Well, apple crumble for starters - [In reply to] Can't Post

and probably a dark ginger cake with chopped apple in it. The apples keep quite well and I can freeze part of the ginger cake, so that spreads things out a bit. Old letters are fascinating - and becoming increasingly rare. Who writes actual letters on paper these days? Where will people find the written ramblings that make up memoirs?

Hmm, yes, we did notice on the other side of the Pond... [In reply to] Can't Post

That's why I chose the song I did! There's *cough* a rather good parody... My Mum's Dad was a Tommy in the trenches in WW1 - one of the lucky ones, he came home from Ypres missing only his right thumb. My Dad's Dad was a captain in the Merchant navy, mostly trading around the British coast, but helped ferry American GIs over to France a couple of days after D Day. So many stories they must have had - some of which they would no doubt prefer to forget, to be fair!

*looks up "blizzard"* [In reply to] Can't Post

Let's see...would you like the bourbon-and-cranberry Blizzard, or the Irish Whiskey-hazelnut liquer-Bailey's-coffee Blizzard, or the ice cream with mix-ins from Dairy Queen? (The second one sounds quite good! Smile)

15 miles away is too close for comfort, Aunt Dora. Had they been hoping it would burn itself out? Did they have to close off Estes Park because of it?

On a more positive note - have you and Uncle Baggins been able to get some walks in? Smile

I have been making 'Pink Sauce' [In reply to] Can't Post

...which is a sauce with apples, onion, chillies, ginger and vinegar. Very nice.

I've had a lot of apples too. I've allowed an old apple tree in my garden to become overgrown I'm afraid, and I have a few years work ahead of me to rectify that, pruning a bit back every winter.

Meanwhile it 's a bit of a hard hat area, as large apples can plummet from several metres up.

Sounds tasty - [In reply to] Can't Post

I make chutney, which is a bit thick to be called sauce and has similar ingredients, with the additional of sultanas which provide plumptious little chewy bits. Very good with a white crumbly cheese! My daughter's tree is about 40 years old and I agree; an unexpected Bramley can really give you a headache!

We had a mild winter [In reply to] Can't Post

even by our standards - just one half-hearted frost all winter. So I think the berries got a bit enthusiastic! The main crop is still a fair way off, though.

The virtual hot chocolate was most welcome, thank you :)

Ahhhh!! Call me corny, but [In reply to] Can't Post

I love Rach. 2 and 3. As a teenager, they fit my angst entirely, and I'd listen to one or both sometimes twice a day (funny thing to do in a family of violinists). His emotional connections to the piece reminds me of me then--except I couldn't hold a candle in my violin playing then or now to his piano playing here!

Candles be darned. What a performance. Thank you!!

Oh no, oh no. [In reply to] Can't Post

Where is it? Are you guys OK in your area?

Crazy fire story: my brother's Italian/French mother-in-law recounted to us the story of a huge fire that was coming up the back of a mountain bordering where they lived in Marseille. One night they could see the flames approaching over the ridge, and she said to her husband "Let's get in the car and go" (he was a professor, language teacher, a kind and humorous intellectual, and a prince among all human beings--his life was cut way too short by Leukemia). He replied, "no, the good Lord will protect us." And the flames, somehow, just never got close and they stayed put safely. Hoping the same for you.

Please do keep us posted!

I think you should do an actual documentary! [In reply to] Can't Post

Especially because you have the skills.

It's hard to pass memories on--my kids don't have much interest in some actually very interesting family stories, so they won't get passed down very easily. Something on film makes stories interesting even to the historically--uninterested type of person. If you think you could manage it, I bet you'd never regret it. Smile

Last summer my cousin found [In reply to] Can't Post

2 bundles of letters in a big trunk of keepsakes my grandmother had left n my aunt's house. They were both compete sets of WWII letters home, one was a bundle of my aunt's husband's letters, and the other one of my dad's (from the Philippines)! What stories. I am scanning them all in and have 16 left to do. Three of them have holes cut out by sensors (oops! Dad!).

It's been a trip back in time for sure [In reply to] Can't Post

And it was nice to see how sentimental my dad was about his folks when he wrote to them.
But one of my favorite lines is: "I haven't heard from Eleanor. I'm not even sure now I care to hear from her." Better write now, Eleanor, or you've missed a great guy.
Oh, wait . . . Laugh (He didn't marry Eleanor.)

Your grand aunt! She must have many stories from the "old days", and family secrets, I bet! Heart

I admire people who can play pieces like that from memory - it's like being able to recite all of LotR! Amazing mental skill and concentration.

It's crossed my mind more than once lately [In reply to] Can't Post

You obviously need a willing subject first, but I know that I'd need to get going on it sooner than later if I were to seriously approach the idea.

I will mull it over, but thank you for the encouragement in the meantime! Smile And that's too bad - it seems like so many people don't become interested in family history until the person they'd want to talk about it with has passed on.

Hehe! [In reply to] Can't Post

Cool

And yes! It's funny, since I almost only get things from my grandmother's perspective, so it's cute to hear a slightly different recollection from her younger sister. But she has 7 living siblings, so I suppose that's a lot of perspectives floating around. Angelic

Agreed. I think I would have the paralyzing fear of having to itch my nose or something similar and forgetting my place (can you imagine a pianist having a sneeze they just can't get out?). So glad I am not a live performer!

*wanders in from wild* [In reply to] Can't Post

Thank you for grabbing the keys, dernwyn! Some warm apple cider sounds so great! Thanks again :D

I've been meeting myself coming and going for the past several days, but it's hopefully settling down now. My neighbor down the Road has been helping cut down the last 3 HUGE trees that fell in my yard during a HUGE wind storm that hit last June. He's a wonderful guy and I welcome his chainsaw that's able to handle the size of the tree trunks, but... as it is for farmers... he's pretty much available when he shows up.

My Sister and I made it to Charlevoix and Lake Michigan. It looks like it was the last beautiful day of weather and Fall tree colours of the season. Literally the next day the wind picked up along with the rain and pretty-much cleared the trees of most of their leaves. Charlevoix is a full week ahead of my neck of the woods in the progress of seasonal changes, and my trees are already 3/4 of the way done. *sigh* Nature is so busy this time of year :D The day with Sis and Lake Michigan was wonderful... mostly walking along the shoreline, picking up pebbles and rocks, and lots of chatter. We each found a small Petosky stone! We're already making plans to do this again in the Spring.

I hope everyone has had a great weekend and will enjoy a fabulous week. :D *waves fondly* Stay Safe!
