Some new pieces of info about the TDOS EE footage. Can't Post

From Empire Magazine's Nick de Semlyen:

If you're curious about the Desolation Of Smaug extended cut, the biggest change is the addition of Thorin's dad, Thrain.

Thrain basically becomes Gandalf's sidekick. He's in all the Dol Guldur scenes, and was clearly digitally removed from the theatrical cut.

They've also reinstated a scene explaining why the Master of Laketown attacks Bard, something that makes little sense in the theatrical cut.

Also new to the Smaug extended cut: Stephen Fry eats bollocks!

Could someone on twitter.... [In reply to] Can't Post

Please ask him if there's any flashbacks involving Thrain, perhaps added to the start of the film or during the DG sequences? I'm thinking namely him giving the map and key to Gandalf and him going missing after Azanulbizar. Unfortunately I don't have an account.

I though this comment interesting: "The new scenes are nice. There's a bit too much Arkenstone though.". I wonder if he's referring to the film in general, or if new scenes relating to the Arkenstone are added? Do Gandalf and Thrain discuss it I wonder?

So sad to hear what he had to say...

Concerning mirkwood: he retweeted saying "one new scene, involving the crossing of a river (which we've seen a chunk of already) So NO WHITE STAG, nothing?! FrownFrownFrown Mirkwood was what I wanted extended the most

Concerning Beorn: One new Scene. A new intro to him (he's chopping wood. Again only one scene Unsure

It's still possible the white stag is in and is a part of that scene.

We KNOW the Gandalf-Beorn scene is in... [In reply to] Can't Post

It was in the trailer, which was completed after the film was rated.

It just feels like something he would've mentioned. But maybe he has to be a bit vague for spoilers.

Yeah perhaps again the Beorn Gandalf exchange is part of the new introduction? [In reply to] Can't Post

But you're right it's definitely in as it was in the trailer.

There's definitely two scenes involving Beorn [In reply to] Can't Post

because Gandalf isn't wearing his hat during the new introduction.

And I'm quite confident about the Mirkwood sequence consisting of
more than just the enchanted stream.

Jed Brophy's recent interview reassures me.

Yeah and also those scenes described don't feel like they fit the "25 minute" mark [In reply to] Can't Post

So I'll try and remain optimistic for now.

Yeah [In reply to] Can't Post

I got the impression this chap isn't quite as familiar with the film as the rest of us - heck, he may only have seen it once, and think of how many films he must see working on Empire. This may also explain his Arkenstone comment. Perhaps there is little new material on the Arkenstone, and he just thinks there is because he forgot how prominent it was in the film in the first place?

He says its "about 20 minutes longer" [In reply to] Can't Post

So either: (1) he is approximating and is off considerably; (2) what we have been told is not true (which I don't believe to be case); or (3) he didn't actually see all of it (which doesn't make sense).

Surprised about the Thrain comments! [In reply to] Can't Post

Why would they have Thrain with Gandalf for most of the DG scenes then digitally remove him for the EE? There have been odd occasions when the EE scenes have been altered from the TC, but usually it's just additions. Wonder what the logic behind that is?

Patience, Avandel [In reply to] Can't Post

We shall soon find out.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that PJ is aware of how awesome that shot of arrow pulling Thorin and bewildered looking Bilbo really is, and thus, wouldn't be so cruel as to not reinstate it.

It does seem odd... [In reply to] Can't Post

Perhaps they wanted Gandalf to "go in alone" and thought it would raise the tension. I really can't think of many reasons why, especially not having seen the alternate version.

I would take this with a grain of salt [In reply to] Can't Post

I don't think he's as fanatical as us about the additions. He may have overlooked the White Stag. TORN reported that a piece of it was shown at Comic Con, I doubt they'd do that if it wasn't included.

Also [In reply to] Can't Post

When we say 'new scenes', he may think we literally mean new scenes, as in * on the menu (as opposed to **). It's possible the stag bit is an extension to an existing scene, ditto Beorn talking with Gandalf.

Very true [In reply to] Can't Post

Especially regarding the Gandalf Beorn scene since it's an extension of the scene where they hop aboard the ponies.

I'd like to think that, tho at the same time *cough* it seems that PJ finds cruelty amusing, e.g. "it's fun to tweak the fans". Shocked

And it's truly cruel IMO to not have that BADASS shot of the arrow-pulling Thorin with those FIERCE eyes, which ended up being used at a PR shot at the time anyway. It's particularly on my mind as I am putting in my EE order today, and knowing I would have that shot would make me feel extra warm and fuzzy about the money I will spend.Cool

Aaaaaaaagh!!!! Guess I just made my decision re spoil or don't spoil - oh yes PLZ spoil me rotten Wink
