The following YouTube video confirms that Guillermo Del Toro will be directing 'The Hobbit' films. We hope to have additional confirmation within the next few hours - stay tuned!

and why someone in France has this information but no one in the US or New Zealand doesn't. Could their source be Del Toro himself? Maybe he's doing a little politicking?

It can't have been fabricated. It was indeed said (both in Spanish and in French) without any doubt that Del Toro would be directing The Hobbit.
Bayona says: "Today is a great day, because it's finally been announced what we all wanted, that Guillermo is going to direct The Hobbit." which is turn translated by the woman. Bayona continues: "The first great creative decision is that he is going to give me a cameo."

So there! 2011 and 2012? Different from 2010 and 2011 we had heard of!

It's awful. It was a shock to me to learn of this decision - now Del Toro is the director of The Hobbit films. I'm crying.

... so much for watching the production diaries.
I can't imagine this project being as fun as LOTR... unless Peter's on set every day, I doubt there will be the same camaraderie that there was on LOTR and it will no doubt show in the performances.
But... despite my HUGE reservations... I suppose I will get around to seeing it...

 IF he hasn't even read the books? This is horrible news! If we had some director who actually KNOWS the movies it would be better. I've not seen any of his movies but imean, from his initial interview from a month back, it didn't seem that he would know about The Hobbit at all and he was just looking for another project. This is a surprise to the whole world and me, as a hardcore fan, is not pleased at all. :(

I did read that he said he couldn't get through LotR, but I can relate because it took me many tries (I was 12 at the time, but no matter). Pan's Labyrinth was pretty awesome. Let's give him a chance.

Pan's Labryinth was a beautiful, enchanting film. Too Dark for what the Hobbit should be, but I am sure all the adequate adjustments in approach will be made.
Del Toro also doesn't seem to hate magical flame, which is good for Gandalf's dramatic intrusion upon the Goblin King's party.  As much as I loved most of what Peter did with LOTR, I would be angrier than any wet hornet if Gandalf's astounding moment in the mountain caverns, so precisely described by Tolkien, went from a flame to a fizzle, or from a conflagration to a smokers cough, just to suit Jackson's personal prefference.
He also seems, from what I saw in Pan's Labyrinth, to have a proper feel for sentiment. The death of Thorin shall move all. Now I wonder as to his sense of humour. . .
He has read the Hobbit. That is the main thing for doing that film properly. It may be better for him not trying to overweight with Rings sub-text. Now for the Bridge film, he is not yet shoed in anyway. Either way, I think his next major project needs to be sitting down and reading ALL of the books. Then reareading The Hobbit five times, chapter for chapter for chapter, and every line.
If he moves on to do the second film, he must be locked and bound in a room, under the stern tutelage of Saruma. . . Christopher Lee, in full Saruman raiment, as I have said before "Do you know why the Istari came into Middle-Earth. . . So Gandalf, you seek to lead Glorfindel, Galadriel, Elrond and the rest against Dol Guldur. . . and if your bid fails? What then will you do? If I overrule you, will you risk the more dangerous road?" LOL " You must Join with me Guillermo. . . It would be wise, my friend. . . I give you the chance of aiding me, willingly. . . do not choose the way of pain."
There are other directors I would have been interested to see involved. . . Wolfgang Petersen, Chris Columbus, Ron Howard, Ridely Scott. . . Henson has been dead since I was a boy, so that was never on the table . . . I wasn't eager for Rami, but when I heard he studies all source material with a passionate drive, I became more hopeful for him. . . but maybe Guillermo will do so well he makes me forget about all of these others. I hope so.

You need to rent the DVD of "Pan's Labyrinth", watch the film, listen to the Commentary, and THEN (most important of all) watch the hour-long, uncut Charlie Rose interview with Del Toro, Cuaron, and Inarritu from 2007. I have dubbed them "The Mexican Inklings." Just watching this round-table interview gave me shivers up my spine, and this was back during the summer. In fact, I am going to rent it tomorrow...hack, I'll have to BUY it now.
ANY reservations I had about Del Toro's ability to create the same on-set magic and cadamanderie died a swift and deserving death. NZ's "native son" might not be there every day, but I think Del Toro will be welcomed with open arms, much more so than an American director. He'll probably have the entire Mexican film industry show up in one wat or another to watch over the course of the shoot:).
This is the best thing about this: Del Toro's close relationships with the other directors, in every aspect, and they are such a FUN bunch, and literary giants of cinema. As a result of this interview, I have begun using the phrase "The New Mexican Cinema", a dynamic scene every bit as electric and vibrant as the Spielberg/Lucas/Scorcese/Coppola "Film Brat" culture of the '70's. He'll have their ideas, expertise, vision, and passion for film. And Del Toro is a really nice man. He's a lot like PJ in more ways than appearance (lol).
FYI, I was probably the biggest skeptic on TORN, I wanted Our Three to do everything. I still deep down do. But this is an arrangement that suits me well. PLEASE, don't give up on this yet!

Del Toro is a very engaging director, with cast and with fans. He'll be about as much fun, if not more so, than PJ, count on it.
And PJ has given this his blessing, so who are any of us to gainsay that? Like with LOTR, he's going to make a complete team, one that will work well together, and that includes cast, crew and director. It had to be someone PJ could work with, not just someone with the directing skills, but a true collaborator, and GDT has always struck me as such. He really is a fanboy at heart, anyone who saw any of the press on Hellboy knows that. There is a reason Ron Perlman did Hellboy and all that heavy make up, and it's the fact that they worked together so well in Chronos. Can you imagine someone like Perlman handling Thorin?????
