Gimli in The Hobbit

I have a running bet with my wife that Gimli is in The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey or at least a voice cameo by John Rhys-Davies. I thought I would turn to the experts. I think he is in the opening sequence when Smaug is first attacking Erebor. After Bilbo’s narration line of “...cracked in the hot dry wind” a dwarf makes it up the stairs right before Thorin. You can’t see the dwarf’s face but he makes a grunt, very distinctive and it sure sounds like Gimli to me! I believe John Rhys-Davies showed up for a couple of days while they were filming...I would imagine just long enough for some voice work. Sorry if this has already been posted or discussed. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks and I hope everyone is having a wonderful day!

Possibly JRD; almost certainly not Gimli.

Unfortunately, one grunt isn't much to go on. John Rhys-Davies could conceivably have gotten a cameo in that scene, but couldn't possibly have been playing Gimli. Gloin's boy was supposed to have been born in the Blue Mountains in the year 2879 (Third Age) long after Smaug invaded Erebor. In Tolkien's legendarium, Smaug drove the Dwarves out of Erebor in 2770. For the films, my best estimate is that it couldn't have happened later than 2820. I don't think that Gimli's year of birth could be pushed back enough to place him in Erebor prior to The Hobbit even as an infant.

but if they can bring back a long-dead orc for the Hobbit trilogy, why not push up Gimli's birth? I lost any faith in their adherence to Tolkien's timelines (or even do math) when they decided to revive Azog the Defiler.

That would be a very puzzling decision...

I lost any faith in their adherence to Tolkien's timelines (or even do math) when they decided to revive Azog the Defiler. ...given that Tolkien's in-universe explanation for Gimli not accompanying Thorin & Company was that the Dwarf-lad was too young (or at least too immature, considering that Gimli was only 20 years younger than Fili). Even in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Gloin refers to Gimli as his "wee lad". There's no way he could have been an adult, or even an adolescent, in Erebor at the coming of Smaug.

Two reasons: 1) If JRD had made a cameo appearance, there would have been no reason to keep it secret, His visit to the Bad End set is shown in the AUJ EE appendices, And Stephen Colbert's cameo IS featured in the DoS EE appendix. 2) Even if JRD secretly got back into the prosthetics and make-up that made him so miserable and made a cameo appearance in AUJ, his character doesn't have to be Gimli. Did anyone notice a Dwarf that looked like Gimli? I didn't but I'm not very observant.

there came a point where literally nothing PJ could have done would have surprised me. A full-grown Gimli showing up to challenge Legolas to a drinking/farting competition would have made just as much sense as anything else.
