Come on in! It's Fiesta Friday! Can't Post

Well, well, well. It's Friday again already, which means it's also time for Fiesta!

A few Fiestas ago we mentioned that the NASA DART mission had missed its planned target area on the Dimorphos asteroid by only 17 meters, and this week NASA announced that the mission was a success, altering the course of the asteroid around its parent Didymous by 32 minutes, after they defined a successful mission as a 78 second alteration. They continue to impress!

Speaking of impressive, the Elves, Hobbits and Dwarves collaborated on today's Fiesta buffet and I must say it's looking even yummier than usual, complete with lembas scones, mushroom and meat pies, and 'ripe meat off the bone' Laugh. Not wanting to be outdone by the food, they left the Fiesta bar well-stocked with all manner of wine, bubbly and beer. And, yes, it comes in pints!

So, dive in, order up, and let us know what you've been up to and/or what you have planned for this weekend!

*kicks juke box* I Don't Want to Miss a Thing by Aerosmith (from the Armageddon soundtrack) starts to play.

Have a fabulous weekend, everyone!! LaughHeartCool

It comes in pints? [In reply to] Can't Post

Then how about a pint of frothy-headed root beer to celebrate a fine autumn day, please, Altaira! And I'll nab one of these pies to accompany it. Yesterday's wind and rain took down quite a few leaves here, but there's still enough on the trees to delight the eye.

I'm hoping we get our mulch delivered soon, I've got a wide area to spread it out on and 13 bushes plus 9 phlox of various colours to get planted. My neighbor had taken me in her husband's pickup truck to a nursery that had a 70% off sale - and she's one of those who can visualize what plants will look like when full-grown, so we had a lot of fun finding bushes for the once-overgrown area between our lawns. Now to get them all planted before the end of the month.

What are your autumn plans, Altaira? And have you started getting ready for Halloween yet?

The good thing is it sounds like it's going to look really nice once all the work is done.

Speaking of work, my autumn plans include *gasp* working. We're getting a later start than usual on my client's work, so I have lots to get done in the next few weeks.

Enjoy the tail end of the colors there! Smile

Doing some [In reply to] Can't Post

Fall stuff this weekend. Last weekend we went to a pumpkin patch but I’m not sure where we’re going this weekend. The weather is supposed to be perfect here.

Hi all! It’s been a while since I’ve been here.

Hmm, I should look up some "fall stuff" to do locally - it's all farms around here, there must be something going on. A friend is visiting next week and the weather outlook is good so we should take advantage!

mmm, scones! [In reply to] Can't Post

no "mean pies" for me thanks! Wink *Takes a scone and a miruvoir mimosa*

Now that I'm all unpacked, I've been checking off a different to-do list, mostly getting settled in my new town & taking care of, well, everything I can think of. Today I had my annual check up with my new caregiver, whom I like very much - seems very engaged & diligent - and got my flu shot and a clean bill of health (something that becomes more and more precious as one ages!) Nice to know my blood sugar, cholesterol, etc. are all in the healthy range. He even checked my trick knee and pronounced it stable enough that I can probably delay the replacement surgery a couple of years. (Although I know from my shoulder that these arthritic joints can go south very quickly when they decide to, but here's hoping he's right!) I then sent off a baby present to my "pseudo-phew" - the youngest son of my bestie, who has from his birth been a special buddy of mine, and who recently welcomed a little girl into the family. He's a big guy, 6'4", and the pictures of him cradling this tiny being in his hands just slay me. This afternoon I get my eyes checked, and that is the last thing on the list!

Maybe next week I'll even get some writing done . . .

Excellent work (yes, at our age it does take some work). It's a great sign that you've been taking good care of yourself. Smile

I don't know though, I think you're missing out by passing on the mean pies, lol. The first thing Gimli did when he laid eyes on them was declare: "now those are some mean-looking pies!" I clearly need to slow down when composing the Fiesta posts!

Enjoy your weekend, and maybe indulge in a real-life treat to celebrate a healthy you!

Go DART! [In reply to] Can't Post

Amazing seeing something that would've sounded far-fetched 20 years ago become a reality today.

Wow, what a buffet today! I'll join dernwyn in a pint of root beer (or two). And I'll grab a meat pie and have faith in the cooks that it's vegan-friendly, lol. A bit of an annoying work week for me, but next week is shaping up to be better so I'm trying to glide into the weekend on good vibes.

The apartment tour has been so-so so far: we applied to a place last weekend that we really liked, but they ended up picking someone else instead. Which is a bummer since the application process is stressful in and of itself! Back to square one, and since it's mid-month there aren't as many leads right now. So it's likely we'll sit in a holding pattern until a new cycle of places become available at the top of next month, unless something amazing appears in the interim.

