having to follow on from *Cate Blanchett*?

I don't envy her one little bit.

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

The fandom today has been hell [In reply to] Can't Post

Most of them are just making pathetic assumptions about how this show will definitely fail and the creators have nothing but disrespect for Tolkien’s lore etc and it’s just sickening and childish even when they carry on like that.

Look at the comments on the main Amazon channel, they’re typing out that stupid quote from Tolkien over and over. 95% of the comments are just that same dumb quote.

Yeah [In reply to] Can't Post

It is kinda sad. The fact they don't recognize that Second Age Middle-earth should look very different from Third Age Middle-earth is boggling to me. The whole, #notmytolkien seems kneejerk rather than a well-reasoned argument supported by evidence.

That said. The way Amazon turned Wheel of Time into a non-sensical farce does have me concerned for the LotR show too. It isn't just the changes to the books, but also the inconsistencies in logic and character motivations. WoT was a disaster IME.

Anyway, back to Rings of Power. The visuals from this trailer are great. I just hope the writing is even better. In the end, that's what is really going to matter to me.

It seems this is actually not a direct quote by Tolkien but a paraphrase. [In reply to] Can't Post

The original line is said by Frodo to Sam in Cirith Ungol:

'No, they eat and drink, Sam. The Shadow that bred them can only mock, it cannot make: not real new things of its own.' [Book VI, Chapter 6)]

Leaving aside YouTube comment sections for now, I do not see how this is a dumb quote, however. It fundamentally reflects Aquinian metaphysics.

And while Tolkien meant is as that, holistically, it certainly also applies to modern commercial television and films; with its endless need for sequels, prequels, and reboots; its shameless, witless exploitation of nostalgia (e.g., the latest trailer for Jurassic something.); with its inability to come up with fresh and brave ideas; and with its peculiar need to mold everything into the same serialized product...all of that may come to pass for this series as well, I am afraid.

Sure, it is easy to infer from the post that what was described as "stupid" and "dumb" was not so much the paraphrased LoTR quote but the mass use of the quote on YouTube. Still, that is not what was written, and as we know from Tolkien, precise language matters. if that is pedantry, so be it...

My return to TORN after more than 7 years and thoughts on the teaser [In reply to] Can't Post

First of all... This is my first post since December 2014. Although I've been on here a couple of times I never felt like reactivating my account... But now the time just felt right to return since again we have our first images and footage of a new live action LOTR property.

GENERAL THOUGHTS ON THE REACTIONS SO FAR:
I am somewhat surprised that the general opinion on these first glimpses of RINGS OF POWER seems far more negative than positive. Although I do share a lot of criticism on the shown footage and some of the creative decisions I still think it's far too less stuff to be so negative in general. I am not talking about this forum of course but some online reactions by self-proclaimed "Tolkien experts" who are just enjoying themselves by criticizing every single frame of the teaser.

Yes... well a female Dwarf without a beard, Elves with short hair... Being a STAR WARS fan I couldn't believe some "problems" people had about this. It's strange. But ok. Same goes for the more diverse cast. Aren't we a little over that too? I don't get why people get offended by a black shorthaired Elf. As long as he acts like an Elf and feels like a character Tolkien could've written I am all for it. For example... I didn't liked Legolas in THE HOBBIT films. He looked like we remembered him and his inclusion made sense to a certain point but the overall execution of it felt wrong and did more harm than it helped the story.

WHAT I LIKED:
- New Zealand is still as beautiful as ever. Really enjoyed the glimpses of the real locations although I wished they'd shown more of that and less of semi-finished CGI environments.
- Even if it was only a brief moment the Orcs seem to be actors in costumes and not CGI creations. Great!
- I liked most of the costumes and sets and the opening shot of (I guess it's a Númenórean harbor) really looks great and in line of the LOTR movies.
- There are some intriguing images in it like the battle between the golden armored Elves and the black armored Orcs or that "meteor man" or whatever he's called at the moment
- I also liked the mixe between old and new. That we've gotten familiar looks like Durin IV, Galadriel or Gil Galad and different looking ones like Elrond -although I am not completely digging his look yet

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:
- Some of the CGI didn't feel finished yet. This reminded me of the last episode of THE WHEEL OF TIME (a show I did enjoy although it had it's problems) where some CGI effects just looked unfinished or cheap despite the show having a big budget. Really hope that Amazon gave TROP more time to polish the CGI for the release!
- Most action set pieces look like something I've already seen somewhere else. Nothing felt like: "Wow! That looks amazing! Haven't seen that before!"
- Too much action and less wonder or character. Where's my storytelling? Who are the players? What am I looking at? Middle-earth? Witcher? Narnia? Wheel of time? The teaser is very fast edited which is fine for a teaser released a few days before the actual show release but not for a first look at a new world. Especially since there's so much fantasy shows now that look very similar. LOTR should be THE fantasy property and there should be no question of whether this is a new GOT, WOT or Narnia.

