So Guillermo Del Toro is in talks to direct The Hobbit ... Can't Post

... I don't know what to feel. I'm just sad that for whatever reason, PJ won't direct. I mean, after all the wrangling and all, why did PJ commit to other projects if he really wanted to make The Hobbit? I supposed he of all people would know the status of the rights for these movies, being privy it all. Anyway, I keep asking myself, "So he finally settled for executive producer? I always thought PJ would find "some" way to direct The Hobbit. I was always afraid I'd remember him as good ol' PJ who passed the Hobbit on for Tintin". It's come true Frown

Of course, Del Toro is a pretty good director, and I'm excited about this whole collaboration with PJ and co. I'm just apprehensive with having another level of doubt and uncertainty as to how it will all play out in the end. Who knows, it might even be better than the "PJ-only" LOTR trilogy Tongue

Edit: Oops, I almost forgot. Read one of the (now-redundant) news stories here.

It will be interesting [In reply to] Can't Post

to see how this all plays out and who will be working with Peter Jackson for these two films. I don't think Jackson would have "settled" to produce if he was satisfied with his involvement with it. Typically, Executive Producers have a pretty standard role in films, but Jackson is anything BUT typical in his work... so I think we'll be pleasantly surprised to see he's all over The Hobbit and it's sequel. Trust Peter to make sure these films are done right and will look, feel and sound like LotR. I just can't believe he'd "settle" for anything other than perfection :)

We're in safe hands!

That we certainly are! Guillermo Del Toro is one of my favorite directors and is definitely one of the very few besides Jackson who could do justice to the story while bringing in some of his amazing style and unique imagination.

I hope you won't mind if I (mis)quote you, gramma:

"Trust Guillermo and Peter!"

Del Toro - could not get through LOTR [In reply to] Can't Post

I am still worried that a guy who cannot get through the LOTRs is thought capable of capturing that world on film, especially for the bridge film, that requires a lot of creative interpretation from LOTR resources. Hopefully, those aspects will come from PJ and Co. and the director just directs....

Neat [In reply to] Can't Post

Excellent news, if it has any weight...Pan's Labyrinth is a masterpiece (in my eyes, anyway) and del Toro is an smart, talented guy.

I can see him delivering a film that lines up nicely with what we've already seen, but isn't a mere imitation.

Musings... [In reply to] Can't Post

I had mused a few times with my sources about the possibility of Del Toro directing "The Hobbit" (the book he actually read) and PJ taking the helm for the bridge to LOTRs - but with the two movies being shot concurrently we can't imagine how this gets done! IF THEY CAN WORK TOGETHER SEAMLESSLY, maybe it is possible. Scheduling would be key. Each movie would have a different feel and GDT would have a little more freedom with "The Hobbit" - but there is no way he could do the bridge movie. None. I will be posting on this hypothesis on Marketsaw today. My sources say it is feasible - nothing that they have heard - but feasible.

For what it is worth, we still believe that PJ will direct both. Time will tell. But there is simply too much at stake here for gambling and anyone else would be just that - a gamble. Time is of the essence and with an investment of a total of over $300 million in budget, who do you think will ultimately direct it? Who has experience with shooting concurrent films? Who has the ear of all of his Middle-earth stars? Who has a track record of record breaking box offices and Oscar wins? Who has the damn vision from start to finish?? We all know the answer to that.

PJ and GDT are going through the public relations motions to capture more and more publicity and it is working. Heck they made me email my sources twice today (no word yet btw). So is it working? Yes. Are they going to announce GDT is going to solely direct "The Hobbit"(s)? No.

good good news if true [In reply to] Can't Post

I feel this is the best possible news regarding potential directors. Over the last few years I've grown to admire the skill and intelligence Mr. Del Toro brings to his projects. If you've ever listened to the audio commentary on films such as Pan's Labyrinth or Devil's Backbone you'd be astonished at the level of serious thought - both in the technical and storytelling sense - that Guillermo brings. I think he would internalize Tolkien and blend it with his own magic-realism to create a total masterpiece and treat for us fans.

It could work [In reply to] Can't Post

Out of all the directors on the list, I think he is the best suited for this job. I loves his previous works (except Hellboy), and think his style could work for the Hobbit films.

The only question bothering me (as of right now) is, who would be the director of photography? Would it still be Andrew Lesnie? Him and Pete are attached at the hip. Would he be working on one of Pete's other films or will he come back to Middle Earth.

Have you hugged your hobbit today?

As a fellow thinker.... [In reply to] Can't Post

I feel your ambivalence, Earl. You remember I was perhaps the one who went the most ballistic over the Announcement on Dec 17, with PJ confirmed not to direct. (So ballistic, it can now be safely revealed almost 6 weeks later, that I got a little "24-hr warning" from one of the Mods. a couple days after.)

I too am awaiting anxiously what this may bring. But Del Toro was my 2nd choice, and I do think that things have turned out the best they possibly could. I'm starting to think like Gramma on this, that Someone is looking out for this project as well as He looked out for LOTR!

So you and I can follow this project as fellow thinkers together, know you have an "ally" here. But trust me, we'll get through this! (((((((HUGS)))))))))))

If you don't mind, my friend. Sly

I''m too pooped to flying tackle hug at the mo, (and I;m still in the middle of my situation at home, see Orcbane's thread for details) but this director news has made my WEEK! Between this and Shore and Del Toro being huge fans of each other....

I think I feel a "twitch" coming on...mind if I infringe on your "Twitch Copyright" a mo? :)

Fear not! [In reply to] Can't Post

        Wink
PJ is great and he'll always be my hero for getting the trilogy to the big screen and in a pretty decent way. That said, I think we all need to embrace Del Toro as our next hero. Not only is he going to do a friggin' amazing job with this material but also let's not forget that only a few days ago we were all tortured by the thought of Sam LAMIE getting the gig. Do you think he would have found a way to have a 20 minute long scene with Aunt May in the Hobbit if he had his way? Ugh. He did a pretty poor job with Spiderman. Let's not trust anyone like that with our beloved Hobbit. PJ and Fran will both be in on this so it will be under their watchful eye too. My personal feeling on this is that not only should Del Toro direct the Hobbit but he should be allowed to go right on shooting a NEW TRILOGY. Think about it. By the time the second Hobbit movie is out, the PJ version will be well over 10 years old. It is great, but it has it's problems. Not going to get into all those details now but, damn, wouldn't it be cool if we got an even better version. 5 movies from the same awesome director. New cast. I know I'm in the minority in this so I guess I'll just be happy with the current news. It's gonna be a long 2 years!