No real plans this weekend, though I'm going to try to think up something fun that distracts us from the repetition of apartment hunting. We did do a little date night subscription box last night: it's an e-commerce brand that sends you a monthly box - usually it includes some snacks, a playlist and an activity or two (this week's was a 'cruise ship escape' adventure game we had to work together on).

Have a great weekend, all!

In a celebratory mood! [In reply to] Can't Post

My wrist surgery went well - sincere thanks for all the kind thoughts and well-wishes. Because it was relatively short (only about an hour) I allowed myself to be persuaded to have it done under local anaesthesia, which was an interesting experience. It was fine, actually - the anaesthetist said he'd use an intravenous sedative as well as the nerve block so I'd stay mellow (not quite his words), and whatever he used was good stuff - with that and the *heated* operating table I was so mellow I fell asleep partway through. Very little post-op pain, so I've made limited use of the truckload of painkillers they sent me home with.

It's a lovely spring day, and a pair of ducks have taken up residence on our pond, so we can hope to see ducklings before too long. I'm taking it easy this weekend, but may do a little gentle pottering about in the garden, wrist permitting.

Wishing everyone a pleasant weekend.

Fully unpacked, and now all the doctors etc. are in order. That's good news about the knee, but even when you do have to get it replaced, you're in a good place now for that to happen.

How's it going with your neighbor who's had to move?

Oh yes, I'm imagining those huge hands holding tiny ones - and I bet she's already got him wrapped around her finger! Congrats, "auntie"! (Does he have a special name for you?)

Excellent! [In reply to] Can't Post

Oh yeah, that IV sedative is wonderful stuff, when one is undergoing minor eye surgery. I was so relaxed, the doctor had to ask me to stop talking as it was making my face move...

A heated operating table? Wow...

Now here's to a speedy (within reason) recovery! Will you have the wrist in cast for very long?

It's my birthaversary! And I bring mathoms! [In reply to] Can't Post

It's been (counts back) ... wow, 21 years since I started posting on the discussion boards. Where did the time go? It's also my birthday so in the time-honoured tradition of Hobbiton I come bearings gifts.

Today I drove down to Eltham to visit the Rotokare Scenic Reserve for the first time. The lake is surrounded by a predator-proof fence (no mouse, rat, weasel, stoat, cat or dog can get in unless they bring tools - or sneak in via someone's car). The trust has brought in various native birds that need pest-free areas to breed, such as kiwi, tieke (saddlebacks) and pōpokotea/whitehead - and of course heaps of other species also benefit.

It's an amazing place, full of birdsong. And I took heaps of photos and videos, the best of which I'll share here with you. Smile

It was a gorgeous day at Lake Rotokare, which is surrounded by a wetland

Light through the trees

Boardwalk through the forest

Where I stopped for a much-needed rest

I had hoped to link to a video with inquisitive robins and birdsong in the background but imgur is taking ages to load it. If it goes through, I'll add it here.

Meanwhile, I'll scrummage for the makings for a salted margarita - happy weekend, everyone! Smile

Yeah it's a cool idea! [In reply to] Can't Post

I think they're all still figuring it out - I'm guessing some of these brands took off during Covid. The one we tried is called The Happily Co. You fill out a relationship preferences questionnaire so they have an idea if you like games, or food, or other things. Our second box just arrived—I wanted to give it a couple of months to see what kind of stuff we'd get. Not sure if it'll end up being worth the $20 a month, but still fun to try new things. Smile

Thanks, you too!

*crosses fingers* [In reply to] Can't Post

Hoping so! We have another tour early tomorrow but I'm wary of some language in the rental application: it's called an application to lease and has what's called a holding deposit too. Basically you'll give them a few hundred dollars upon applying, on top of the application fee, and if approved it goes toward your security deposit. But there's no backing out if you're approved, or you lose all that money. Which could all be fine if we love the place, but it's absurd to expect that kind of commitment (saying we *will* lease the place if approved) if I haven't even seen the lease! So tomorrow will be enlightening - I hope they can propose a logical way forward if we're genuinely interested.

*sigh* lots of weird stuff out there now. Angelic

And yeah, I mentioned it in the reply above but it's called The Happily Co. if you're curious! It's fun knowing each month's box will be a different set of activities and goodies. Smile The last part of the cruise game sort of stumped us, so I'm hoping our brains just weren't working (rather than the game itself not making sense in its third act). Still a cool concept though.
