Hey, Evey! Got some coffee brewing behind the bar? [In reply to] Can't Post

It's a sunny but chilly day. Yesterday we had a soup/salad/bread luncheon here (I brought a pasta salad which the staff devoured - new recipe, looks like it's a keeper! Laugh), and we're all nibbling on a few leftovers today.

I was at my Mom-in-law's all last weekend, so I'll need to do some house-cleaning this weekend. There's no snow on the ground - I do miss having a bit in winter! I'm wondering if we're going to get walloped with a major snowstorm or two in March...

How's things with you?

Glad the new recipe was a success, and hope you have a great weekend (despite the cleaning, LOL), dernwyn! :)

A mimosa to start the day, please barkeep! [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm at my computer eating cereal and listening to evidence that one of my neighbours has a rooster. One part of me thinks it's cute; another part is glad I'm not an immediate neighbour. (The blighter won't shut up.)

Overnight we finally, finally got decent rain! Proper saturating rain that the thirsty ground can drink in. I've got my fingers crossed that the front reached the places around the North Island that are desperately dry - including a friend in the north whose water tank is down to a fortnight's supply if they're very careful with their use.

Happy end of the week, everyone! :)

Hi everyone! Still adventuring. [In reply to] Can't Post

We made our way across to the West Coast of the South Island yesterday, through the remnants of some heavy rain that made the steep, bush-covered landscape even more dramatic than usual. Waterfalls on all sides (some actually spilling over the road), with the permanent ones in full flow and hundreds of temporary falls. A lovely journey, but we were ready to settle in to our cozy lodgings when we got here at last.

From before we headed west:
Where we stopped for lunch when kayaking on Lake Manapouri.
Fiordland, a road trip on the part of the road not closed by the recent storms:
Eglinton Valley.
Mirror Lakes

One of the waterfalls from yesterday.

Tomorrow we plan to get back out on the water. Today's a rain day, and we're going to visit some kiwi (the feathered sort).

Wishing everyone a pleasant weekend.

we've done that drive, and the first was nigh on twenty years ago. Certainly worth a repeat visit.

The foot is behaving fairly well, thanks for asking. Very little pain, although a bit of grumbling today because it's jolly *cold* out there (12 degrees at 2 pm).

We just saw a bunch of tuatara, and one is called Ataahua :)

Building a cat house [In reply to] Can't Post

(well, assembling) a shelter for the abandoned and feral cats outside. They seem afraid of the plastic flaps, so we are trying to lure them in with cat food cans of smelly salmon. The shelter has a heated pad now that our week of winter weather has arrived.

Hey there, Evey! [In reply to] Can't Post

Thank you for taking such great care of us!

I GOT SKUNKED!!! :D Not literally, but odourificly (last Tuesday). As I've said before, it's one of my 3 signs of Spring coming soon! The smell of skunks fills the air as they come out of hibernation is usually the first, followed by syrup buckets being hung on the town's Sugar Maple Trees (none yet), and topped off by Canadian geese flying overhead. I love the sound of their wings cutting through the air. You can tell they're moving a lot of air and torque by how pronounced it is.

I'm going to watch the true story of the 1980 US Olympic Hockey Team's 40th Anniversary (today!) win against the Soviet Union's long-dominant team. One of the best come-from-behind stories of incredible team-work and determination ever, imho. It's known as the greatest sports moment in the 20th century. If you haven't seen the movie "Miracle", give it a look. During the final game, much of the announcer's calls are the actual recording... including that last exciting shout! *goosebumps*

I'm also a bit nervous because I just committed to assembling and painting the Mumak of Harad model. I've always preferred this version of the great Oliphaunt that captured Sam's imagination to the "official" statue of the fallen Mumak.... so I'm pretty geeked about this and really, really hope it turns out! I won't be starting it for a while, but I'm gathering all the supplies I'll need that I don't already have. *bites nails*

Have a great weekend everyone!

Something to crow about!?! [In reply to] Can't Post

Never necessary for a rooster! But in the distance (far distant), its like a train whistle or a lighthouse fog horn... there's something endearing about it. Being in the country here, I'm surprised there's aren't more roosters and chickens. Having it that close does make it inescapable... so I hope he calms down once he properly claims his territory.

There is a farm about 2 miles away that has peacocks. I pass by them during my walks around the block. Now THERE is something I would shudder to live any closer to! Mercy they're call is loud and obnoxious! Makes you think you're in the jungle. But they're very neat to watch and I love their feathers!

I hope the rain fills everyone's tanks. Not so much that it causes damage, but a replenishing wash would be so great. It also gives you a break from watering your garden/flowers.

Have a great weekend!

That's so great! [In reply to] Can't Post

Making a shelter for your outdoor kitties is awesome! Especially with the heating pad. I have to admit I didn't have much luck making an enclosure like that for my outdoor cats. They seemed to be scared of being in an place where they couldn't see their surroundings, so I ended up putting a large platform in the garage at the window (so can see out) with some clean straw (doesn't mold like hay) and old blankets. I also built a fortress up to the ceiling of stacked straw bales leaving their entry about 2 ft between the bales. I have a heat lamp WELL AWAY from the bales hanging from the rafter overhead for the bitterly cold days (sub-zero). That's the only place they'd hang out. So I hope yours works! It could be that me being in farm country has a different intensity/necessity for preservation. Let us know how it goes :D

I really hope there is a refund coming. I ended paying out last year for the first time in my life. I usually got about $300 back every year; but had to pay $240. No change in income since I'm retired. So it kinda felt like a $540 hit I wasn't expecting. *sigh* My kids and sibs had the same outcome.

Have a great weekend, m'dear! :D

I took some time today to make oatmeal-chocolate chip cookies, haven't done that in ages! Laugh

Mom's doing as well as can be. She's working through the loneliness part of it now, actually shooing us out so she can have her time alone. But we did leave her with a jigsaw puzzle to finish, a nice wintery scene with homes and ice skaters.

That salad: Cook half a bag of very small pasta.
While it's cooking, chop up a small head of broccoli, a red pepper, a small red onion, a seeded cucumber, and an 8-ounce bar of cheddar jack or other cheese (make small cubes), and mix in a large bowl. Then mix 3/4 cup mayo, 2 tsp cider vinegar, 1 tsp sugar, dash of salt & pepper in a small bowl. Dump the cooked pasta into the large bowl, add the mayo mix, and mix it all together and chill. I used ditalini pasta the first time, next I'll try it with the tiny shell pasta.

I'm concerned the bushes will start budding...not good, if the temps turn cold again!
