Thanks for sharing. It really shows how much goes into it. Plus it shows how good the CGI is to not even be able to tell that some of it is entirely digital.

I wish they were more generous with revealing their tricks. I could sit through a breakdown of every shot in the movie and not be the slightest bit bored. While I do regret the fact this trilogy has "extensive entirely digital sequences," it does not fail to impress me that they're able to get every shot, no matter how different, to a level of quality that is exceptional.

I think the saving grace of the films is that they are beautifully and honestly written and have well rounded characters, even the ones not in the book! It really elevates them and makes them quite re-watchable. It's the problem Star Wars had, it's prequels had so-so scripts and the direction was kinda bland, making for boring, un-involving scenes. They coulda-shoulda-but didn't use more practical sets. Which is a shame but doesn't kill the mood of the films. For me, the fully CGI shots that bother me the most are the OOT action. And some of the inexplicable uses of it, (Bilbo at the elven gate outside Mirkwood, look for this shot! It's so bizarre)

Because it doesn't look like a video game. No video game I've ever played anyway.

...whether the people who make that statement have ever actually played a video game.
"The danger with any movie that does as well as this one does is that the amount of money it's making and the number of awards that it's got becomes almost more important than the movie itself in people's minds. I look at that as, in a sense, being very much like the Ring, and its effect on people. You know, you can kind of forget what we were doing, if you get too wrapped up in that." - Viggo Mortensen

including me and I play lots of games. It's not even just all the CGI it's the fact that characters fall hundreds of feet and do not die.

I find that hard to believe. That's not a quarter of the film is CGI though, maybe it's just there's lots of shorter completely CGI shots.

And what's your definition of lots of people? I mean I've seen a fair share. But I know of a lot more people don't think it looks like a video game than those that think it does. I personally don't see how it looks like a video game.

Not a quarter of the film is completely digital but one quarter of the shots. There's a big difference.

I don't think either of us knows exactly how many people think it looks like a game or how many don't so to state that a lot more people don't is probably not accurate.

who watched either film and felt like there was even a slight chance that it could have been pulled from the realm of reality - whereas with LOTR it was filmed and scripted in such a way that many people made comparisons to historic epics and this time around comparisons are often made to video games. The movies are heavy in CGI and usually (not occasionally as with LOTR) completely over the top - hence the video game analogy.

At around 4:08. It's interesting to see a glimpse of the old Bolg here, and imagine how the film was originally meant to play out doncha think?

That that's a discarded Azog design. I wonder whether Azog was always going to be at Dol Guldur or if this was Bolg or what. It's so confusing

Azog can be seen in all the DOS trailers ambushing the Woodland Realms. Keep in mind the movie was suppose to end at the end of the Forest River (had it been kept into 2 parts). Bolg was suppose to be a jailer and torturer in Dol Guldur. Doesn't surprise me if Peter made a last minute switch again when editing. "Guys here me out, what if... what if Azog becomes the Necromencer's chief orc who runs Dol Guldur?' 'But Peter, we are only a few months away from the Premiere... and what about Bolg?' 'Well... I mean, it is only a suggestion' <scans the room> 'Alright Peter, we will get to work right away'. <YES men rush out of the room >

"Thang Berry Buch", Annatar! Great to see an Official VFX reel from WETA! Pausing it Over & Over again is a REAL Lesson to Learn...so exciting to know much of the details we have not heard about before. 18 Million coins moving, a Pile of GOLD...the size of the Country of Monaco? 95 Hours for JUST the Barrel Sequence edited down to 7 Minutes? THOSE NUMBERS are STAGGERING! (A year to work on jus' THAT?) Smaug's Size compared to Larger than two Jumbo Jets? Lets back up a bit..(The premise) 1. The Smallest Humanoid Hero (Under four feet tall) competing with the Largest Villian ever Written ABOUT? 2. Scale issues that needed Much MASSIVE Math to Make it look Real? Even is Some of the most Simple Shots. 3. Impossiby Huge sets like Thranduiel's Realm or Erebor? with layers of Atmosphere that seemed likely given that they are Underground? 4. Using the Actors for the Close-ups yet? SO MUCH in Most of the Fantasy Backgrounds are Delivered by another Division of PJ's many Companies? 5. Revolutionizing Cinema at 48 FPS (3D with Dolby Atmos TOO? That guided the sound around the Theater!) 6. NONE of the many World-Class Actors have Never done much of ANY this Kind of Work? Martin said it looked like NASA... NOT a Movie set. 7. JUST Gollum & Smaug have SET the Bar with ANY Big Movies.. . Filmmakers are copying PJ ALL the Time. 8. Lastly one of the Most Wonderful Directors ALIVE with Constant, Joyous Enthusaism that no one ever says a Bad WORD about? They all loved him & would give anything to be in another Film by him. PJ has been "Sprinting Ahead" of the Competition for YEARS! Sorry, but if you grew UP watching the Clunky animation in Jason & the Argonauts & "Italian-Made Hercules" Films with their Primitive Effects? like Bomby,..this experience has been worth every penny for someone who has waited for ALMOST 50 years to see... ........ Bomby's Favorite Book Brought to the Screen.!. This generation has it sooo Good.. So maybe it might be a Good idea to make a Little effort to Like it.

“All good stories deserve embellishment." Praise is subjective. And so is criticism. "I am afraid it is only too likely to be true what you say about the critics and the public. I am dreading the publication for it will be impossible not to mind what is said. I have exposed my heart to be shot at."

There is a couple things that look better/worse than others but this is a common problem with any film that uses CGI elements. Would have been cool to see more of Beorn and Bolg, hopefully they get individual movies like how Gollum, The Great Goblin and Azog got featurettes last year. As for people who think the movies look like video games please direct me to said games because they must look awesome!
