U2's The Joshua Tree 20yrs on Can't Post

Tomorrow sees the 20th anniversary of the release of U2's Joshua Tree and I thought that it was worth a mention.I can't believe that 20yrs have gone by since 'With Or Without You', 'Where The Streets Have No Name' and 'I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For'.The album is one everyone who loves music should own.The songs are still powerful today.

20yrs later and U2 are still going strong.I have been a die-hard fan of the band for more than half my life, and I still think it amazing that Bono, Edge, Adam & Larry are still together doing what they love. The fact that they are releasing a new CD later this year fills me with an excitement that no other group can match.U2 still deliver the rousing, emotional songs that are at the heart of their success.I can't wait to see them live againHeart

Me too! [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for posting this, I now feel even more incredibly old!

I have seen them quite a few times in concert and it's always a wonderful experience. I'm happy to say my kids are fans as well.
Their music is timeless and they truly "walk the walk".

Has it really been 20 years? [In reply to] Can't Post

That's incredible. I can still remember getting The Joshua Tree for Christmas and lying in my bed with the earphones on, listening to the whole album from start to finish without moving an inch. I can also remember a couple of great concerts during the Zoo TV thing. I'd love to see them live again.

and I can attest to the part about the streets have no name. We surmise it is because they don't want the tourists to get bitten by rattlesnakes. Many of the more dangerous trails weren't on the official maps.

I didn't get the album the year it came out. [In reply to] Can't Post

But I remember when I did buy it, I had gotten another CD at the same time by a so-called "Christian" artist, and I was stunned and even a little appalled that the secular U2 album had more Christian overtones and even overt Biblical references than the record by the religious artist. (Appalled at the "Christian" artist, not at U2.)

  • The greatest miracle in the Bible is when Joshua told his son to stand still and he obeyed him.

  • Christians have only one spouse. This is called monotony.

I snuggled on a sofa watching music videos with a boy [In reply to] Can't Post

I had loved him from afar for years. It was our first date. "With or Without You" came on. He got all moody because it reminded him of his old girlfriend. It was our last date. I held a grudge against U2 for a long time.

I went to Bodie [In reply to] Can't Post

The black & white photos of U2 that were shot for The Joshua Tree were done there.I remember walking around the ghost town for a while but then running to the car as the sky turned completely black. There was a huge storm, made all the more terrifying because Bodie is in the middle of nowhere.Half an hour later and the sky was lovely and blue again......reminded me of weather in the U.K :D

No, it can't be that long ago! [In reply to] Can't Post

Some memories make an impression, and this was one of them. I remember I was in a car with some friends. A radio station was going to play the whole album for the first time at a specific time. I can remember when the very first notes of "Where the Streets Have No Name" started playing. We sat there in the parking lot, listening eagerly.

I still play that album [In reply to] Can't Post

My personal favorite is "Running to Stand Still". If there is a list of the 50 best albums of all time (and I'm sure that somewhere there is), The Joshua Tree should be on it.

I have often thought that Bono is the [In reply to] Can't Post

closest thing that we have to an Aragorn in this real world. I have an" I want U2's Bono for President" on the back of my SUV along with some other U2 stickers. They have been my favorite band since I first heard Sunday Bloody Sunday some time back in the early 80's. My favorite song is Who's gonna ride your wild horses? mostly because in life I usually stand out from the crowds and refuse to go over the falls with the rest of the mainstream, and wonder if I will ever be understood. I have always been haunted by how a fair amount of U2's lyrics can be so intimately intertwined with the secrets of my soul. How could someone so far away whom I have never met know how intimately I feel. I think that connection is the reason why artists(art, film, music etc.) get paid so well when our teachers who care for our children are at the lower end of the pay scale yet their work is what is really most precious to our lives.

The repetition, the doubling and the long strands of interconnected narrative all mean something. They say that life is a series of cycles, and that we will likely meet the same kinds of archetypal guardians, opponents and allies at various stages along the way. But the nature of the conflicts changes as you age and grow over the span of an epic. Reading 'The Lord of the Rings' in my 20s, I was inspired by its idealism, but also terrified by its vision of middle life and old age as a patient, plodding struggle against the mundane grinding of evil. Seeing the movie meant something else to me from my current perspective, around the corner of age fifty, reminding me that the raw intensity of youthful dreams still has purity and power. At the same time, I felt the death of comrades in the movie keenly, for comrades have started to fall around me, and I looked to the story for the courage to continue the struggle without them.~As the legend says, 'One Ring to rule them all and in the darkness bind them.' We were certainly bound in the darkness, me and that afternoon's audience for the first chapter of 'The Lord of the Rings,' fellow travelers on a long journey together, seeking meaning for our shadowed world in the mirror of a myth, just as humans have always done.~Christopher Vogler

Anyone see Bono's NACCP speech??? [In reply to] Can't Post

Speaking before a wildly enthused mostly african-american audience, he gave a moving speech. It's probably on Google vid or some such site. Basically, he told the crowd that God is in every ghetto home, in every cardboard box a homeless person sleeps in, in every HIV infected inner city mom and her child, in Africa where people, and a whole continent, are dying off steadily. He got an amazing standing ovation from the crowd when he was finished. I think he was a winner of an award for his numerous charity contributions and activism. Inspiring stuff.

I saw it! [In reply to] Can't Post

It's on YouTube and it'a worth watching. The Red Campaign may not have generated as much money as Bono would have hoped but even a little helps Africans in need.He is so inspiring with his fight against poverty and his NACCP award was well deserved. His sppech was certainly rousing!! For a little man he has a big voiceHeart
