PJ confirms more Beorn scenes in the EE Can't Post

Swedish fans have been waiting for Mikael Persbrandt and Beorn for a long time now. And there’s not very much in this film, and I’d like to ask you, why was there just that short appearance, and also I’d like to know what more we’ll see of him in the next film.

PJ: His character does do more in the third film, in ways I won’t explain. But he does have more to do, and he does come back into the story. We almost set him up in this one, for things that are going to happen in the third film. Because what’s really great about that character - we kind of took from Tolkien and went a different way - is that we made him a fairly enigmatic figure. He’s not necessarily a good character or a bad character. He lives by his own rules; as he says in the movie, “I don’t like dwarves, but orcs I like even less.”
That’s how he chooses which side he’s going to be on. And there is going to be a little bit more of him in the extended cut of this film. We shot scenes with Mikael. But when we cut the film together, and looked at the length and things, we shaped it and structured it for the best way we thought it would work for the cinematic version.
So you’ve got a couple more things to look forward to: you’ve got a couple more scenes in the extended cut of this film, and some more of him, which I won’t be describing, in the third movie!

That is great news! [In reply to] Can't Post

I wonder what's in store for him in TABA (besides his apperance at Bot5A)? A Lego playset featuring Beorn at Dol Guldur was released this fall, perhaps that's a hint of things to come?

Now now Bill, you swore this was a battle between warriors, not a bunch of miss nancies, so warriors is what I brought

Yay! [In reply to] Can't Post

I wasn't quite sure what to expect from Beorn and Mikael Persbrandt, but I was very pleasantly surprised. I LOVE Beorn's voice. I have no idea what MP sounds like when he's not Beorn, but I thought his growly-bear, slow and lilting voice was quite like what Tolkien described, and perfect for the character.

I don't think PJ's characterization of Beorn as enigmatic is all that far off what Tolkien wrote, however. He's a bit mysterious in the book, too, and PJ's take on the character makes him that much more interesting (to me, at least!). Can't wait to see more of him, both in the DOS EE and in TABA.

Wow.. [In reply to] Can't Post

How do you get in contact with PJ? I didn't click that "denofgeek" link but.. wow.. Nice answer... Makes me wanna talk Sauron with him, why he went the way he did, what he thinks about Sauron in DOS etc etc.

I wanna see a scene where we see Sauron walking the steps INSIDE of Bara-Dur and taking his seat upon his dark throne and summoning the eye, looking into the camera and then BAM! THE END.

-My thoughts on the best ending scene/post credit scene on TABA.

I should think so, too. [In reply to] Can't Post

Would have preferred far more of him in DOS cinema edition – could have easily sacrificed the pointless Orc fight in Laketown for more of Beorn, for instance.

Yes, I read previously that they filmed a scene with Bilbo and Gandalf... [In reply to] Can't Post

in Beorn's garden before breakfast, and it featured a reworked version of Gandalf's story to introduce the Dwarves a few at a time. Hope that does make it back in. Smile

In the EE of AUJ we got a whole new Song from Bofur.. [In reply to] Can't Post

IN Our Book, the Dwarves sing @ Beorn's Lodge

"The wind on the withered heath,
but the forest stirred no leaf..."

Beautiful, mornful, sincere..
& one of Tolkien's BEST!

Maybe, this song turns Beorn into
a believer of their Quest?

That HUGE set,
jus' lit by
FireLight & Candles
would be quite effective...

AND if you read the words in YOUR Book?

You'll see why Bomby wants it there.

Difficult to keep smiling when you've been in hospital for nearly two weeks with 'severe pneumonia' and kidney failure (during the Christmas period).

HOWEVER, this did not happen before I managed to see DOS twice (was planning to go every week after that, but sometimes one's best-laid plans go awry).

They are improving, but these things take time after such a mishap! Wink

Incidentally, I had some bizarre Hobbit-related meanderings in my brain while I was in A&E being stabilised (hours of time). I thought everyone in the background was having long conversations about DoS!

Why do people [In reply to] Can't Post

In Reply To

Whilst not wishing to single you out by replying to your post but I have to reply to someones post!

Why do people keep making completely, well frankly illogical comments along these lines.

I.E "If they cut this, they could easily put this back in" generally in circumstances were it doesn't really work that way.

Sure there are perhaps legitimate concerns about the ending of DoS, maybe the ending has a bit too much Laketown battle or the battle between Smaug and the Dwarves is to long or OTT. (Note I'm not arguing in favour of one in particular.) Yes you could trim a bit of a action if its a bit flabby, but they aren't going to trim it for being flabby and then magically going to put more 'slow' material in its place - doubly so at a completely different point of the movie!

The Beorn material is in the first 15 minutes of the film and PJ made a conscious decision to get the first chunk of the movie on a roll and cut out the pauses. Whether it was a personal decision to differentiate it from road journey of AUJ or was a reaction to the negative reviews on AUJ slow start, they both lead to a similar outcome.
Cutting some action scenes at the very end of the movie isn't going to somehow change the decisions PJ made for the tone of the beginning of the movie.

It's more or exactly like the similar comments from some people about the Rivendell/Stone Giants last year.

The primary reason they cut the Rivendell footage (despite how good the Bilbo/ Elrond and Bilbo overheard Thorin/Thrain conversation were) is because they deemed it to be a big lull in the story just as it had got going - considering the flack AUJ got for the slow start, have a even longer Rivendell pit stop only about 25 minutes after getting out the Shire wouldn't have gone down well!

Had they cut the Stone Giants stuff down, I doubt you would have had any other material put back in, you would have just got a shorter movie!

It's also not too dissimilar to people that were still recently whinging about the AUJ:EE only being 13 minutes longer.
That because they already put most of what would have been EE material in the theatrical version when they moved 45mins+ of footage to create DoS!

On the whole out of all the cut material in DoS, the cutting of the Beorn material is, whilst regrettable, one of the more logical choices. The briefness of Mirkwood and skipping of Dale were a little more odd to me. However the Mirkwood one still ties into the explanation I gave above.

The Songs [In reply to] Can't Post

Yes Bomby, that's what I missed most in DoS. We got four wonderful tunes in An Unexpected Journey and none in the second chapter. I would be very happy to hear one or two songs in the extended cut.

Shocked Back in late October my dad (who's generally not in the best health anyway) was in the hospital for almost a week with severe pneumonia, and he's just now really getting back to where he can go places and do stuff like normal. And on top of pneumonia you also had kidney failure? You must have been feeling awful! I hope you continue to improve and feel better soon!HeartEvil

Very good points, DjU [In reply to] Can't Post

In an interview posted somewhere on this site not long ago, Philippa Boyens said something about PJ wanting DoS to be less of a road movie and to get to the objective - presumably Smaug - as quickly as possible. I suppose he didn't want DoS to so closely resemble AUJ in structure.

What went in the theatrical cut and what will be the EE were chosen by PJ for his own reasons as he sculpted his film into what he wanted it to be.

I agree that there was probably not enough good footage left to make the EE of AUJ any longer than it was.

I suspect that people who haven't read the book would think that adequate time was spent with Beorn and in Mirkwood anyway.

But I look forward to more of both in the EE.
