I thought the movie was great but my affection has grown with subsequent viewings. The pace was intense and it is a lot to fully take in on the first viewing and I think John R. from his comments likely had the same experience. I am convinced when the EE comes out, it will speak better to those who wanted the quieter moments or character moments(which includes me). I have a feeling I will like it as much as a couple of the LotR movies.

Interesting article.
I noticed one mistake in the Smithsonian article though -
"Will Galadriel’s forces take on the Necromancer as detailed in the appendices and hinted at in The Hobbit when she reassures Gandalf, 'If you need me, call and I will come?'"
I think the author may be referring to when Celeborn and Galadriel enter Dol Guldur after the Ring is destroyed. There isn't anything in the text that suggests that "Galadriel's forces" ever took on the Necromancer, unless the author is mistakenly referring to the White Council itself as "Galadriel's forces".

to see, but with about 30 minutes worth of excess I could have done without, and 30 minutes short of material I really wish they had incorporated. "... If Tolkien fans largely account for the viewers who are still turning out, Jackson would probably do well to trim a bit of the action fat next time, while adding more of those Easter eggs for the nerds. “He really had a balance in the first movie, but in this one I think he decided to just listen to the critics and make Indiana Jones,” Rateliff says. “I liked it in its own terms, but it wasn’t the movie I wanted to see.”

...I commented on last years Smithsonian article, which was provided in a link on the blog page.
Anyway, as for the new article, I do agree with both Rateliff and Drout on the prominence of both the Orcs and Legolas, and the Smaug chase scene.
However, even though DoS strayed further from the book, I still think it was better than AUJ. At least DoS didn't have snot jokes, references to parasites, burping contests, food fights, and Goblin kings singing and dancing around like buffoons. I appreciated the darker tone.
