Glad to hear how smoothly your recovery is going. Will you have physical therapy? What good timing that you're coming into spring.

Wishing you all well with your recoveries, apartment hunts, garden work, etc - and happy birthday, Ataahua! I've had a few days away with two old schoolfriends, in a stone cottage with a log fire, on the edge of the Cotswold area of England. The native stone is a very attractive honey-gold, very picturesque with the autumn leaf colours growing stronger by the day. We've known each other since 1964 and spent most of the time chatting about everything and nothing. We're in touch by email etc, but only get together once a year; there's nothing like sitting in front of the fire with a glass of something, or in a quaint cafe with cake, having a good chat and a laugh. Simple pleasures! The sun's out this morning but the nights are growing cooler here now; I'm trying to resist putting the heating on until it's really too chilly for comfort. It's going to be an expensive winter! Let's hope it's a mild one, though my grandsons will be disappointed as they pine for snow - a rarity in our area anyway, and even less likely these days. Have a good autumn (or spring!) weekend folks - Cheers!

*raises coffee mug* And here's to many more! What a pleasant place that is. I was about to write "and relaxing", but it looks like part of that trail goes up a steep hill! *checks website* Ridge Walk - 3-5 hours for a 6 km walk, and medium to high fitness level required for the 1220 steps...Great elephants, that's a workout! Did you bring home any of their honey?

And what a delightful get-together you all had. May there be many more! And hoping your winter is mild with few storms. Do the mountains near you typically get some snow cover?

we would have to drive an hour and a half or so into Snowdonia to reach it; much the same if it fell to the east. Being so close to the sea and in a mainly Atlantic airflow, the cold weather doesn't hang around much here unless there's an area of high pressure pulling air down from the Arctic or in from the colder east. 'The Beast from the East' in 2018 was the most recent serious cold snap.

That one's far beyond my abilities. I stayed at lake-level and that was taxing enough. I'm guessing they sell their honey at various outlets; there were no staffed areas on-sight.

I had the option of a cast for c. 2 weeks, but the specialist said while it would be a bit more painful without one, it would give a lot more mobility, and is what he'd choose for himself, so it's what I went with. It means I can type with both hands! Yes, that table was sooo comfortable with its soothing warmth.

a/k/a "most sociable man in the world" according to his daughter, has discovered that he knows half the people at the assisted living place already - on the first day connected with someone he'd worked with for 30 years - and has become seriously hooked on Bingo. He'll be fine. The wife is having a harder time letting go of stuff as they're living in half the square footage now, Daughter is making many trips to Goodwill as the younger generation sadly doesn't want any of Grandma's MANY china sets. That's a generational thing, isn't it? My mother-in-law had at least six full sets. I have a set of 10 plates only that came from my maternal g-grandmother, which is enough. Pseudophew just calls me by my name, but the loving tone makes it special. I don't know what it is, but from the moment he was born we were bonded. He used to sit on my lap and just wrap himself around me, and even when he was a teen he would sit next to me and then sort of slide over onto me. And he was never embarrassed to hold hands walking down the street. When they got married they wanted to limit the guest list and didn't invite all the uncles & aunts (my bestie has 7 siblings) but _I_ was on the list! I felt very special. Still do. And his wife is a darling.

that I ended up doing no gardening at all, beyond wandering around the garden beds :) I found myself wearier than I'd expected, and took that as a message to take things slowly. Yes, there's an excellent hand therapy clinic attached to a physio practice not too far away from where I live. I've been going there since the initial injury, and will continue for a while yet.

that beautiful stone they build with glows in the sun, doesn't it? It was possibly my favorite part of my month-long trip to England many years ago. We found ourselves in Burton-on-the-Water (rather sourly recommended by a man who gave us a lift and described it as attracting "the British ice-cream-eating public," but we decided not to be snobbish), and I wish I could lay hands on the photo I took of the signpost there that had pointers to Stow-on-the-Wold, Moreton-on-Marsh, and Something-on-the-Hill. A relic from when one's world was much smaller!

