March: what are you watching? Can't Post

Hello! Felt like it'd been awhile since I had posted this thread, so here goes!

We recently watched Pixar's new movie, Turning Red. It's a sweet and fun movie that I'm sure will hit a soft spot with pre-teens and parents of pre-teens. And lovely animation as well.

Moonrise Kingdom: This was a rewatch, but what a joy it was to see years later. There's such a beautiful little engine to Wes Anderson's stories - they start slow and feel a bit academic, yet the characterization and visual splendor take it to another level.

Network: Another rewatch, but I didn't really remember much going in other than Peter Finch's famous line. It's a sharp and powerful indictment of modern television, which holds true today more than one wishes it did. Robert Duvall really stood out to me with a tour de force performance as a network executive.

So, what have you been watching lately?

Mostly bad TV. [In reply to] Can't Post

Usually Married at First Sight Australia - the couples have just gone feral (as always happens later in the series) and I watch it as mindless bumblegum telly at the end of a work day.

Good TV includes the fourth (and last) season of Wellington Paranormal - the opening episode was brilliant but the next two were somewhat meh, unfortunately. I hope that tonight's ep is a return to form because this show is usually excellent. Is anyone else following it?

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

LOL [In reply to] Can't Post

We all have our indulgences, don't we? Angelic My mom's likely watching the season finale of The Bachelor as we speak - a show which I have absolutely zero interest in haha.

I hadn't heard much about Wellington Paranormal, but I see the What We Do in the Shadows fellas are involved - and it looks like the series finale is airing tomorrow (your today, the 16th), no? Perhaps Wikipedia is wrong, though.

We should have three more eps, including tonight's. [In reply to] Can't Post

Wellington Paranormal is a spin-off of the What We Do in the Shadows movie, based around the two cops who turned up at the house and were hypnotised to not see anything unusual happening (such as the burned vampire in the basement). The show has beautifully dry humour, with the cops facing anything from creatures from Maori legend to sentient fatbergs. (Here's a clip of Satan at the mall.)

The Prime Minister's fiance was in one episode, and a couple of characters from the WWDITS movie have made an appearance too. I'll miss the show when it's done. Unsure

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

It has been a bit patchy [In reply to] Can't Post

I did enjoy O-Leary playing 'Who the Hell' with the devil tonight.
And the episode with the dancing MC Hammer pants had me hysterically laughing.I wouldn't mind Sgt Maaka having a spin off series.

And speaking of patchy [In reply to] Can't Post

I have been enjoying 'Our Flag Means Death', although with different directors and writers it can be variable.
It is quite crazy to consider the fact that the Rhys Darby character is actually based on a real man of means who thought he would like to become a pirate, and did so.
And I did enjoy Blackbeard misunderstanding the term passive aggression, thinking it was 'massive aggression'.
I also watched 'I don't feel at home in this world anymore', with Melanie Lynskey and Elijah Wood. I was reading an interview with Melanie Lynskey and there were a lot of people recommending the film. I really enjoyed it and would recommend it. It does get quite violent in places, but I was able to manage it.

hmm, can I remember . . . [In reply to] Can't Post

Movie-wise I watched "Free Guy" and "The Adam Project" and loved them both.

The first episode of "Picard" season 2. Promising. Always loved John deLancey's "Q." I've fallen behind on "The Book of Boba Fett" which never grabbed me, but I will finish it as I only have a couple of episodes left. I'm eagerly awaiting "Strange New Worlds."

Tried "Pieces of Her" and "The Santa Clarita Diet," despite good acting, just didn't grab me. Watched the first two episodes of "The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" and will continue that one. "The After Party" tried for a comedic vibe on "Rashomon" but fell short.

The series that has me hooked now is an Italian one, "An Astrological Guide to Broken Hearts." I get to practice my [very limited] Italian and the premise and characters and setting are equally pleasing.

Still waiting for the final episodes of "Grace & Frankie."

