Anyone remember how many days did take AUJ to reach

Well... [In reply to] Can't Post

The AUJ article mentioned $180m for the domestic gross (i'm rounding up numbers) but it was at $190m as of that thursday, wasn't it? So the worldwide total should have been $534m. It made $10m on thursday domestically, can we say for sure it made at least $24m overseas on that same day, because we don't get overseas daily numbers? So it might have actually crossed $500m on wednesday.

Anyway, yeah, it was not 2-3 days but it crossed it sooner, maybe not 24 hours sooner but 20 hours. Tongue

That's pretty satisfying, then [In reply to] Can't Post

Considering the generally underwhelming critical response to Unexpected Journey, the fact that Desolation is managing to keep up is a reassuring sign that plenty of people out there are willing to give Jackson a second chance with this trilogy Smile

As well they should: it's a far better film.

But, we're not critics, are we, dormouse?

The general critical response to AUJ was way below that for LotR, and rightly so. I'm just happy that that hasn't hindered DoS.

Yes, AUJ's takings were impressive, but then they always were going to be. The real litmus test for this prequel-trilogy (just as it was for Star Wars) will be the second film (ie are people prepared to return), and so far it's looking pretty good Smile (especially considering the horrendous drop-off in profits for Attack of the Clones)...

Well, DOS does pay for AUJ [In reply to] Can't Post

At least in North America it's losing about 10% of its audience.

As for Star Wars, Phantom Menace was HUGE (in the USA at least). It's more difficult to keep your audience if you are that big. A similar thing happened with the old trilogy, A New Hope was much bigger than the subsequent films, even though it was not a disappointment like Phantom Menace.

IMO the critics were dead wrong about AUJ anyway [In reply to] Can't Post

and don't think that AUJ was a sure fire hit, even PJ has said something to the effect that "if AUJ had bombed, he wouldn't have had to worry so much about DOS..." or something like that. Anyone who has ever talked about the movie business seems to indicate it's a mystery what will work, and what won't.

Nor do I agree that DOS is "better" than AUJ, it's a different pace with different things going on. I would never trade any number of AUJ scenes for whatever some critic might think would be "better".....and considering the money AUJ made in theaters (along with the DVD/BR) seems a lot of folks agree with me. Personally I don't think it's worth comparing LOTR to the Hobbit very much, since the basis for the stories is so different.

Rightly so in that it wasn't as good as LOTR but I think the level of venom aimed at it by some wasn't deserved. It was IMHO a product of too many reviewers buying into the internet fanboy mentality(indeed many of them being internet fanboys these days) and pre judging, whether on the spilt into 3 films, the 3d, the high FPS or simply that Jackson had "lost it".

The RT T-meter especially is next to worthless these days, it can tell you whether something is a total failure or not but besides that expectation is really what desides score most of the time.

I think DOS not experiencing THAT much of a dropoff relative to AUJ shows you that many reviews and comments of certain very vocal people on the net didn't reflect the general opinion.

I think we've seen that DOS is pretty much garenteed to get at least $800 million at the box office. Whats unknown so far is what kind of legs it'll have, the latest US numbers do seem to suggest there a little better than AUJ.

Besides judging overall quality I think DOS by its nature is a more rewatchable film personally. LOTR could depend on its hardcore fanbase to get a lot of repeat views, I'm sure the Hobbit films get a bit of that but likely not the 5-10 views a lot of us gave each LOTR film. I loved the opening hour of AUJ personally but I can see why the average film goer wouldn't want to sit though it more than once.

DOS dropped on Friday compared to Thursday in North America, it's now behind Frozen. It won't quite match AUJ's 3rd weekend now. Still a better 3rd weekend drop than AUJ.

47 Ronin is getting some of the worst reviews I have ever read, including by Japanese reviewers. Too bad, as I was going to go see it for the visuals, but with the type of reviews it is getting, I may save my money. Perhaps WOM in Japan concerning DoS and comparison will help the Japanese market.
