The One Ring standard edition pre-order is live. Can't Post

Cubicle 7 has announced:

Quote
Today we are excited to announce that the pre-order for the standard edition of The One Ring – The Lord of the Rings™ Roleplaying Game is now live! Unlike our normal pre-orders, the complimentary PDF copy will be delivered as soon as the PDF is ready, which is estimated to be October 2019. We have had huge demand to pre-order this product, so we are starting this pre-order early to minimise disappointment. Don’t miss out! You can pre-order your copy here.

The 352 page core features updated rules based on years of feedback, stunning new art, and a beautifully illustrated map of Middle-earth. The game contains everything you and your friends will need to adventure in the lands of Middle-earth, including:

- A complete set of rules for roleplaying in Middle-earth
- Instructions for how to create your character and forge your own fellowship
- 11 unique Cultures and 6 different Callings to choose from
- A bestiary of enemies to face, from creeping Giant Spiders and hungry Wargs, to vicious Orcs and terrifying Stone-trolls
- Advice for telling stories that evoke the spirit and feeling of the The Hobbit™ and The Lord of the Rings™
- A complete Tale of Years spanning from the origins of the Third Age up to the default starting year of 2965 and beyond.

I will be pre-ordering this for myself (suddenly glad I never got around for purchasing the single-volume printing of the original edition of the game).

The One Ring 2nd Ed Character Customisation [In reply to] Can't Post

Since the announcement posting for The One Ring Second Edition has dropped off the front page, I'll post this here. From Cubicle 7:

Quote
Hello, it’s #TORSday again and we thought we would talk a bit more about character customisation in The One Ring – The Lord of the Rings™ Roleplaying Game 2nd Ed. We’ve already talked a bit about Attributes and how they now impact the Target Number (TN) for your skills. We’ve talked a little about the eleven different Cultures, each with their own Backgrounds, Cultural Blessings and Rewards. Likewise, we’ve dropped a few hints about the six Callings and how they will have a strong influence on your character for Common Skills, Hope and Shadow and today’s subject — Specialties and Traits.

The One Ring 2nd Ed Combat [In reply to] Can't Post

Jacob Rodgers is back with another great post on combat for our upcoming The One Ring The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying Game! We also have some new art to share with you! Let us know what you think over on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

It’s #TORsday again, and it’s time for a fight! While heroes in The One Ring The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying Game rarely seek out combat, they are forced to fight against the servants of the Enemy from time to time. Combat is an important, but infrequent, part of the game.

The One Ring Playtesting [In reply to] Can't Post

We have been busy play-testing the upcoming The One Ring – The Lord of the Rings™ Roleplaying Game 2nd Ed here in the C7 office.

The One Ring Producer Emmet Byrne, artist JG O’ Donoghue (who’s work you may recognise from The Shire and Minas Tirith pieces), Wrath & Glory Producer Zak Dale-Clutterbuck and CEO Dom McDowall had a fun and eventful run-through of our Starter Set adventure after work last week. The adventure, written by Jacob Rodgers, is set in The Misty Mountains and sees the heroes tasked by Gandalf with retrieving and ancient relic that has the ability to rouse Giants from their slumber. The Company must find the artefact before it falls into the hands of The Enemy, and then travel down the Anduin to meet Gandalf in Minas Tirith. The adventure does a fantastic job of teaching new players how to play The One Ring and is also a great introduction to veterans, who can get up to speed on many of the changes with second edition.

More at the link. I see that the new core book has a more extensive map of Middle-earth that extends from the Ice Bay of Forochel to the Havens of Umbar, and east past the Sea of Rhûn.

The One Ring: Councils [In reply to] Can't Post

Welcome to #TORsday, strangers. It’s time for a meeting, a rather important one, about Councils in The One Ring The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying Game.

