Gandalf or Magneto?

So I was home today because we got some snow so the University closed, and I ended up watching the first "X-Men" movie for the first time in awhile. I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed Ian McKellan's performance in this - really the first thing I can remember seeing him in. I also remember when I read that Ian was cast as Gandalf in FoTR, and thinking "oh, that'll be interesting!" So really, Sir Ian has played two iconic characters, so I'm wondering which performance is better - Gandalf or Magneto? Also included "Other," because so many insist that all polls need this option So, who's best, Gandalf or Magneto?

so I have to choose Gandalf. Even if I had been a fan, I'd still choose Gandalf.

(Strangely enough, many fans objected to McKellen as Gandalf out of concern he would be too heavily identified with Magneto.)

Only 4 of the 12 episodes are known to exist. BTW, some fans also objected to McKellen's casting on the basis he was an open (indeed, politically active) homosexual. They felt it would "taint" the book and films somehow.

Actually until checking his filmography, I never realized that was him! But I remember his line, "I don't do fiction".

He was also great in Stephen King's Apt Pupil (1998)

...changing from a seemingly harmless old man to a menacing and manipulative Nazi fugitive. And of course as Annael notes, Amos Starkadder is a highlight in Cold Comfort Farm (1995). Also he's fantastic starring in his own adaptation of Richard III set in 1930s Britain. Very highly recommended.

Great movie. I couldn't finish watching Apt Pupil - it disturbed me far too much.

old Sherlock ruled in Mr. Holmes. Seriously, I love the X-Men, but Gandalf is the iconic Wizard.

But Ian McKellan is just a great actor - I don't know that he's bad in anything he's ever done. He's definitely the iconic wizard, but I voted "Tie" because he was SOOOOO GOOD as Magneto!

I thought he was awesome as Magneto! He is a villain you can't hate! McKellan brought an awesome performance as the X-Men character! But, he will always be the wizard to us.

'Cos I haven't seen X-Men! For one glorious moment there I thought 'Magneto' was a chocolate ice lolly - then I remembered that was 'Magnum'....

...is one of those awesome characters who has depth and complexity. You see where he comes from and why he is what he is. And Sir Ian just gave him so much awesome.
