According to the article Pippa is asked if Gandalf meets Thrain in Dol Guldur. She says it will be in the extended cut. Thrain is played by Sir Antony Sher.

Considering Thrain was actually airbrushed out of some shots. It'll be the first time we have a shot that exists in both versions and looks different. Although I think RotK they changed one shot from day to night?

Does Boyens confirm anything else? Can't wait to see the Thrain stuff. Sher is a terrific actor and I'm sure he'll knock it out of the park.

Actually in TTT, when Faramir is taking Sam & Frodo to Osgiliath, in the extended version you can see Minas Tirith really small in the background. In the theatrical version, they took it out because they thought people would be like "what's that?"

Anyone want to speculate on the EE length?

I *really* hope we get more this time, as feel in the first half of the film up until the barrels really does feel kind of rushed in it's edit. I think some padding will really help the storytelling and more time with Beorn and Mirkwood is a MUST! That whole part of the film just felt incomplete to me. I remember last year we had PJ's estimates of the extended cut right as the theatrical cut of AUJ was coming out, but this year, all quiet on that front. Of course they weren't accurate and when we found out we would only get 13 minutes we were of course very disappointed! But just to hear more details would be nice. Anyone care to speculate on the new runtime? I really want at least a good 30 minutes or so, but that may just be wishful thinking.

We can only hope. Though I really hope the ending isn't drawn out any longer as it already feels too long in my opinion. I'm of course speaking of the showdown between Smaug and the Dwarves, the actual initial conversation with Smaug and Bilbo is riveting!

Anyway PJ never really alters much the climax of the films in the EE, with the exception of the extended denouement in "The Two Towers." I feel like he loves putting all that stuff up front and it is usually action based so expensive and harder to part with.

PJ said they added MinasTirith to the background of shots in TTT EE, because New line said they'd confused it with Helms deep in the theatrical. So it wouldn't be the first time something changed.

Is what I was talking about. I also hope they removed the title on screen for Bree at the start of DOS, they've never had a location card on screen (as far as I remember) so there's no point having one for Bree.

I Found it unnecessary; but there is precedent for it in AUJ with the caption for "The Shire...60 years earlier" when the story starts proper, and in the Theatrical cut of FOTR where it says "The Shire...60 years later," But that was gutted, so here's hoping the same for DOS's Bree card!

But you're right, so this is the third time. But probably the biggest example, a whole character existing where he didn't before is quite an adjustment

Thrain is in AUJ and is a mentioned character in DOS. Also, remember the Mouth of Sauron. But I get what you're saying.

She answers some questions about DOS for the empire review of the DOS DVD release. It just so happens that in one answer she mentions that Thrain will be in the EE.

We know they shot it but I just can't see Peter re-inserting Thrain now, after the whole switcharound of Azog and Bolg. I think they originally had Thrain there so as to give Gandalf something to do, someone to fight. Meeting Thrain now has no consequence. Though I hope I am wrong and that we will also see the Palantir (unless they are saving it for TABA).

May they will show how he came to DG and being tortured there. But not as Gandalf visits the fortress.

Azog took Bolg's role in Dol Guldur as we saw at Weta Digital's visual effects video. So Thrain can be insterted very easily into Dos before meeting with Azog. Gandalf may defeat him and may make a last talk and Thrain may die as a good one. Flashback as a 2nd scene where Gandalf meets him and took the key the map would complete Thrain's history in Hobbit series. That is my wish.

I seem to recall PB saying in a previous interview last year (soon after AUJ came out, I think) that how Gandalf gets the map/key will be different to how it is in the book. Therefore, whatever she says in this latest interview may not be referring to a reworking of the DG scenes we have already got. I think maybe she is meaning that we will get a flashback during the Bree prologue where Gandalf recalls how he went looking for Thrain, and found him...possibly this will be relocated to Moria??
