http://youtu.be/8eRVhZWAPPA Skip to 1:15 This is a new interview with Evangeline Lily in which she describes shooting Tauriel's final scene (seems like it will be quite dramatic). Major information revealed, that Tauriel's final scene will be in the last 15 minutes of the film, read from that what you will.

If it is really in the last 15 minutes (if she even really knows that... and means it like that. Not only could she refer to her last 15 minutes in the film but what she says about physical exhaustion from stunts and battle scenes sounds like she might refer to a death on the battle-field) than I would think she might leave Middle-earth because of what she has to go through... not only the loss of Kili - but what it stands for if you do not just downgrade this to a love-triangle - the darkness that starts to settle over Middle-earth, that she saw coming or at least felt was coming but couldn't do anything against. If just a scene would occur I am sure it would be around the time in the movie of Thorin's funeral and Bilbo leaving Erebor - leaving over 10 minutes for the chest, the auction and the final scene. But she is only going to do ADR after CC... so she hasn't seen the final film yet. And the way she says "15 minutes" really does not sound to be taken as a definate number. She simply wanted to underline that it is towards the end of the movie, imho.

It was intended to go near the end. Which tells us that she's alive throughout most of the film.

Sounds like she will survive after all, and just be going to the Grey Havens in the end after the death of Kili and just the ever growing darkness in Middle-earth. Although it seems against Tauriel to want to leave Middle-earth with its fate in the balance, since so far her character has been wanting to defeat the evil. Hmmm.... Anyway, her character and story arc are what I'm most anticipating in BOTFA! Oh, and by the way, the acronym should be BOTFA, not BOFTA BOFTA would be Battle Of Five The Armies.

I'm just to calling it BOFA, but I thought I'd use the much preffered BOTFA for the thread. Obviously I've not had much practice at typing it out.

... this will be the tragic aspect about her. The character who pressured Legolas and Thranduil in fighting and facing Evil, might be so crushed after the Bot5A that she cannot cope anymore and has to leave Middle-earth. A broken soul and heart. This would also work greatly with Legolas in LotR - it will be quite ironic that the one who couldn't understand Tauriel's motivation at first - at all - will be the one to truely bring Dwarves and Elves back together and face the Evil Tauriel warned him about. God, they did a really good job with that character. And if the ending should play out like this, having her leaving Middle-earth, it will have really shaped up to be a major improvement!

This is really alarming news – it implies that they intend to carry on as they started with this character, and keep it important. Sorry, but I've had enough of Tolkien's characters being sidelined in favour of a made-up one.

... that for those disliking the character all this is bad news. Personally, however, I really hope they follow it through now what they have started. And given her role in DoS a short and quick end for her does not seem like good story-telling to me anymore, tbh.

That would be terrible from a storytelling point of view. They've made her a character and they need to stick by their plans for her. Besides I've seen no evidence that she's not well liked among most audience members anyway. So they'd have no reason to minimize her.
"The danger with any movie that does as well as this one does is that the amount of money it's making and the number of awards that it's got becomes almost more important than the movie itself in people's minds. I look at that as, in a sense, being very much like the Ring, and its effect on people. You know, you can kind of forget what we were doing, if you get too wrapped up in that." - Viggo Mortensen

... that Tauriel is not going to die. It became apparent (at least for me) during the feast of starlight-scene. The screenwriters are not building her character towards death, but when Orlando Bloom said in an interview that Legolas would not get his heart broken in the human sort of way, this became even more apparent. She is not going to die. However, I am curious about how her story will end since I like the character (and EL is just awesome). I quite like not knowing what is going to happen

characters are made up. And judging by The Hobbit book I read, none of those made up characters were very developed. So id say were pretty lucky to to have the far more developed ones that we do in the films, plus a little totally justified extra!

I think you must surely know what I was driving at, i.e. that they are NON-TOLKIEN characters. (Yes, I know, Legolas was in LotR, but that 'version' of Legolas was a very different character from the unpleasant one created for The Hobbit by the film-makers.) Many of Tolkien's characters, in both LotR and the Hobbit, were indeed not well developed. However, those of Gandalf, Bilbo, and the Hobbits in LotR were very well realised. In the LotR films, expansion of the Tolkien characters that were not well developed was welcome in many cases (e.g. Aragorn), but not all. Similarly, the expansion of characters such as Thorin and Balin in The Hobbit is excellent. However, this is different from creating entirely new (major) characters that Tolkien never intended for his work, for reasons outlined before and by others apart from myself. In my opinion.
