6" Thorin Wool Dolls (& Hobbit Christmas Presents) Can't Post

Hi, again! Here are some more needle-felted Thorin dolls. These are a little smaller than the big one that I posted last year. My sister and I have two friends (also sisters) who are crazy about "The Hobbit" as we are, and we really wanted to make something special for them for Christmas last year, so we decided to do an entirely Middle Earth themed box with two Thorin dolls in the center. They are both really nuts about Thorin, so we decided to make one doll in the classic "travelling" costume and one doll in the black coat and armour tunic as seen in the final battle sequence. These two little dolls stand just over six inches tall and are totally needle-felted wool. Their belts and arm guards are leather, and they have metal rings and hair bands. The shiny "armour" on the dolls is made of fabric, and their boots are fur trimmed and leather wrapped.

I've put a picture here showing the two dolls together, and the second picture shows the three different Thorin dolls that we've made so far! (Sort of like the Three Bears in "Goldilocks" . . . small, medium and large!)
Larger pictures of all the angles can be seen here: http://sarahbethonline.com/112dolls/thorindoll.html

I'll be back shortly with more pictures to show some of the other things in the box!

More Pictures . . . [In reply to] Can't Post

Here are the Thorin dolls in little wrapped boxes. We sent them in a wooden cabinet, so the cabinet was wrapped up (see biggest package in third photo) with the two dolls inside. They were each in these little boxes inside the cabinet.

This is the big box that we sent. All four sides were decorated with Hobbit-style writing and Christmas messages!

All of presents inside were packaged in "Middle Earth Post" parcel style. My sister drew them all with individual post marks and notes. If the presents were dwarf-themed, then they went by "Erebor Post". Hobbit-themed presents were sent via "Shire Mail" --- and one package went by hand from Lake-Town!

More pictures coming of some of the other presents.

Other "Middle Earth Souvenirs" [In reply to] Can't Post

We tried to make a ton of the presents like real "Middle Earth Souvenirs". These are Erebor gems (made of glass, or course!) which each fit into their own hand-sewn 100% silk pouch with a branded leather tag that says "Souvenir of Erebor".

These mini bottles are filled with genuine white sand and a small white sea shell. The corks are sealed on with red wax, and little tags say "White Shores Sand".

My sister made this Little Bilbo doll (he stands about 6-1/2" tall) completely by hand. Everything was sewn by hand, her own pattern, embroidered face and wool-yarn hair. The shirt is made of cotton fabric, the vest and pants are wool felt and the jacket is corduroy.

Another post of pictures coming in a minute!

Final pics of Middle Earth Souvenirs [In reply to] Can't Post

Here's another of the "Middle Earth Souvenirs" that we made. This is a Lake-Town souvenir in a blue glass bottle. The cork is held on by a twine wrapping which has a dangling leather tag saying "Souvenir of Lake-Town". Behind the tag is a rolled piece of parchment (see third picture).

Everything in the bottle was burnt before I put it in --- with a good quantity of ash in the bottom!

Your friends and family are so lucky! [In reply to] Can't Post

Any of us would be delighted to have so much care put into "just" gift wrapping - not to mention the contents of the package!

Gift Wrapping [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks! We had a lot of fun on this. It took an entire day just to get the presents wrapped and packed . . . and we didn't finish until about 7:30pm! There were some other presents in there that I couldn't find the pictures of right away. My sister drew Thorin's two swords (Dwarven and Orchrist) and matted them (that's the flat package!), and a few other things. It was the nicest Christmas box that we have ever put together and SO MUCH fun!! It took months to make all of the presents. We were started by September, I think. :)

Wow! [In reply to] Can't Post

What a fantastic gift! So much care and detail in everything, and so creative with the packaging and souvenirs. Love Thorin. White Shores sand *snif*

How exactly does one go about applying for the spot as your new best friend? Wink

I didn't notice that at first - a sly little fun detail. Laugh

Thanks! [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi! Thanks for all the nice words. My sister and I had a great time making all of these. We've never really had friends who appreciated Middle Earth like we do, and we actually met these sisters online. In fact, we've never met face to face, any of the four of us! :) It was thrilling to be able to make up a whole package that was Middle Earth themed.

They did the same for us and made special packages with a big Middle Earth present in the middle for each of us. Here is a picture of their packages that they sent:

And these are some pictures of what what in there (the main white packages!):

They were wrapped in the white net because they were delivered via the Mirkwood Mail Route and were delayed by spiders. The dolls are totally hand-made and quite large. Bilbo measures up for 2T size clothes! Here's a picture of them "playing" my sister's piano . . . just to give an idea of their size. I am hoping to take pictures of them with a measuring stick and being held, which would give a good idea of the size. I'd also like to put them up on a webpage, so that the photos would be larger. :) They are really amazing!

Bilbo's little suit has a fully hand-embroidered pocket with the "BB" on it. Fili's hair is made of three different yarns and all of the hair bands are hand-embroidered to look like decorated metal.
