So, I'm reading the FotR again and came across a hilarious line about the second Hobbit film.

In chapter 1 of Book 2 of FotR, Many Meetings, Frodo is having a conversation with Gloin. Gloin is telling him what's been going on with the dwarves and brings up Dale. He speaks of building fountains, pools, halls, etc. And Frodo says the funniest line in the book, now after seeing DoS. He says: "How surprised Bilbo would have been to see all the changes in the Desolation of Smaug!" I got a huge chuckle out of this. It's almost as if it's somehow foretelling the changes made to the second movie of the Hobbit. This is not at all to be taken seriously, nor am I putting the changes of the film down in any way, as I am a huge fan of the film. I just found this incredibly hilarious!

Have an idea relating to the world of JRR Tolkien that you would like to write about? If so, the Third TORn Amateur Symposium will be running in the Reading Room in March, 2014. We hope to see you there!

I had completely forgotten about Frodo's conversation with Gloin. There are also references to the Beornings and the Men of Dale, the Bardings.

The joke is "changes" as in deviations from the book.

Without the high and noble the simple and vulgar is utterly mean; and without the simple and ordinary the noble and heroic is meaningless As far as any character is 'like me' it is Faramir–except that I lack what all my characters possess: Courage. A small knowledge of history depresses one with the sense of the everlasting mass and weight of human iniquity

I think the version we're seeing in the movies was neither the one he wrote down for Frodo, nor the one he was telling the little kids in FotR. Rather it's the version he told after half a barrel of Old Toby, a mushroom omelette and 20 pints of the Green Dragon's finest, and even he doesn't remember the telling of it.

about this line! I did have to chuckle at it Can't help but think it would be cool if they had filmed the Gloin and Frodo conversation, with Peter Hambleton and Elijah Wood during the filming of The Hobbit, and put it into a future edition of FOTR.

How much you wanna bet PJ knew about this and is going to mention it sometime in the future?
My name is Name, which, name-wise, is a much better name than your first name, last name, or name's name could ever plan on naming themselves.
