Favorite facepalm moments from both LOTR and TH

For fun. LOTR: Theoden's instant magic beard trim. The transforming eyes and complexion I could buy. But a haircut? Come on now. TH: Thorin balancing on Smaug's mouth. Boy, I didn't see that one coming. Not in a million trillion years.

To me, most of the needless references to LOTR in TH were facepalm worthy, especially Thranduil's Strider name-dropping.

LotR: Theoden being all shippy about Eowyn and Aragorn in the beginning of RotK XD Like chill, Aragorn's not even interested. Also the REALLY awkward slow mo reunion of the Fellowship. Hobbit: If there's any deaths in the series I'd facepalm it's not Fili's, but Kili's slow mo, drenced in forced romance death. But anything Alfrid too.

DOS: The Wheelbarrow that totally would have melted Thorin's face off. BOTFA: Legolas doing anything in Ravenhill. If ever there was a time he should have been in the background, that third act was it. Instead he was saving Thorin, saving Tauriel, fighting on a collapsing tower, running across falling bricks... oy vey. LOTR: Denethor running half a mile on fire, only to plummet to his death. Saruman cut from ROTK TE.

But the trouble with "facepalming", it seems to me, is that it doesn't seem awfully appropriate when applied to situations other than schoolboy errors by someone who is in much better standing. I'm not sure it fits very well for me when looking at very substantial achievements by folks such as us who haven't acheived anything similar. It sets up a bit of an odd narrative for my personal taste.

The big surprise to me in BOTFA is Legolas's unorthodox steering abilities. First, using a dagger embedded in the brain of a Troll and then tugging on the legs of a bat to steer it away from the colony and up towards Ravenhill. That's impressive.

1. Skateboarding in TTT. 2. Singlehandedly allegedly bringing down Oliphaunt in RotK. 3. Jumping on heads of people in barrel scene in DoS. 4. The whole of his sequence on Ravenshill was absolutely cringeworthy, in last Hobbit film. However, honourable mentions must go to: a. Forced cross-references to LotR in the Hobbit. b. Anything from Turiel 'romance', including 'what's it got in its trousers' episode. c. Gross-outs particularly in DoS and BofTA, and EE of AUJ.

Like settle down Gandalf! The Dwarves are just a little rowdy. No need to go there. Absolutely. "Do not take me for some conjuror of cheap tricks" but his use of the trick at dinner cheapened it now when I view it in Fellowship. D'oh.

LotR: Arwen "If you want him, come and claim him." and the awkward rotk reunion was hard to sit through. Hobbit: Far too many to mention. My face was in my palm so often, I had to watch the movies through a Mr. Spock "live long and prosper" salute.

The only thing I really objected to - the soapy green army turning up made everyone else's efforts seem a bit pointless. In the book, they are only effective in scaring the corsairs off their ships, which was all they were needed for - Aragorn freeing the galley slaves and raising an army from the coast would have been a nice addition to the film and only taken a couple of minutes extra filming.
in LOTR:The army of the Dead=the worst and most anticlimactic sequence i have seen in the Middle Earth series. "Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear."

as more of a clean up in a battle that had basically already been won. Like Scrubbing Bubbles™. I definitely think Jackson was taking a page from his own book with a Frighteners approach to the dead.
