Sometimes the Oscars just baffle me [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm still flabbergasted that Weta's make up department didn't win last year. They lost to....Les Mis, I believe.

As much as [In reply to] Can't Post

I try not to let award shows bother me, it makes me sick to my stomach when these films aren't nominated/don't win. At the very least they would take the cake on costume/makeup! I wonder if they are pulling a LotR and saving all the awards for the final film?

The only category I thought the movie had a shot... [In reply to] Can't Post

I am pretty certain there will be Zero wins this year... and two noms for Production Design and Visual effects.

Sitting this year out... [In reply to] Can't Post

While this isn't the reason (it certainly helps), I don't plan on watching the Oscars this year. The choices they make are baffling most of the time, and the shows keep getting more and more embarrassing.

Even when deserving films do win/get nominated, it seems more like a mark of shame than honor these days. Tongue

Agreed, but [In reply to] Can't Post

I think honestly the score is the best chance for DOS this year. I don't think it will win, but I think it has the best chance of winning.

I want the team to get the recognition. And I want an Oscar party, darnit.

As pleased as I was when ROTK [In reply to] Can't Post

did so well, the 'Crash' win a couple years later made me realize how fickle and political and meaningless they really are. And I don't say that out of bitterness. I love a lot of expensive movies and I think the communal experience of art is important to society, but the money spent on awards shows really rubs me the wrong way. And when they started doing that horribly forced thing where presenters address the nominees to tell them how wonderful they are, I stopped watching. Haven't seen one in three years. Just struck me as being the worst sort of self-aggrandizement.

It shouldn't be nominated [In reply to] Can't Post

The makeup in the film is the same as the previous film. AUJ certainly deserved to win (Les Mis??? Really???), but you can't nominate a film for repeating what it already did.

Gave up on the Oscars a while ago [In reply to] Can't Post

Boring, too political (campaigning for consideration?) and if your read about how the voting is actually done it seems sloppy. The name of the Oscars still has prestige, but for me the reality of who gets what just seems too flaky. Seems the last time the Oscars were credible, LOTR was winning everything! I look to other awards now, like all the awards PJ got from the industry this past summer, as well as the AUJ artists.

I got tired of it [In reply to] Can't Post

Decades ago. All the glitz. I don't know. Hollywood goes on and on about how things should be and they go out and spend a zillion dollars on food, clothes, makeup and jewelry to congratulate themselves. Not a big fan.

I try not to inject my personal feelings to much into it but I just don't have a lot of patience with hypocrisy and self serving pats on the back. To me that's what the Oscars are.

Okay. I will retire now to my Hobbit Hole and will say nothing further. Sorry if I offended anyone.

I haven't watched any Oscars since ROTK's grand night. So I confess, I agree entirely with your take and despite all the superficiality and lack of focus (at times) on the art itself...I suppose its merely emotional attachment to the franchise (and to JRRT, as distant as the Estate is from the films - no criticism for it, just a statement) that makes me want them to be able to walk on stage and take that statue. Especially with fantasy in general always seeming to get the cold shoulder.
I feel divided on the issue: intellectually, it shouldn't matter. But in some way to me it does.

Welp, There's Always Next Year [In reply to] Can't Post

People are probably expecting the last Hobbit film to be the best (from an Academy standpoint anyway), so if these movies get any awards, it will be for TABA.

Not surprising... [In reply to] Can't Post

I did not catch many new make ups in DoS (someone correct me if there were more than these four.)

Thranduil, Beorn, Girion and the Master of Laketown are the four I can think of, since Evans and Lily seem to be wearing wigs and sport no applications on their face (beyond her ears). Outside of Beorn and the Master of Laketown, these make ups were relatively simple in their design (more natural, beauty make ups.) Thranduil's burns looked digital.

Had Azog and Bolg still been practical, I'd probably be a bit bummed. The make up I am still reeling over is Girion. If I did not know Luke Evans played him, I would have no idea it was him in the movie. I did recognize his profile, but not head on in the film.

Guess the Academy is moving toward more realism in the Make Ups Oscar.

Perhaps, Tammy and Peter King and their teams will be victorious next time. I'd like to see them win for TABA. As I suspect we'll see a lot of make ups in the last Hobbit film.

Right, Brethil, me too... [In reply to] Can't Post

because as a fan with as much insight as we all have into PJ's process, I love for him to get the validation we know he deserves- if only if because he seems like such a well-intentioned guy that tries to make the best movies he can make. That don't always come off fully, I have to add, even if they're almost always entertaining to me.

I also remember tuning in a few years ago to watch Scorsese win for The Departed, which was sorely overdue- but again, it was another political win. I loved seeing him finally get that recognition but it also rang false- since George Lucas, who relentless badmouths the industry and that part of the process (and who I also greatly admire, artistic warts and all) was a presenter.

I usually celebrate awards night with a classic movie instead.
