the poor kids, didn't seem to like any of them much, and just seemed surprised by their song choices - especially when they chose her own songs, when she got territorial. And I loathed that ridiculous excuse for a performance she and the person who yelled woo (Horton? No he heard a who) gave.

What constitutes a JLo song? I don't think I could name one. Wait - there was something about Jenny from the block. Still, couldn't hum a bar of anything of hers.

I *like* it like that.

Glad I finally caught another episode [In reply to] Can't Post

Blake: I enjoyed his performance quite a bit. Actually a lot. Definitely will be the last guy. (Or should be.)

Melinda: Wonderful as usual. Hard to say anything new about her. She's so consistently spectacular.

Phil: Painful, quite simply painful. I had to turn my eyes away from the screen. (And plug my ears.) Yikes.

Chris R.: FOP your comment on Chris still has me laughing: "Chris R is so dirty and weird looking". VERY nicely said. Ha ha. He was better than usual; still don't like him.

Haley: Rather bland if you ask me, but not horrible.

Gina: Again, a snoozer, but I still like her voice for some strange reason.

Jordin: Didn't really impress me. Maybe it was her song choice.

Sanjaya: Please just go away.

Lakisha: I haven't seen all of the episodes, but I didn't think this was her best.

Should go? PHIL!
Will go? Probably Haley. Possible Gina (but I hope not)

I guess y'all saved the 'Simon' role for me. [In reply to] Can't Post

Blake --- Hate. HAAAATE. Even if I ignore the fact that this song was sung much, much better
on Season 2, Beatbox still comes off as a Vegas lounge act...with seizures! That little parody
would've earned any other contestant some tough love from the 3 Stooges, but they have to pimp
the chosen ones to America. Worst of the night for me. Worse than Sanjaya. GO HOME!

Phil -- Unless he's belting it, he tends to have this weird alien voice-changer thing going on. I hate that
tone. Technically better than Blake, but both have an annoying tone/singing accent at times. GO HOME, Mr. Creepy!

Melinda -- Best of the night. Duh.

Chris R -- Better than Blake. Not as nasally this time. Preferred him to Phil. Best guy of the night, but
that's not saying much.

Jordin -- That's a song I've always hated, but the performance was okay. I like her, but I think she sounds better if you're watching her rather than just listening to her. They have studio programs to fix that, though.

Gina -- That was pretty.

Sanjaya -- Has more range and some control, but never delivers. I find his "entertainment" factor to be more William Hung than people on other boards want to admit. Yep, Aerlinn, he lost me with the "Welcome to the Universe of Sanjaya!" bratty moment #2. WtH was that?! GET OFF MY TV NOWWW!

Haley -- I liked this song better when Miss America won with it about 15 years ago. Simon loves me. ;)
SEND THE PUSSYCAT DOLL HOME!

Lakisha -- Powered her way through it. Lacked the nuance Melinda would've given it, and was a little pitchy, but still a very nice performance. Something about her leaves me kinda cold though...

I'm really not in a bad mood, honest! =)

I listened with my eyes closed to a couple of them. [In reply to] Can't Post

It does make a difference (as Simon says, think about radio!).

In particular, Jordin was terrible when I didn't watch her. She has no tone whatsoever -- just harsh and painful to listen to. And her diction and phrasing are terrible. If she came on the radio, I would immediately change stations. I have no idea what she did to make people enjoy her performance, but whatever it was, it apparently worked.

Likewise Sanjaya -- absolutely dreadful. He was off pitch on MANY notes and off the rhythm in several places, and his phrasing showed no understanding of the song. Not having seen him, I have no idea why people thought this was his best performance. What was Simon up to? I think he decided to say something ("incredible") that could be interpreted as either good or bad, possibly to confuse people who are deliberately voting for the "worst." I think Sanjaya thought Simon was praising him! Poor kid. He will not have a career in music, just a William-Hung-esque notoriety.

I'll join the chorus of praise for Melinda again -- she is far and away the best singer who has *ever* been on the show. I will buy her album. I just can't wait to see the final showdown between Melinda and Sanjaya!

The rest:

Blake: Hated him; as Tony Bennett pointed out, he did not have a clue what he was singing about. Like Chris, he just tried to do his best Sinatra interpretation (though without Sinatra's artistry). Oh yeah -- hated Chris, too.

