THE HOBBIT MOVIE COMPOSER: Doug Adams' Hints Point To Howard Shore
|
Can't Post
|
|
Over at the Ongoing discussion at his blog, Doug was asked: Any comments on De Toro and the effect on the composer choice? To which he replied (in classic Doug fashion ): I was first passed word of this about a month ago. Shore is a huge Del Toro fan, and Del Toro is a huge Shore fan. It is a good time to be a Tolkien fan. Is that vaguely specific enough? ;) I for one am over-excited at the prospect of Shore returning to Middle-earth. And also, if this news reached Doug's ears a month ago, the "rumours" of a Del Toro directed Hobbit are probably going to be an official announcement pretty soon. Just my opinion here, but Doug usaully doesn't tease us with things that aren't in the offing

to the film as Jackson's fingerprint in how it looks and the actors chosen. It just HAS to be Howard Shore doing the music. *twitch* It's just gotta!

Now thats continuity! I couldn't imagine anyone else to do it - he's so tuned into this (bad pun, but true). Fingers crossed here.

I just found his entry on his main page which just says in large gold type,
A long time ago, in an underground realm, where there are no lies or pain, there lived... and then as a comment he just added a smile. I had to google the phrase to figure out what it meant. Although I knew it was a hint that developments were in the works I wasn't entirely sure it referred to the Hobbit until I got my google results. I came here immediately to post and found you've been awake longer. :-) I agree with you that Doug would not be posting something like this without real news going on behind the scenes. While we have a soundtrack thread up, I might point people to another comment he made. On Jan 21, he announced this:
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING HOWARD SHORE’S ENTIRE ACADEMY AWARD®-WINNING MUSICAL SCORE PERFORMED LIVE TO THE FILM MUNICH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA; PHILHARMONIE IM GASTEIG; MUNICH, GERMANY LUDWIG WICKI, CONDUCTOR WEDNESDAY, 26 MARCH 2008, 19.30 H THURSDAY, 27 MARCH 2008, 19.30 H (sorry, he did all caps and I don't want to retype it) and then said this:
As of the moment, I don't have any plans to attend this concert, but it looks phenomenal. (If plans change I'll obviously update.) I hear off-the-record rumblings that you may encounter a cast member or two at this one. Anyway, spread the word. This will no doubt be an amazing event! (bold added by me) I thought of giving people a heads up but I wasn't sure we had too members from Germany here.

Sounds great! If it comes about, Howard would be the first confirmation of someone coming back to do what they did so well before! Somehow this seems so right!! Thanks Earl and Magpie! Cheers

I didn't think about it that way. If it comes about, Howard would be the first confirmation of someone coming back to do what they did so well before! You said it Elven. Now you've gone and sent me all ballistic (in a good way). It's like, WOW, this is actually happening. I mean, after December, this really would be the next big piece of news wouldn't it? Declaring a director and a composer?

Isnt that an exciting thought Earl!! I reckon its in is hands from what you and Magpie are hinting at - but Im just putting up a 'What Say You' thread in Movies ... and quoting both you and Magpie about this ... I hope thats OK ... just to keep the news and rumours thats coming in some order ... so in another 3 years time we can find them ... LOL!! I hope some more news comes soon about this - regardless who directs! Howards contribution has been astounding to the last films! I support him all the way!

I saw that "opening line" too, but I usually check the Ongoing Discussion first, so I had Doug's hint from there running through my mind when I went and saw his smiley in the new topic. And like the impulsive-excited-geek that I am, I replied there without it hitting me that in fact had to do with Pan's Lanyrinth. And then I couldn't edit it Anyway, looks like more lyric work for you in the not-so-far-future and more fun for me checking out your site as well. (On that topic, I'll send you a mail soon as I get the time).

By all means. And if you think this thread should be moved over to Movie and/or merged with another, go ahead and ask an admin to do so. I usually just post news tidbits in Main since I feel bad about bumping off the discussions over in Movie

*backs away from the computer* I will not be doing anything with a Hobbit soundtrack. I've done what I set out to do. (or will be done at some point) The Hobbit will be someone else's project. One of the main driving forces with my website is my tendency towards compulsive/obsessive behavior. I can't stop until it's finished. But it takes a tremendous amount of attention and focus for me. I don't regret starting and I don't regret the drive to 'finish' it. But I need to move onto other things at some point. I'll look for you email. I'm probably going to upload my ROTK lyrics update today and I'll be adding a link to your site when I do that.

I truly believe that Howard Shore is one of the must-haves for "The Hobbit" films. IMO, and hopefully most of yours, the must-have list is as follows: Ian McKellen as Gandalf Hugo Weaving as Elrond Howard Shore composing WETA doing SFX Ngila Dixon doing costumes Richard Taylor leading the armor and weapons teams Fran Walsh and Phillipa Boyens writing Andy Serkis as Gollum John Howe and Alan Lee for conceptual design ........Just to name a few. And although he say's he won't do it, I'd love to see PJ back at the helm directing.

Its great to know Del Toro fancies the work of Mr Shore, he also like Angelo Badalementi and John Debney (Passion of the Christ). However, it wouldn't be all that bad if one of these guys were to take on the Hobbit, especially John Debney!

And i'm at least glad that Del Toro and Shore respect and like each other. :)

Last but not least.
