Walk to Rivendell... and Beyond! November 7

Greetings Fellow Walkers! How are you coming along on your Quest? When I ask this, I imagine so many variations of what a Quest could be. Getting that basement cleaned up? Preparing for a marathon/race competition? Working on a personal goal of losing [another] 5 pounds? Getting the yard and gardens ready for the changing season? Completing a half-hour of exercise when you really don't have the time or a physical limitation you're working to overcome? We all have our own journey... which makes every motivation and effort worthwhile :) I'm still trying to keep up with Gandalf, Bilbo, and the dwarves as we leave the new statues in the forest and their oh-so-pleasant hole full of filth. Having the chance to finger and hide some gold and jools has really lifted the spirits of the dwarves; but Bilbo was thinking about his comfy chair and a warm drink in front of the fireplace at Bag End. *waves fondly* See you on the Road!

Greetings Fellow Walkers! I hope you're enjoying some great strides in your Walk goals! I don't know about you, but with the holidays quickly approaching... I'm going to be indulging in some wonderful food-stuffs that will probably undo a lot of my work ;) However... I can't wait to suffer the setback! FOOD!!!!! :D Are you doing some pre-holiday extra exercising/walking or just focus on the aftermath? I'm going to be on the Road across 4 or 5 states, so I'll just deal with the aftermath and enjoy my family times. Gandalf, Bilbo, the dwarves and I have FINALLY just crossed the Ford of Bruinen River that borders Rivendell. So now we're watching Gandalf as he searches for the proper path to Rivendell! ALMOST THERE! I hope you have a great week and have much satisfaction in your Journey! See you on the Road!

I need to look at those charts

and it's funny, being a math geek and a Tolkien geek, I should be all over them, but for some reason I'm not. But I will, eventually. What I can say is that I was an intermittent walker before. Then 6 weeks ago I spent a night in the ER and then had my appendix removed at 5 am, and as part of my recovery, they said I must walk as soon as possible after surgery and then continue walking every day after. Then comparing notes later with others who've had other surgeries, that is the new thing, even if you've had knee surgery and a nurse has to help you. (When my parents had surgeries back in the late 1980s, by contrast, they were told to stay in bed and let their body heal; moving was a no-no.) So, since then, I've been walking every day except rainy days, first 30 min, and now at least an hour. And I lost 20 pounds/9 kilos! (That's also due to a change in appetite, but still.) So I continue to walk an hour a day for 4 miles/6.4 km. My main goal is to make this a permanent habit. Reading about exercise psychology, you're far more likely to make exercise a habit if you find positive motivation for it. So, instead of looking in a mirror and saying, "I'm fat and ugly, I need to exercise," you need to say "I enjoy the group energy of a gym. I enjoy the feeling of lifting weights. I enjoy walking in fresh air," etc. I'm working on that aspect too.

The nice thing about the charts

You can cut and past them into a word file so you can search and move through them at will. I copied them back in March 2003 when we started. I put dates and notes in the event lines that give me a great reference and continuity. Like getting in the right frame of mind for walking, adapting the lists for yourself is a process. If you think of how many miles you've walked just in the past week, month, year... you'd fly through the charts in no time! For me, following the Fellowship on the Road gives more meaning to the mileage I'm already doing... "literally" tracking where I am :D

Greetings Fellow Walkers! I hope you're enjoying some great progress in your Quest :) The beauty of this Walk is that you're not tied to a pack... unless it's the Fellowship ;) You choose your own goal (or go goal-free), pick your own path, and go at your own pace. Our achievements are our own personal wins... and that appeals to me! But you know that right here is your cheering section that is with you all the way in all ways! My past week or so was a free-for-all marathon that had me stopping in my tracks more than a few times... putting my hands out from my side and saying, "Hold on... I'm getting overwhelmed! I need to do this, this, this, this and that. I've got to prioritize and get moving!" I was helping Dex (my ex) during his recovery from an accident who is feeling MUCH better. In feeling better and having a clearer mind from meds, he's got A LOT he wants to do... but can't yet do for himself. *points to head* Hence gramma running; but it's ALL good stuff! Heck, I do the same thing to myself all the time! :D But it ended up being a great workout and a very simplified diet (1 day-slice of toast & handful of pretzels). "You step into the Road, and if you don't keep your feet, there is no knowing where you might be swept off to." Bilbo, Gandalf, the dwarves and I are celebrating a milestone. We finally made it to Rivendell AND have completed the chart taking us from Bag End to Rivendell. So here's a little something I stuck in the mail for you ;) *waves fondly* See you on the Road!

Greetings Fellow Walkers! How many of you are still eating Thanksgiving leftovers? *hand shoots up* This is NOT a problem, imho. The club sandwiches with bacon, lettuce, tomato, and turkey are as yummy as the original dinner!!! :D But I definitely have some extra work to do to off-set the delightful dining I've been doing for the past couple of days... with promises of continuing the onslaught TODAY! So how are you faring on this Holiday Weekend... if there's one going on in your neck of the woods? I wish we could get mileage for miles driven. My SUV, Hobbity, and I have driven over 1,000 miles in the past 3 days with another 600 due this week. When all is told, I'll have driven over 5,300 miles since mid-August. Brave Hobbity has proven to be a sturdy beast without hesitation to boogie on down the Road... showing amazing power when gramma needed to fly by the fools! :D Gandalf, Bilbo, the dwarves and I have started the next Chart by Karen Wynn Fonstad as we travel from Rivendell to Lonely Mountain. We're tackling the Misty Mountain foothills... which are always so much fun! *upchuck* Have a great weekend... and I'll see you on the Road!

After two full days of gorging on Thanksgiving food, I finally waddled out to walk a very chilly three miles early this morning! I barely managed even that much, because my legs were going so numb and stiff. From the cold, not the extra weight. ;)

Greetings Fellow Travellers! I hope you're enjoying good weather and good health :) I hope you're enjoying getting in some mileage. Have some fun creating different ways of building up those numbers and watch your progress grow! I just finished up the globe-trotting I've been tackling since August. You'd think I'd lose weight with all that action, but hours of driving and eating so many meals on the Road has had the opposite effect. *sigh* So here goes again with playing tag with numbers on the scale. Gandalf, Bilbo, the dwarves and I had some excitement since leaving Rivendell. As we climbed over the mountains, we got caught in a thunder-battle by some Stone Giants! We took shelter in a cave but were caught again! This time by some Goblins. We're just now scooting through the mountain after escaping and are counting noses. *waves fondly* See you on the Road!