Phil: Oh dear. Horrible vocal. I actually like his voice, but not how he used it last night, and he completely, totally missed the mark on that song.

Gina: nice vocal, but bland. She showed a nice tone quality and tried to express the words. I've been liking her more and more.

Haley: I agree with FoP -- I listened to most (though not all) of her performance with my eyes closed, and I liked her vocal better than anyone's but Melinda's. I also liked that she actually took Tony Bennett's advice -- she should have gotten a point or two for that! I, too, am not sure why the judges didn't like her. I think Simon's lost his objectivity on her; he should try closing his eyes.

Lakisha: She's got an OK voice (better than any of the others except Melinda), but I really dislike her interpretations. She doesn't listen to the words or sing from the heart, but tries to stylize her delivery too much. To me, her performances seem totally insincere. She also sometimes forces and makes unpleasant sounds.

I hesitate to even forecast what will happen tonight. Again, Sanjaya should go but won't. (If the "vote the worst" people don't get bored soon, he may very well make it into the finals). I think Blake deserves to go next, but I think it will come down to Phil (which won't bother me) or Haley (which will). OK, I guess I'll go out on a limb and predict that Phil will leave.

He said something like "Let me try something different" - I figured he meant that people might be voting for Send-jaya-home (I love TWOP) to spite him, so if he pretended to like him they might stop.

>he should try closing his eyes.
Simon will never, ever close his eyes when Haley's on stage. I don't think he *can*.

You surprise me about Jordin; I wish I'd taped it to listen to her again. I'm pretty ignorant, but I liked her phrasing.

I'm very worried about Gina... I'm hoping for Phil to go, as I try not to hope for what I can't have. (Sent-jaya!)

That's how I interpreted Simon's comment, [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm still laughing. His legs comment was so timely, albeit not entirely appropriate I suppose. It made me chuckle though.

I didn't hear anything except "Incredible" in Simon's critique of Sanjaya. I took it as "holy crap what are you doing on that stage". And found it very amusing.

I tend to agree with Simon most times.

NZ is, I think, two weeks behind the US with American Idol (coming up is the Gwen Stefani episode) and your comments are giving me great insight into the singers!

I haven't watched a full episode yet so I have managed to miss the Event that is Sanjaya.

Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

Doesn't matter. He still doesn't get it. Simon just doesn't want to antagonize all the text-voting tweenies to vote even harder to keep him around. Dhani is really buying into his own hype.

I figured out what's been bugging me about Blake's voice, but I had to IMDb to make sure. He reminds me of
Kirk Morris, the Jere Burns character from Dear John. It's something about the way his mouth forms the notes as well as the sound produced. I keep saying "Kirrr-kuh" when he's on....

Not too surprising. The bottom three were who I thought they should be.

That Idol quiz tonight reminded me of this fact: there has been some loser in the top 12 nearly every single year. Remember Chicken Little??? He was much worse than Sanjaya! How about that red-haired geek who did nothing but Sinatra?

So when you saw the three groups, was there any doubt that the group with Lakisha-Melinda-Jordin was the safe group??? Like they were surprised - right!!!

Leave it to the 30(?) million voters. Is that correct? Whatever. Not far off from what I predicted. But it was what I hoped wouldn't happen. Phil is a disgrace as far as I am concerned. Gina didn't deserve to go before Haley and Phil by any means. Loved how the three guys (minus Phil) were in a group. Uggh. Just throw them all out. Amazing. I do like Blake a bit, but I do recognize is vocal range problems. But at least he doesn't make me cringe.

So.....are we all to discuss this whole debacle and pretend Sanjaya isn't there? I suppose so. ;) Good stuff. Can't remember who mentioned the final showdown between Melinda and Sanjaya, but OW!!! Scary.

who forecast a face off between Melinda & Sanjaya. But if he only made the middle three this week, he and Howard Stern have got some catching up to do!

I agree that Gina shouldn't have gone yet. I expected her to be in the bottom 3, but not the bottom 2. How ironic her choice of song turned out to be! Of course, I didn't think she actually belonged in the bottom 3; I would have put Blake there instead. But I realize I'm in the minority, since I don't think his coolness factor even begins to make up for his lack of vocal talent. Actually, I would have ranked Gina no. 3, right after LaKisha (now that I have listened to Jordin with my eyes closed, I just don't like her any more).
