and in hopes of a Hobbit movie ... here is Smaug I painted this one in 2005, I wanted to try and capture the greed that consumes Smaug and capture it as almost a living thing in the glow of his hoard

I don't always like dragon art I've seen, because I have a clear image in my mind how they should appear, not in detail, maybe, but in the presence they exude. I like this Smaug. He's beautiful, as well as intimidating and intelligent. Angry, he'd be quite menacing, to say the least. WG

love the flowing shapes and glowing light, makes him almost ethereal. The curling tail and movement in the painting allow you eye to roam around and enjoy all the areas of the painting. I like how you've almost buried Smaug's wings under his enormous horde of treasure, very symbolic and apropos. Is that the Arkenstone in the bottom right between the wing and the tail that Smaug is looking at?

Even though it is Smaug your style gives me a warm feeling. Your lines are delicate and flowing and the colors are pleasing I think you could capture the feeling of Rivendell or Lothlorien very nicely if you ventured it. I think you could do an amazing visualization of Galadriel. Thank you for sharing your beautiful work.
"Tolkien, like Lewis, believed that, through story, the real world would become a more magical place, full of meaning. We see its patterns and colors in a fresh way. The recovery of a true view of the world applies both to individual things, like hills and stones, and to the cosmic - the depths of space and time itself. For in sub-creation, in Tolkien's view, there is a "survey" of space and time. Reality is captured on a miniature scale. Through stories like The Lord of the Rings, a renewed view of things is given, illuminating the homely, the spiritial, the physical, and the moral dimensions of the world." Tolkien and C.S. This particular image makes me almost feel sorry for the Dragon, who seems to be staring at his treasure in an almost childlike, or doglike, subserviant manner: "Must I guard you?" is the implication, here. Is this the intent? If so, very effective!

ok well not exactly.. but I certainly like to leave it open to interpretation and that is interesting.. just like you can feel sorry for Gollum at times, only Smaug is to grand for that kind of pity What I was trying to express was the greed/treasure becoming such a part of Smaug and his "beauty" (since he is a vain fellow) the gold that is a bit distant looks more tarnished and real (I hope) but that isn't what he sees.. its warm and alive to him ..like blood to a vampire :) or the ring to Gollum and speaking of the ring.. he looks so nervous perhaps because he hears someone but can't see them :) thanks so much for commenting!

Beautiful colours and lines - "stunning" is another word that comes to mind, partially because the colours are so dazling. Y.

And this one is so catchy, I'm adding it to my massive collection. It is really magnificent.
Dagonet, Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky, Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone, Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die, One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne In the Land of Mordor where the Shdows lie. One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

but I really like this Smaug. It is a good liking to this famous dragon. I could certainly see this Smaug in the new movie.
