Balrog wins. The Balrogs were some of Morgoth's most trusted minions, and were imbued directly with a part of Morgoth's power. Also, most of them were at one time Maiar. Dragons may rival them in sheer physical strength (though even this is debatable), but they have none of a balrog's metaphysical abilities.
Glaurung, first of Morgoth's dragons, was slain by a man. It took a Maiar of equal strength, with the advantage of a Ring of Power, to take down a Balrog.

Well, the book Balrog is only 10 feet tall. And though their powers may be great, Dragons of Morgoth are still a power to be reckoned with, and it all depends on circumstance whether or not one could win.

He could totally beat up the Balrog.
Has anyone ever wondered what would have happened if Smaug had ate Bilbo, and therefore the ring? It would be interesting to see Sauron send orcs to go diving for the Ring.

Because Smaug doesn't die if you shove him in a lake. The Balrog is extinguished. And fire is (as far as I know) the Balrog's only real weapon, and I'm sure fire wouldn't seriously damage a dragon. Smaug has claws and teeth to beat up the Balrog.
...Or maybe I just like dragons better.

Here is what Padster said in a different battle, quote: "they were without question Maiar, and they killed just about everything that fought. There were only 7 Balrogs, and their power increased in the mind of Mr T as time passed showing the importance he placed in them as servants of Morgoth". They were Maiar, and were thus magical, and were very powerful. And if they were 25 foot tall movie balrogs, EVEN MORE POWERFUL.

Nor do Balrogs. Where did you get the impression that they did?
Indeed the Balrog that Gandalf fought seemed no worse for wear having his fire put out. Indeed he was still very much a fearsome foe, as Gandalf explains:
"Yet it has a bottom, beyond light and knowledge," said Gandalf. "Thither I came at last, to the uttermost foundations of stone. He was with me still. His fire was quenched, but now he was a thing of slime, stronger than a strangling snake...”
The Balrog is not reduced by his dunking. It merely changes it’s tactics. And anyone out there who is clinging to the illusion that Balrog’s are purely things of shadow and fire, they aren’t. Although it DOES seem that fire was the Balrog's favoured defensive and offensive mechanism, which is why it burst into new flame when it and Gandalf got to the top of the mountain.
Mr T is being metaphorical about the shadow and fire thing. And merely, I believe, showing the company’s inability to clearly understand WHAT the Balrog was.
However, that they were PHYSICAL beings should not be in doubt. They, like Morgoth, gave themselves physical form, to which they were forever after wedded in order to gain more control over the substance or Arda and their own being.

When based on facts, it would pretty much be an eternity long battle. But when it comes to, if you have a favorite... well lets just say some people would definitely see a different outcome.
Me? I'm rootin for the Balrog. I mean I love Dragons and all, but the movie Balrog... it.... it was just completely awesome...
