It's either 8 or 10. [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm not sure if the 2-part pilot is included in the 8 episode order.

Another Director Leaked? [In reply to] Can't Post

Fellowship of Fans is back with rumor of another director for Amazon's Lord of the Rings series, and this time they have a name: Wayne Che Yip (Wheel of Time; Hunters; Doctor Who. FOF has done a bit of detective work and it looks like they've come up with a solid lead. You can check it out on YouTube:

Wayne Che Yip Confirmed! [In reply to] Can't Post

Deadline reports: Wayne Che Yip Boards ‘The Lord Of The Rings’ TV Series As Director And Co-Executive Producer; Will Helm Four Episodes Of Amazon Original

Quote
Wayne Che Yip has joined the creative team behind the Lord of the Rings TV series, as both a co-executive producer and director, Amazon Studios announced today. As a director, he’ll follow in the footsteps of J.A. Bayona (A Monster Calls), who helmed the series’ first two episodes.

Yip is quoted about joining the creative team:

Quote
“It is a true honor to be invited into the world of Tolkien by J.D. & Patrick and Amazon Studios,” said Yip, whose directing credits include episodes of Hunters, Preacher, Utopia, Doctor Who, and upcoming Amazon fantasy series, The Wheel of Time. “Every day I look forward to working with the incredible team here in New Zealand as we humbly contribute to the legacy of the greatest stories ever told.”

From the recent pieces we can tell that... [In reply to] Can't Post

1. Wayne Che Yip had indeed been hired to direct episodes of The Lord of the Rings, and is at the moment doing so with director of photography Aaron Morton.

2. More possible confirmation for continuity with the feature films, given the use of similar fonts.

3. More shooting on shoreside locations, presumably for Numenore and/or Lindon.

4. Che Yip seems to be helming episodes 3-7 out of 8, and will be executive producer.

5. The showrunners still intend to start airing this year.

6. Further validation of the leaked synopsis.

What does this mean: "as we humbly contribute to the legacy of the greatest stories ever told" [In reply to] Can't Post

I was trying to make sense of it in the context of a Tolkien series set in the Second Age.

"as we humbly contribute to the legacy of the greatest stories ever told"

Stories is plural. Does that mean The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit? Or does it mean the three volumes, or films, of the LotR taken as a trilogy?

Legacy is a bequest handed down in time to a later generation. What is the legacy of Tolkien's stories, that they are humbly contributing to with this Amazon series: the New Line films? The tradition of high fantasy? The power of a fandom?

I admit I'm tempted to write this off as a meaningless word salad from a director with better things to do than craft coherent press releases about the joys of joining a production in mid-filming. But does this phrasing tell us anything about how the company views what it is doing, in relation to Tolkien's own works?

Well, that's one episode too many. If he previous rumor is true then Yip might be directing episodes 3 & 4 and 7 & 8.

I imagine that is a reference to TORn's publication of a 'synopsis' in January [In reply to] Can't Post

Not that it was a synopsis, if that means a condensed summary of the plotline. It was more like a reference to the general history of the Second Age, as much as the Second Age related to the Rings of Power and the One Ring.

Definitely a known name in TV right now [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm not too surprised to see her name here.

Edit: I've only seen her 2 episodes of The Witcher (which are the only episodes of that show I've seen, strange as that is to say). Narratively I was a bit confused, by default of not watching prior episodes. But it's an interesting choice, as I recall the second episode being a surprisingly well-contained story in its own right, as far as a show like that goes (I think the main critique of the show was its incomprehensible multiple/overlapping storylines). I couldn't tell you much of what happens, but I remember there being a dragon. Some elements felt a bit B level, in terms of tone/execution, but there was certainly a scale to the filmmaking that I'm sure caught Amazon's eyes. Not something I personally would exactly write home about, but I digress.