That's a mouthful. Eeeps! it's been 21 years has it? Time does fly by. Who would have thought we'd have just finished watching a season of a TV show about the 2nd age of Middle-earth! That park looks like such a wonderful place to visit. What took you so long, lol? I adore NZ's 'fern trees' and would relish the chance to walk under them again. Hopefully sooner than later. Lucky you! I hope the rest of your birthday weekend is fab!!

That's great news, that he's settled in incredibly well! I can feel for his wife. Back in our moms' and grandmoms' day, having at least one set of company or holiday china was so important, a cultural status thing, a sign of their "refinement". Six full sets, though - wow! (We saved only one of my mother's two china sets, a lovely white Haviland, and that's now with our eldest.) But for that generation, it's so hard to see those things go "out of the family", it was expected that those would be gladly cherished for generations on. How times change. That pseudophew (and is wife) are "keepers", what a sweet relationship you all have!

That's just south of Bourton on the Water. There are so many interesting villages in that area, very picturesque and therefore flooded with tourists in high season, but utterly charming nevertheless. Even on a wet grey day the stone looks warm and welcoming.

And an historic hobbity spread of goodies! AWESOME!!! :D I see there's still some biscuits and butter that are beckoning to me! I went on my Fall trek to Lake Michigan last Friday... Pentwater instead of Charlevoix this time. It figures the week I was in Balti was the last of the "good" weather for standing on the shore; but OH MY the Lake was awake and making itself known along with a very busy seagull-filled stormy sky! They form a cloud of birdies all around you when you have a loaf of bread to toss in the air. There was one that really caught my eye.
The cold wind was blowing at 15-20mph that the gulls love to ride and hover in place. It was perfect! I like to go when it's coldish and I'm the only one on the beach... along with the gulls :) PLUS the trees are at their peak colour and I had a thermos of hot cider! So it was a pretty sweet day :D This week I plan to STAY HOME... and wait to see if anything can move me 32 minutes out of my chair. Thanks for taking such great care of us, Altaira... and have a great week everyone!

What a flock greeting you there, you did have a good day! Did you pick up many more beach-pebbles? I finally did it...I was making a purchase on Amazon two evenings ago, and it said "free trial month?" so I clicked "yes"...and the next thing I knew, I was watching young Galadriel and totally forgetting my bed-time...

A friend has claimed that she thinks she has seen or heard the first snow geese and trumpeter swans returning to the valley - they like to winter over here in the fallow fields, gleaning what they can - but I've only seen/heard the Canada geese heading south from here, in long skeins of v-shapes. The cedars outside my windows are lively with chickadees and sparrows and the occasional Steller's Jay, which entertain Charlie Moonshadow the cat for hours at a time. Next month we will start to see the bald eagles here for the winter from Alaska. We're still awaiting the promised rains that should end the fire season for good, but it's down in the 40s at night now, which is helping the crews a lot.

It's funny how clicking YES can make things happen! *high five* :D How surreal is it to see new stories???? I was just doing some catching-up last night watching the last 3 episodes. As always with new shows, it takes a little while to get established and for characters to get fleshed out; but they're getting there. I hope you're enjoying being back in Middle-earth (NZ). Just as before, the lands are definitely one of the characters!

*warms hands on your post* I love this time of year... and you've definitely got a wonderful front-row seat :D The Canadian geese left Michigan a few weeks early this year, so I'm wondering if they're moving ahead of a hard winter? *bites nails* Every October I watch the flick "Fly Away Home" with Jeff Daniels (a Michigander ;). It's based on the true story of a young Canadian girl who finds a nest of abandoned goose eggs and raises the hatched nestlings. Her Dad (Daniels) and she have to train the new flock how and where to fly south for the winter or risk being captured/destroyed. Trivia: Daniels is a bit of a hero here in Michigan. He lives with his family about 1.5 hrs south of me, has a small-town live theatre, and plays his guitar & sings in free concerts all over the state. Sometimes showing up spontaneously just to hang out and play. He went to the university I used to work at and is where he developed his acting-chops. "PLUS he's a Lord of the Rings" fan! In "The Martian", they were having a secret meeting called "Project Elrond" and he wanted his code-name to be Glorfindel!