WHAT I WONDER ABOUT:
What weird choice of a first trailer/teaser. It's very generic and action based and to anyone who hasn't read the Variety or TORN articles this teaser is very confusing. I just sent it to a couple of friends and family members who did enjoy the Peter Jackson movies and some have even read one or two of Tolkiens books. They didn't get anything. Sure they did recognize Dwarves and Elves and one even figured that the blond female Elf could be Galadriel or that the one girl looks like a Hobbit but otherwise for them it was more confusing than exciting.

The trailer tells nothing about the time it is set in (except for the title cards), nothing about the characters, the world. What's going on? If there wasn't the title cards they wouldn't even know it was a Middle-earth based show at all.

Wouldn't it be more clever to start with a story based trailer to reintroduce the world and general audience to Middle-earth and it's characters? To Tolkiens magic. Especially to distinguish itself from other recent fantasy shows like WHEEL OF TIME, HOUSE OF THE DRAGON or THE WITCHER. There's so much out there now and everything is getting new seasons or sequels, prequels or spin-offs.

All in all I am intrigued and am still looking forward to the show of course but the teaser itself was a disappointment and a huge missed opportunity for Middle-earth to return with a bang!

Not Bad [In reply to] Can't Post

I think it looks pretty good overall. At first glance I thought that city was in Lindon because it looks so much like the gray havens, but the mountain means it is probably in Numenor or Valinor (less likely). The elf looks pretty good, controversies notwithstanding, but I don't like that female dwarf. Though it's hard to gauge from a short trailer, it looks like it could be an interesting and entertaining series at the least.

A fairly safe trailer [In reply to] Can't Post

Does focus a lot on action scenes, not sure if this is going to be representative of the show or not? Definitely derivative of the Peter Jackson movies

Some of the ship CGI looks unfortunate, but I assume they will fix that up before final production

Are those moose antler hunters hunting Harfoots?

Can't really get a sense on wether the characters of Sophia N? and Ismael Cruz Cordova will be token blacks or if both Elves and Dwarves will be a mix of skin colors. There are a few background character for both that might be black but difficult to tell

The blond Elf in Gold armour is presumably one if Galadriels brothers. (Which one?) Is this the same actor that will play the Adar character?

Nothing in there that scares me away, though also not much that really makes me cheer.

That is Finrod, so that scene is likely a flashback of some kind to the First Age...which is interesting when considering the rights situation. But he was confirmed to be Finrod.

This aired during the Super Bowl. You have to know your audience when doing marketing, and that audience was mainly made up of football fans, casual football fans, and people who watch only for the halftime show. It would have been a disaster if they started with something like the naval-gazing conversation between Finrod and Andreth about the mortality of men. No, an action packed trailer was definitely the way to go in this particular instance.

The general vibe I'm getting so far [In reply to] Can't Post

Is that they're going for a remix of LotR in tone and themes, wrapped in a loose-fitting Second Age structure.

Which...isn't very Second Age at all.

(All caveats that we don't know that much yet and early marketing could be misleading apply)

were going to dislike anything put out by Amazon concerning this series. Nothing is perfect but there are more glass half empty than full on this project.

I liked what I saw....sure, the CGI could be tightened up in spots, would love to see some bigatures but we just have selected brief scenes from the prologue flashing before our eyes....just suggestive at this point. Context will be key.

But WHO is the audience? [In reply to] Can't Post

But then.... the question is: WHO is the right audience for a Middle-earth show with characters or stories nobody has ever heard of besides really hardcore Tolkien fans like us?

I agree that it was maybe the right teaser for a Super Bowl audience and it would've worked better as a second trailer after the prime audience (no pun intended) of the show already got their trailer with Tolkien magic, stuff to speculate on, story beats and a deep dive into Middle-earth lore.

And the other question would be: Why now? There was no need for this. The show aires in September. Does LOTR need the Super Bowl? Does Amazon need it? I mean for example the OBI-WAN KENOBI series on Disney+ comes out in only three months and just only released it's release date. No footage yet. No trailer for it or any other SW property during Super Bowl. They don't need it. Because their brands (Star Wars, Disney+) will work without Super Bowl. Same with the Marvel stuff. They gave us a second trailer to DOCTOR STRANGE 2 after the fans already got one before that. JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION released it's trailer a couple of days before the event. As for Amazon (one of the most powerful and wealthy companies in the world) and LOTR (one of the most beloved properties of the world)... they just could have skipped this event as the shows trailer has to compete with all the other stuff airing at the same time.

Skip the money for an expansive Super Bowl trailer and spend it on the show itself, give it some time and release an amazing trailer for your key audience a week later or two. Make the release itself an event of its own. A trailer that actually brings people on board. Not something that is supposed to please multiple audiences without satisfying anybody really.

In the end I would say it was the right trailer for Super Bowl but it wasn't the right first trailer for the show to be introduced to its own audience or the world to introduce Middle-earth's earlier ages.
