**Geeky Observation List for BofFA - Give me your Observations! :)
|
Can't Post
|
|
Now that TBotFA is finally a theatres, it's time to go nuts with the Geeky Observations List! I've seen it 3 times so far and have been scribbling notes in the dark. I've included most of them below. Please forgive if others have already stated them. I'm going to be getting caught up with all of the entries submitted so far over the weekend and will be putting all of the Observations into one list; but I wanted to get this started. I also went to a Hobbit Marathon of all 3 films, so I'll be updating those lists, too. Please remember, I do not include negative, nitpicky, or otherwise items. These films are a work of great effort and talent, so I only use positive entries... the geekier the better. Check out the link in my footer to see previous lists for LotR and TH (so far). Even after this post has dropped off the page, I'll be checking it. So keep on giving those items you've seen in trailers, pictures or advertisements. If it's an authentic image from the film, it's okay. When the films hit theatres, I'll put in a new post for observations. If you want to be merciful, please use proper grammar and punctuation that I can just cut and paste. It saves on editing time, and I can leave your observations the way you entered them. :) THANKS LOTS! The Battle of the Five Armies Geeky Observations Fire and Water -
Bard never makes it to the Wind Lance. -
The Dwarves of Erebor can hear the town's bell and see the attack. -
While the Dwarves and Bilbo watch Smaug's attack, Balin and Bilbo notice Thorin is looking back at the main gate of Erebor. -
The Master's barge rams into Tauriel's boat. -
A flock of Ravens race to the Mountain after Smaug's demise. Shores of the Long Lake -
There are many boats of survivors in the water making their way to the shore. -
Legolas is addressed as Lord Legolas by Tauriel and others. -
As the Dwarves leave for the mountain, Bofur is using a shovel as a paddle. -
Bilbo is slightly affected by the Dragon-sickness as he tries to stop Fili, Kili, Bofur and Oin from going inside. -
Bilbo's nose twitches as he remembers what Smaug said about the Arkenstone driving Thorin mad. Guardians of the Three -
A weakened Gandalf chants breathlessly as Radagast, far away, is also chanting. -
Every time "The Necromancer" encounters a Wizard, he gets stronger. He begins to form when Radagast is there in AUJ, then grows in power when fighting with Gandalf in DoS. In BotFA, Gandalf is nearly spent and the Nazgul and the Necromancer are stronger. -
Galadriel's power shows as she saves Gandalf from the Orc and carries Gandalf in her arms. -
Gandalf is wearing Narya on his left hand, middle finger when Galadriel was rescuing him!!! *twitch* -
Elrond is in full battle armour and Saruman has brought his staff. -
At one moment, Galadriel is completely spent, and the next moment she's in full "beautiful and terrible" mode shown at the Mirror of Galadriel with Frodo years later. -
Galadriel holds up the phial of Galadriel as she banishes Sauron and the Nazgul into the Void. -
Elrond is amazed at Galadriel's power. -
Gandalf begins to regain his strength as soon as Radagast carries Gandalf to safety away from the Fortress. -
Radagast's Rhosgobel Rabbits are exhausted from racing from ? to Dol Guldur then back to his home. One has flopped over onto his back. The Ruins of Dale -
Gandalf arrives at Dale sporting a new staff and hat. A Thief in the Night -
When Balin asks Thorin if he doubts anyone's loyalty, Bilbo cannot look Thorin in the eye. -
Balin weeps for Thorin's fall from Dragon-sickness. -
Thorin smiles at Bilbo and his hope to grow an acorn from Beorn's garden at Bag End. It's one of the few times Thorin thinks of something other than the Arkenstone. He's happy at the thought of Bilbo at home in Bag End. -
As Bard approaches the gate to talk peace, Thorin sends a Raven off on an errand. -
How did Thorin know Bard was the Dragon-slayer? Did that same Raven tell him? -
Each column leading from the armory has a standing set of armour against it. -
The Dwarves are happy to see Bilbo try on his Mithril-vest (shirt). -
Thorin begins to sound like Smaug as his lust and paranoia grow. -
Thranduil asks if Bilbo stole food from him and stole the keys of the Dwarves cells. Bilbo looks down embarrassed and guiltily slurs, "Yes." -
Bilbo places the covered Arkenstone onto a map of the Mountain. -
Gandalf 's staff is resting against the wall behind Bilbo as he speaks with Thranduil and Bard. -
CAMEO: Dan Hennah has to stop as Alfrid cuts in front of him stomping off after Gandalf tells him to keep an eye on Bilbo. The Clouds Burst -
Thranduil cannot speak about his dead wife... not even to Legolas. -
Bard has changed into a long, maroon coat. -
As Thorin threatens to throw Bilbo over the ramparts, Gandalf calls out to him not to damage his Burglar. -
The Dwarves block Thorin from hurting Bilbo as Bofur rushes the Hobbit off to escape. -
The Raven returns and talks to Thorin as an upset Balin looks on. -
The Iron Hills Dwarves' shields match up to become a wall -
