Finally, in LOTR, am I the only person who wondered at the plot lameness of introducing an unbeatable army of the dead (they are already dead!) to bring one of the long, tedious, and irrelevant battle to an obvious conclusion and then shuffle them off stage right JUST BEFORE THE ONLY BATTLE THAT ACTUALLY MIGHT HAVE MATTERED AND THE GOOD GUYS HAD NO WAY OF WINNING???? Yes, I understand the pathos at the end was created by the heroic last stand of the good guys and this would have been lost with an invincible army, but once you introduce an invincible army you can't un-introduce them. They are out there between the pages, making the rest of the damn book pointless. I suppose Tolkien needed some whiz bang way to win the first battle and was too busy conjugating elfin verbs to bother noticing.
