A newbie-esque question Can't Post

*dips toe in water* Ok... I'm having a crisis because I want to be able to watch the Middle-earth TV series, but I know nothing about streaming and how to set it up. I've avoided this because I know there's going to be an added cost and I'm on a budget; but having the shows so close now, I really want to see if I can swing it. It's why I haven't been on the Board knowing I wasn't planning on having access.

I've tried checking online of how it all works, but nobody speaks gramma. Everyone assumes the whole world already knows this... like having a smart phone. I don't have one of those, either. I get that blank stare from people when they say, "Just get the app" and I show them my flip phone.

Can you give me an uncomplicated, easy checklist of what I need to do and what my best options (least expensive) would be? I have an Amazon account (non-prime). My internet is via jetpack modem (bounce off cellphone towers) and I have DISH satellite for TV. I do NOT have unlimited internet. Just point me in the right direction PLEASE and THANK YOU! :D

Well, I THINK that if you sign up for Amazon Prime, then you can access their shows! But don't take my word for it, I haven't signed up for Prime. Yet.

So when you do, they should show up on the computer screen...

How old is your TV, and what kind? Mine's a Smart TV, and when I push a colorful button on the remote, it pops up little boxes for Netflix, Amazon, etc., which I can arrow-over to and select, then wait a minute while the TV looks for my router's wireless signal. Or you could get an ethernet cable and hardwire it to the modem.

(Unfortunately, Samsung "Smart" TVs do not support Acorn TV, so I have a 50-ft HDMI cable which I run from the computer to the TV in order to watch my British shows! Laugh This could also work for your TV and Amazon.)

I "graduated" to a simple smart-phone a couple of years ago (I do miss the pull-out keyboard on my old non-smart-phone, though). An app to use on your phone? How in the world can one enjoy a show, watching it that small!

I cheat [In reply to] Can't Post

and just watch streamed shows (Netfilx, Neon) on my computer. I know that my new Freeview box can connect wirelessly to my modem but the thought of working out how to do it just makes me tired.

So I'm entirely with you on this one, gramma!

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

Yes, Prime does include access to their original series. [In reply to] Can't Post

(I recommend 'The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel' when and if you do get Prime.) If Gramma's TV is only two years old it probably does include streaming access, though it might be something you have to access from a menu rather than a dedicated button on the remote. She might want to try streaming a free service like YouTube first before shelling out for Prime just to make sure her internet setup is good for streaming; I don't know anything about Jetpack.

If the TV doesn't support streaming, a $30 Roku will do the trick.

Aha! [In reply to] Can't Post

Howdy LRon :D

That's a great idea about trying youtube first. The Jetpack (Verizon) is a modem I have to use to access internet. Roku... I'll check in on that. THANK YOU!

Looking further, I find out... [In reply to] Can't Post

that you can access Prime through Dish if your receiver is a Hopper 3: https://my.dish.com/primevideo, in which case it doesn't matter how smart your TV is or whether your modem can deliver data fast enough for streaming video. If I'm understanding them correctly you'd first sign up for Prime directly with Amazon, and then go through a setup thing with your Dish remote.

Awesome! [In reply to] Can't Post

And so weird that I was JUST JUST JUST looking at signing up for the hopper option... like 10 minutes ago! That would be the easiest option. Thanks Oh Synchronized One!
