**Party Game – get your thinking caps on for Smeagol’s riddles!

A very happy birthday on Wednesday to our dearest Hobbits, Bilbo and Frodo! As a tip of the hat to Bilbo’s adventures, here are some riddles to put your minds to (although most of them are much easier than what Smeagol and Bilbo had to battle with.) I’ll post the answers tomorrow. But for now, can you answer the question, “What am I?” (PS: please don’t put the answers in your subject line! No spoilers for other players. Cheers!) * * * * * 1. By day they are lost but never missing And if one falls, they hear you wishing 2. I need food but do not swallow I need air but do not breathe When nearly dead I can still grow Beware! For I can hotly seethe 3. Two sisters fight in eternal chase One dark and one bright, they cannot embrace One always ends with the other's birth Their grace extends across the earth 4. Only one colour, but not in one size. Stuck at the bottom, yet never cries. Present in sun, but not in rain. Doing no harm, and feeling no pain. 5. What is at the beginning of the end, the start of eternity, at the end of time and space, was in the middle of yesterday but is nowhere in tomorrow? And finally, a properly hard one – for which I apologise in advance: 6. A man gave one son 10 cents and another son 15 cents. What time is it? (Hint: use US vernacular for the answer)
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak. 1. Stars 2. Fire (currently have one going) 3. Day and night. 4. Shadow 5. The letter E 6. Hmm, it must have a "quarter" in it. I'm going to say 2:15 (A quarter pa's two?)

Fun riddles, I think I've got all but one! 1. Stars 2. A candle flame - actually, any kind of flame 3. Day and night 4.All I can think of is the bottom colour of a rainbow - indigo? 5. The letter "e", of course! 6. A quarter to two. That's an old "math" joke in our house! But yes - much easier than Bilbo had to deal with, no pressure there, right!

1. Stars. 2. Fire (or anything to do with flame, really). 3. Day and night. 4. A shadow. 5. The letter E. 6. The time is 1.45. The man gave away a total of 25 cents. He divided it between two people. Therefore, he gave a quarter to two.

I miss the days when people aimed for the Mediocrity Bench. (You didn't get there, by the way - your answers are too funny.)

6. A quarter to two. That's an old "math" joke in our house! As soon as I hear numbers, my brain hits the breaks. True story: the only book I've ever thrown across the room was a maths book. I didn't do well with my homework.

i got two and a half out of six. I gave myself a half for the sun and moon as opposed to night and day for number 3. That could be an excuse for Smeagol to still hold a claim for his ring later. And not been American I wouldn't have stood a chance for no.6 so in a life or death situation I declare that one invalid. And I don't care what Gollum thinks! Still a good quiz and I did do better than when I read the book for the first time. I didn't get any! But that might be something to do with the fact that a child of the 19809s does not find easy cheshnuts from the eighteenth century quite so easy!