In second edition, Councils replace Encounters as the most socially focused of the three primary adventuring activities (the other two being Combat and Journeys). Not every meeting is worthy of a Council — you can meet friendly folk at The Prancing Pony, negotiate with a wily trader, or question a suspicious stranger just by using the core skills and good roleplaying. But when the Company meets with the Great and the Good, their behaviour can influence those lords and ladies, causing them to render greater assistance or shoo away rude troublemakers.

More at the link above. I think the most valuable thing to come out of this article is the clarification on when it is appropriate to use the Encounter/Council rules.

The One Ring: Journeys

Pack your bags! It’s #TORsday and it’s time for a trip. With the reveal of the stunning map for second edition, now is the perfect time to talk about travelling in The One Ring – The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying Game. Like Councils and Combat, Journeys are a core component of the game.

NOT ALL THOSE WHO WANDER ARE LOST
It wouldn’t be inaccurate to call either The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings an adventure travelogue, though, of course, there’s more to those stories than just the trip itself. In The One Ring, a Journey is an important part of an adventure — in fact, the entire adventure might play out over the course of one or more Journeys. Heroes might be sent to carry urgent news to faraway rulers, to seek out lost places or stranded travellers, to spy on agents of the Enemy, to guide others to safety, or arrive to bolster the defences of a stronghold. In each case, the trip matters.

Player's Map:

Companions still take on roles for the Journey as in the first edition. Hexes on the maps now represent 20 miles instead of 10. Each leg of the Journey may generate Journey Events. The difficulty of terrain still factors into travel times.

The One Ring 2nd Ed. Fellowship Phase [In reply to] Can't Post

A new post at Cubicle 7 focuses on the Fellowship Phase in The One Ring – The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying Game:

Quote
Welcome back to another #TORsday! We’ve already had quite an adventure: We’ve talked a bit about the characters, the maps, and lots about Councils, Combat, and Journeys. Now it is time to head home (or at least to a safe place), where we can relax and perhaps reflect upon our experiences.

The Fellowship Phase is a critical part of The One Ring. It was one of the most innovative parts of the first edition and is now a staple in a lot of modern RPGs. It allows heroes to have a home and a safe place in the world to return to after facing untold dangers during their adventures. In the second edition of the game, Fellowship Phases come in several sizes, depending on how much time the heroes are taking to recover. During Year’s End, most Companies take an extended break, allowing heroes to return home for festivities.

A short Fellowship Phase lasts just a few weeks, allowing a hero to improve themselves somewhat and undertake one special task. A medium length phase allows two activities, and a long Fellowship Phase allows three undertakings. During this time, the Loremaster should reference the information included in the Tale of Years to show the Player-heroes the passage of time and remind them that the world moves on while they rest. Campaigns such as The Darkening of Mirkwood and The Errantries of the King have a number of yearly events that help to bring the world to life.

The biggest changes seem to be the addition of the medium Fellowship Phase and the number of Undertakings allowed in the Year's End Fellowship Phase. I've pre-ordered my copy of the standard edition and I'll be looking over the PDF carefully once I receive it. Hopefully, the next announcement might give us a date for the release of the PDF.

The One Ring 2nd Ed: The Shadow [In reply to] Can't Post

Posted at Cubicle 7:

Quote
We have faced much on our adventure through second edition together, from starting out our heroes, meeting others , fighting the Enemy, travelling the wide world and even returning home . But now our tale must turn to darker things — we must speak of the Shadow, the great enemy whose defeat is impossible, unless the most unlikeliest of chances should occur.

Each age of Middle-earth has felt the dominion of a Dark Lord, an evil being relentless in its desire to dominate all the land. Heroes that stand against the Enemy must be especially vigilant, as in their desire to oppose it they may be tempted to make expedient decisions that darken their own hearts and allow the Enemy to corrupt them further.

By simply opposing Sauron, heroes will suffer corruption: whether by experiencing distressing events, adventuring in blighted places, or trying to achieve great ends and failing. Those that become frustrated and seek easier and more violent paths that promise power without bounds become corrupted even more easily: whether by committing despicable misdeeds, taking possession of corrupt treasure or artefacts, or by breaking their vows or manipulating others.