Bilbo asks Gandalf a very Tookish question when he wonders if they're in a safe place to stand... in the middle of the battle. -
Dain has boar-tusks woven into his beard. -
A troll breaches the wall by running into it head-long... knocking it out. -
A townie runs past Bard and his fighters proclaiming that Stone Street has fallen! -
CAMEO: Billy Jackson as one of the townsfolk standing ready to march with Bard in Dale. He's very tall now (as seen at Walk of Fame), and he's wearing a maroon-ish stocking cap with a beige-ish pattern at Bard's left shoulder as he faces the camera... er... town. He's in there for quite a bit. I think it's just before the "Stone Street is lost" declaration! -
Dwalin challenges Thorin who accuses one of the Dwarves of being false. -
Thorin walks on the golden floor created during their battle with Smaug, and he sees himself consumed by the gold. -
Thorin returns to the Company sans armour and as himself again. -
Bombur sounds the signal horn of Erebor... reminiscent of Helm's Deep. -
A giant golden bell knocks out the blocked entrance to the Dwarven Realm. -
The woman who saw the Dwarves as they secretly come to Lake-town is now a heroine as she intercedes in the Battle of Dale and calls the women to fight as well. -
Gandalf calls out to Legolas when he arrives, calling him "Legolas Greenleaf" -
Tauriel is not the only Elvish female warrior. -
As Bilbo runs through the fighting wearing the Ring, the Elves are glowing white. Ravenhill -
Azog works a system of wing-shaped signals to direct the army. -
There a long signal horn with a monstrous mouth –shaped opening. -
Bilbo joins in the battle, throwing rocks at the charging orcs. -
As Thorin stands alone fighting a hoard of orcs, Legolas begins to shoot them from a sniper's position atop a tower. -
Legolas saves Thorin again by throwing Orcrist at the orc about to kill the King, but now the Elf lost one of his weapons against Bolg. -
As the orc falls over the cliff, Thorin grabs the hilt of Orcrist and pulls it out To the Death -
Thorin uses his head as he fights simply. He steps off the ice and lets the floating slab tip and slip Azog into the icy water. -
As Azog drives his sword-arm toward Thorin's chest, the only thing stopping it is Orcrist blocking it. But Thorin suddenly draws Orcrist free, allowing Azog to stab him, but then Thorin stabs Azog with Orcrist. Courage and Wisdom -
From the book, Thorin begs Bilbo's forgiveness for his words at the rampart and for putting Bilbo in peril. -
Legolas tells Thranduil he will not return. Thranduil tells him to seek out the Dúnedain and one called Strider. -
Gandalf sits on the steps next to a shock-struck and mournful Bilbo. -
Bilbo's nose twitches. -
Gandalf cleans and picks at his pipe, not saying a word, until Bilbo takes note of him, and the friends smile at one another. The Return Journey -
As Bilbo and Gandalf ride away, it looks like there's a small chest behind Bilbo's saddle -
When Bilbo and Gandalf part on the border of the Shire, Bilbo is carrying the helm found in his chest, a sword (not Sting that is sheathed on his left hip), a shield and the chest of treasure. -
Bilbo still carries his contract and Thrór's map. -
The Auctioneer's sign has the date "June 22" on the podium. The Last Goodbye -
The Credit Sketch of Bilbo is taken from the picture of Martin Freeman holding up his Lego character! -
Lawrence Makoare isn't credited as Bolg in BotFA. John Tui (from Battleship movie) is listed in the film credits... though IMDB has Lawrence as Bolg. CAMEOS TO WATCH FOR: - Some have spotted PJ (or his twin) in Dale - when Gandalf rides in, he goes right by him.
- Some have spotted PJ outside Bag End during the auction.
-
Watch for Lee Pace's parents. Their scenes were cut from the film, but they may appear in the townfolk crowds of Dale. His Mom is holding a stick with kitchen knives hanging from it, near a spot where Gandalf and Bilbo meet up. - Martin Freeman's children are 6 and 9 years old. P'raps they have a cameo?

I put this in the other thread earlier too, but: When Bilbo picks up Belladonna's portrait from the floor, it puts us in mind of the 'Took side' of Bilbo's family, which is what made him able to go on this adventure in the first place. It's fitting to have him remind us of her at the end of the story. Katie Jackson is in a boat in burning Lake Town. I hope there will be more from me post-next viewing!

Fire and Water: Smaug appears to be the one who gives Bard his famous name "Bard the Bowman" when he calls him "bow man" Also: when Thorin is on the golden floor an image of a dragon appears in the floor, moving through the gold.

Is it Bofur or Bomber? Could have sworn it is Bomber with the horn, but I've only seen it once so far.

The use of Bells and horns are big in this movie as well. We hear the alarm Bell in the Laketown tower and a Bell is used to break down the Erebor wall signalling the Company forth. Bombur blows the Erebor horn to signal the charge of the company similar to Gimli blowing the Horn of Helm Hammerhand at the Two Towers.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned that the Master of Lake-town's boat gets squashed by Smaug's body after Bard shoots the dragon with the Black Arrow.
