TH:DOS SEE DVD - First Digipak Foldout Picture!
|
Can't Post
|
|
Here is the first image of the Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug SEE - digipak in its unfolded form! The outer cover is the version from UK (or Spain, Russia, Japan, Australia et al) bearing a great likeness to the old LOTR SEE boxes. The US/German/French version will most probably have the same inner digipak (as with AUJ:SEE), though having a different outer cover. Still no booklet - this will be fixed though (see my signature for details).
Source: Amazon.jp (which also contains a set of postcards).

Far as the cover artwork goes, if they're doing the same with this as they did with AUJ, the picture on the front of the US version will also appear on one end of the UK-and-others fold-out case (On the side you see when it's folded). Then there'll be another picture at the other end of the 'closed' side.

...they seem to have solved the tray placement better this time. Last time was rather silly: 1 - 2 - 2 (resulting in the two parts of the movie and two parts of the Appendices being split between different trays). This time it's 2 - 2 - 1 - a much better solution!

Is the fold-out edition only available in DVD 5-disc package? I know I have a Blu-ray EE that is nowhere near as nice!

Which is why I predict the DVD will still do very good business. That's the one thin I hate about blu-ray; the fact that you have the hideous Sony blue plastic cases, not sure why no-one does card fold-out cases anymore!

I might just have to buy the DVD case and replace the film discs with my Blu-rays.

Why on earth wouldn't they try to promote the new format with better packaging? Oh, the mysterious world of visual media sales!!!

...AUJ had 2-2-1 solution on pictures as well. So DOS EE can easily end up like An Unexpected journey. *oversized picture removed*

...the extreme high quality of Blu-ray, the packaging just starts to matter less and less. I love more elaborate DVD-style packaging as much as anyone else (HBO still does gorgeous packaging, even for Blu-ray), but the truth is it's just not high on my list of priorities for home video releases anymore. Not to mention, if you're a collector like me, you just start to run out of room on your shelf with bigger packaging. The more streamlined Blu-ray cases save a lot more space. I've never been fond of the blue color of the cases, though. I'm glad the EEs go with black - it looks so much better.
"The danger with any movie that does as well as this one does is that the amount of money it's making and the number of awards that it's got becomes almost more important than the movie itself in people's minds. I look at that as, in a sense, being very much like the Ring, and its effect on people. You know, you can kind of forget what we were doing, if you get too wrapped up in that." - Viggo Mortensen

I like the artwork, and look forward to seeing what the colour illustration will be like. Shame the box is so green (was expecting something greyer and more smoke-like). Still, you can't have everything (though you can try).

Is this how it looked for the AUJ:SEE as well? So Australia is the only English country that gets a digipak that looks like the original lotr EE dvd sets? If so are there any Aussies that could pm me about a possible transaction?

That UK presentation is gorgeous, and now makes me wish I'd gotten the UK An Unexpected Journey, because it obviously matches the LOTR SEE boxes a bit better - most importantly because the slide-out part of the slipcase is on the right side of the title/front, not the left! It still baffles me why the American version is backwards. This DOS set is odd, though, because it breaks form - this is the first of all six movies to have a slipcase that doesn't resemble a book! Now, that being said ... I feel like there's an argument to be made for dwarf-books feeling a bit heavy duty, and resembling their stoneworks. Ori's book in the Chamber of Mazarbul, for instance. Invariably, some day, I'll be getting the "Six-Film" Blu-Ray pack, so it's no huge stress that I'll be settling for the American standard DVD set, though, with the inlaid poster image. It's really quite nice, in spite of the nitpicks. The teal really sets off that fiery orange Smaug poster.

Does the UK/AUS etc DVD set not have that holographic image thing on the cover once you pull it out of the slipcase?
