Tolkien and the Sanctification of Suffering Can't Post

Tolkien Studies, Volume 18, which includes my paper "Túrin the Hapless: Tolkien and the Sanctification of Suffering" has now been released. Hard copies can be purchased from the publisher at : https://wvupressonline.com/...nals/tolkien_studies

The issue is also now available at Project Muse, for those who either have an account, or are interested in purchasing a digital copy for $60.

You can also purchase just a copy of my paper for $20, but that's an awful lot to spend on one paper. If anyone is interested in reading the paper but does not have access to Project Muse (and doesn't want to purchase the full issue either digitally or as a hard copy), let me know and I will provide you with a copy.

Congratulations, Voronwë! [In reply to] Can't Post

How many Tolkien publications does this make for you now?

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

Thank you! [In reply to] Can't Post

Hmmm? This is my second piece published in Tolkien Studies. The first one was "Law and Arda" which was published in Volume 9 in 2012. I've also had two pieces published in MythLore. The most recent was "A Modern Fairy-story: Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell Seen Through the Prism of Tolkien’s Classic Essay" in October 2019, and the first was "Reconstructing Arda: Of Fëanor and the Unchaining of Melkor," in October 2008, which was an excerpt from my book, before it was published. And of course there is the book itself: Arda Reconstructed: The Creation of the Published Silmarillion. In addition, I reviewed Beren and Lúthien, The Fall of Gondolin and (most recently) The Nature of Middle-earth for the Journal of Tolkien Research at Doug Anderson's request. I also reviewed a number of Verlyn Flieger's books for MythPrint, but I'm not 100% which ones or when (though I was pleasantly surprised to see noWizardme quote one of them here recently!).

There are also the couple of pieces that I wrote for TORN about the various Tolkien-related lawsuits, but those probably wouldn't qualify as Tolkien publications. Smile

Me too! [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm currently wading through The Fall of Gondolin but will try to shift my brain back into Túrin mode afterwards. Smile

Enjoy! [In reply to] Can't Post

As you probably can guess from my long-time screen-name, Tuor's tale is particularly special to me, and I very much enjoy having all the different versions gathered together in one book.

Likewise [In reply to] Can't Post

This is my first time reading FoG, and I'm taking a great deal of pleasure in savoring the little variances and surprising stylistic differences from the Tolkien we know from his more famous works.

But I'm with you - I've always found Tuor's story touching in its almost workmanlike quality, both in terms of his character and in Tolkien's telling of it (or at least the versions I'd read up until now).