A few new things a few older things [In reply to] Can't Post

For me anyway. The main thing which I am trying to watch at the moment is Battlestar Galactica the remake which was made a few years ago but has only recently come onto freeview. It is quite a series with more twists and turns than I can imagine quite disturbing at times and although it is sci-fi it is as far removed from something like Star Wars as can be imaginable. It has sex in it for starters and relationships. Quite complicated in one or two cases!
Other than that I am watching various sport, live ones and older ones on youtube. I have been watching something called big match revisited which is football from the mid70s to early 80s. I only really watch it for the nostalgia as I wouldn't really say it was a classic time for either football or english football, but it was the first time they had colour!
I have also been watching the new worzel Gummidge from the BBC which I have found surprisingly good but that is possibly because the episode i watched was about birdwatching a hobby which I partake in sometimes. Other than that, the usual Horrible Histories, Dectorists even the occasional thing on contemporary tv and eighty days around the world.
So I suppose quite a lot for someone who claims that he doesn't watch much TV. Probably explains why I am only halfway through series 2 of Battlestar Galactica and have two and a half more series to watch and I have been watching this for over a year!

Battlestar Galactica the remake was amazing, although not kid-friendly at all. [In reply to] Can't Post

I've started watching a kid's program called Molly of Denali (on PBS in the U.S.). It's actually quite good. It's about a Native Alaskan girl and her family, friends and neighbors. Some episodes are silly, but others are rather interesting (I dare you not to be moved by the segment dealing with Grandpa's sad past). It deals with life in Alaska and the skills you need there (it's not exactly like you're close to much help up there, so they have to be very independent) in some episodes, some of the fun local events and traditions, and traditions of the native tribes in particular. I spent a few days in the Denali area, and it definitely brings back the vibe of the area for me.

Unfortunately, the show suffered a tragedy. The actor who voiced Molly's adored big cousin Randall tragically died young. The character was a semi-regular, but Molly did visit him in Sitka often enough that he can't just disappear. Time will tell if they actually kill the character off (that might be too much to bear) or recast him.

Plenty of trying, it seems! [In reply to] Can't Post

I guess that's the nice thing about TV: if something doesn't work for you, drop it and find something else. The new show that's getting a lot of buzz is Pachinko on Apple, which had an absolutely chaotic behind the scenes making-of process. Curious to read about the reception of that one when it premieres, though.

Will they release the rest of Gracie & Frankie all at once next month, I assume?

I've heard folks say they really like Our Flag Means Death [In reply to] Can't Post

Though I've never looked into it myself until now. The premise sounds fun, especially at HBO where they wouldn't have constraints on what kind of show it "should" be.

Last Kingdom Season 5 finally - yeah! [In reply to] Can't Post

Major plot points align with the books more or less, but character arcs are unpredictable. Still a great season with several loveable characters whom I shall miss, this being the end.

I’m also 4 episodes into The Legend of Vox Machina which is based on a D&D campaign that was played out on a (scripted?) game of D&D on YouTube over several instalments. Interesting concept, but it’s a little gratuitous, perhaps for cheap laughs, or maybe it lines up with the original YouTube show’s aesthetic (which I watched for 5 minutes of a while back, so can’t say for sure). I’m not being prudish, it’s just that certain words (one oft-used expletive in particular) seem incongruent with the genre, breaking the illusion as it were. Perhaps modern D&D players do it to be ironic, a sort of breaking the fourth wall indirectly? As someone old enough to have played D&D when it was new, using f-bombs strategically, and infrequently, at best might be considered clever. But it gets old fast, and is rather sloppy for an otherwise excellent series. So yeah it’s pretty good but definitely for mature audiences (for more than just language).

I forgot "Severance" [In reply to] Can't Post

Very strange. I'm totally hooked.

Also "Home for Christmas," a Norwegian series that is very funny, often quite raunchy, and also manages to be heart-warming.
