Smaug [In reply to] Can't Post

Everybody agrees with that. But the beast just did not want to give up
It is a nasty.... eh. little big fellow
But more serious what would you have skipped
I personally would not have skipped a thing
First he wakes up.. slowly
than we get to know that he knows many things
Than Bilbo can not instantly find the stone in such a PILE of gold
When he sees it.. the dragon knows that he sees it.. and starts to play some more
In the end the Dwarfs enter.. this can not be rushed
and than.. true.. in a fun and special way reminding us that it is a childrens story funny - slapstick things happen
Heeee. they have to happen. It is both an adult movie and a children's story
P.J. solved this in a fantastic way
We see the remainders of the lost Dwarfs
but by having this running around, we also see the FAST.. LARGE ness of the caves
He could have done this in a minute on film and I would have thought.. these are small caves
Now we get the feeting this place is ENORMOUS .. .as it is
Filmed in a way you make a kids movie. True.. but again .. it is a kids story and I enjoyed it.. so did the full cinema around me
I did not hear any sounds of "oh no" or "geeeeee" around me.. i heard laughter.. and happy noises of people seeing a good movie.
There was not a part in this Smaug scene that could have been shorter. Esp. as his name in in the title. .He deserved the time

before he dies

You can never have enough Smaug. [In reply to] Can't Post

His name is in the film's title after all.

"There is a long road yet," said Gandalf. "But it is the last road," said Bilbo.

I Would Agree [In reply to] Can't Post

But I would modify the statement to read, "As used in the climax of this film."

More Smaug in and of himself wouldn't have been bad, but there was some poor execution here IMO.

I wouldn't. My criticisms of the movie are few but this is actually one of them!

It did rather drag on... [In reply to] Can't Post

Instead of an hour in Bag End, we had an hour in Erebor! Tongue Good thing the dragon worked out as a highlight of the film.

My Top 5 Wish List for "The Hobbit"
5. Legolas will surf down Smaug's neck
4. Bilbo will be revealed to a Robot
3. Naked PJ cameo as Ghan-Buri-Ghan
2. Use of not only 3D, but smell-o-vision, plus the inclusion of axes coming out of the seats and poking the audience when appropriate
1. Not only keep the claim that Thorin & Co. ran amok in Mirkwood "molesting people", but depict said incident in vivid detail!!!!!

Smaug reminded me of a cat playing with a mouse. [In reply to] Can't Post

have you ever watched a cat do that? It can take forever. I imagine in the eyes of the mouse it is forever.

I loved that aspect of the movie. It gave me some great insight into the character of that dragon. It wasn't just a generic monster anymore; it was a true psychopath.

Cats don't bring home mice necessarily to eat. They usually bring them back to play with, at least my cats do. It's a sadistic game of Smaug's - he wants to be entertained. He's been lieing there for 60 years. And what better to have fun than keep the Dwarves running about Erebor. If he wanted them dead, he would've killed Bilbo there and then and waited for the Dwarves to appear. He's manipulative, sly and cunning. Unfortunately, he shouldn't have fled to Lake-town. That's Smaug's biggest mistake.

The 10 minutes of futzing around the furnaces [In reply to] Can't Post

was unnecessary, confusing (still not sure what the dwarves were doing, how they molded a giant statue of Thror, how they got the forge to the gallery of kings (or was the statue of Thror already there)? and how/why it remained a solid object then turned to molten gold.

Not to mention it's the same ending as "Alien 3".

Imagine that the gold had actually been ice. [In reply to] Can't Post

In Reply To

At that size, the water would have frozen on the outside in. The water in the middle would have remained liquid as there hadn't been enough time for the entire statue to freeze. When the mold is removed, the ice would have kept its shape, but would have melted because it wasn't entirely frozen. The centre would be warmer than the outside.

The same is true for gold. It kept it's shape for a while because the gold on the outside had solidified, but it still had a hot molten centre. It fell apart because it hadn't fully set, and thus the entire statue soon melted.

Yes, well said. [In reply to] Can't Post

And I expect that the statue had been planned before Smaug's arrival, commissioned by Thror himself. The mold was ready, the gold was in the furnaces, Thror's megalomania and gold-sickness was about to get its greatest expression. And then the dragon came.

Thorin has been brooding on Erebor ever since he was driven out. I bet he remembers everything that was going on like it was yesterday. He just remembered the abandoned statue project and thought (mistakenly) that if they could drown Smaug in molten gold it would kill him.

that the furnaces melted the gold, which flowed through the troughs to the gallery of kings and into the mold, which was left there waiting since before Smaug arrived.

IMO clumsily shot/edited, and subject to endless debate and confusion (especially in my theater as the credits rolled).

Golden idols [In reply to] Can't Post

In the book of Exodus those who turn away from God and what Moses is trying to teach them and worship golden idols are forced to wander in the desert for 40 years. It looks like Thror was going to create his own monument to gold and to himself and his “right to rule”, a sign of his deep sickness. He is thrown out of his kingdom by one with more power and an even worse thirst for gold and his people are forced to wander. (Now some would think that I meant that the Dwarves are the Jews and the Dragon is some other group. That is not what I meant. The analogy ends with those who worship gold end up getting into trouble and lose what is more precious - “food, cheer and a good song”. Hmmm, now doesn’t that sound familiar.)

I think they wanted to drown him in his own gold which is really interesting to me because they were not worried about "wasting" gold. They were willing to *spend* it to defeat the dragon. It was truly the only weapon they had - their knowledge of that metal and lots of it around. They had started the quest, they had woke the dragon, so they were going to take care of that dragon with the one thing they did know well - forging precious metal.

I would imagine that some of those dwarves worked with metal of some sort in their pre-quest lives. We know that Thorin was a blacksmith. They made their living in some way, correct? I think one of the shots shows Bifur playing with a mechanical toy he made (It might have been wooden but still shows an understanding of basic mechanics.) The mold and the machinery to cast it were already there and of course Balin, Dwalin and Thorin knew about it because they lived there. All that was needed was a basic understanding of the metal and mechanics and a willingness to do what they were told.

It's an interesting thing, isn't it? Think of what they used to try to drown a dragon. A golden idol of the king who went mad from gold sickness. Smaug has that same sickness doesn't he? If they had succeeded, they would have made him into a version of what killed him - a golden idol.

I loved this scene. I think it spoke to a lot of the character of Thorin's family and their subsequent fall from power. I think it encapsulated the sickness of the ruling family, the industrious nature of dwarves, and the motivations of the dragon all in one very entertaining scene.
