Daniel Reeve on DOS Logo design	Can't Post

I asked Daniel Reeve (the film's calligrapher and cartographer, and overall a great guy) about the DOS logo design, as there seemed to be some questions about it.

"I gave PJ four options for The Desolation of Smaug; this is the one he chose. [..] It's hand-drawn, but I used similar shapes to your Ringbearer font (which is itself based on classic typefaces that have been around for ages, of course)."

Just imagine my surprise when it was my Ringbearer font that proved to be template for it! And not the official font (called "Sauron") which was used for the movie logos and posters! The feeling is really humbling.

PS: I am preparing a font guide on the LOTR and Hobbit films (fonts used in films and their marketing, mind ye). Now I wanted to ask if there would be some interest in such a guide?

Must be really exciting for you to know that - and to know there's something of your work there every time you watch the film. Well done!

And yes, I think people would be interested in a font guide.

I've had a couple situations where I worked with Daniel on TORN projects, and we met for a drink the first time I went to NZ. He's a great person, and I'm thrilled that his font was selected. I have several of his fonts, and I think a guide would be very welll received!

Daniel's work was always selected for the film's logos, but this time he used a fan font (Ringbearer) as a base to design his logo. And this is what feels so great (because I am the author of Ringbearer). :)
