I can't remember where, but I'm sure he comments about this cameo that he hadn't got around to doing one for DoS. Rather than have people say 'Oh, he's lost interest' or words to that effect, he reenacted carrot man as a visual joke that people who like the films would recognise instantly - then, because it's right at the start of the film, everyone could get on with the story.
I don't think I'm making that up - I'm sure he has said something along these lines.

I hated the trailers, they took me out of the movie before it even began. Its not like you're settled into the reality of the world from the second that you see Bree is raining again.
I liked that there were two cameos right at the start, it got them out of the way so that I didn't get distracted half way through by the director's face.

It must be on one of the appendices, or maybe in an interview somewhere.
For myself, I liked the pirate cameo the best, although I didn't recognize him until later, after I'd read about it. Once I knew it was him, I found the whole pirate outfit pretty fun and still get a kick out of it. Who knows, maybe in the BOTFA we'll get to see PJ do another dramatic death scene - run over by Bard's downhill wagon? accidentally squashed by a fully armored Bombur leaping out of the front gate of Erebor? trampled by an Iron Hills mountain goat, with nothing left but a little hoof print in the center of his forehead? Who knows! And the excitement continues to build...

Yes, for me it is like that, precisely, I dive into that Middle-earth world immediately and eagerly and totally, so I did get disturbed by the one cameo that was obvious even for me : the one of PJ as the Carrot Man of Bree!!!
Funny indeed, hilarious even, no doubt, but it did take me out of the film at once. Not for long, though, luckily: the film pulled me right back in afterwards. But I had been disturbed, I have to admit it, and for a few seconds I resented it.
The other cameos have never disturbed me because I am so much into the story that at first I simply don't notice the cameos - particularly when they aren't of PJ but of various actors that as a French person I don't even know, let alone recognize in such a brief thing as a cameo...!!! As for the cameos of PJ in LOTR and AUJ, I noticed them only long afterwards, and usually because I learned about them through the Supplements or whatever... Then only I noticed!...!
This one was somehow an amusing cameo of Bree itself too: Bree, again under the rain!!! I loved that...

In my opinion, the good camoes are not the ones I "want to get out of the way", but the ones you may not notice of how subtle they are in the first place. Why would you want your cameo to be so abruptly noticeable?

The cameo is only a few seconds in to the film and those seconds also include a text overlay highlighting that this indeed a film. Nothing has happened prior to the cameo so I'm struggling to imagine what could be lost.
It seems rather like opening the door for the cab to the airport, then popping back in to pick up your toothbrush and saying that this took you out of your holiday. If it did, then fair enough but it's not something that would chime with me.

And for me it has the satisfying feeling of what needs to be at movies in theaters, IMO, for me. Favorite rows at favorite theater with no-one's head in the way? Check. Biggee drink w. lots of ice and extra straw in case I drop the first one in the dark? Check.
Lots of trailers? Check. Familiar MGM or other studio logo? Check. Peter Jackson *grins* in a Tolkien-based film? *Sigh of contentment*.
Now show me Thorin    .

I get what you mean, but I don't think PJ intended it to be subtle anyway. More like a really obvious inside joke for fans.
It did take me out of the film, but it did also make me chuckle, and I quickly forgot about it in a couple of seconds. So that's probably a win, in my book at least.

I saw him and was like "haha! It's PJ!" and then like 4 seconds later i forgot about him and got sucked right into the movie again!
I wanna see a scene where we see Sauron walking the steps INSIDE of Bara-Dur and taking his seat upon his dark throne and summoning the eye, looking into the camera and then BAM! THE END.
-My thoughts on the best ending scene/post credit scene on TABA.

It works, but I agree that it wasn't very subtle. I think I would have prefered it to be more subtle, but when I first saw it I loved it so it totally works
