DOS poised for underwhelming domestic box office, International looks good Can't Post

They mainly attribute it to bad weather, which may keep many movie goers home. There has been a lot of talk of the International market expanding exponentially (especially China and Russia) even compared to last year, which will help make up for the domestic shortfall.

The way I see it [In reply to] Can't Post

is even if it is a weaker weekend opening, I'm betting it still grosses more than the first one. It is being received better and word to mouth does wonders. That is also just in the states. I coulda sworn I saw a thread saying it was doing better than last year in other countries.

Huge lines [In reply to] Can't Post

Last year there was no line at 6:30 for the 7 pm show....this year...50 people in line...We got seats and I went for popcorn....50 people in line for 7:30 show...when I came out of my showing there was a capacity crowd in line for the 10 pm show...this was at my local Kauffman Regal cinema in Astoria, Queens, NYC...

I wonder.... [In reply to] Can't Post

Even though I think it's a much better film than AUJ, it is very much a "middle section" film, with a start that has a quick and quiet flashback and ends on a cliffhanger and no resolution of....well, anything. I have to wonder whether it will get the repeat viewings even though it's stronger. Will the utter awesomeness of Smaug be enough to get people (other than us diehard fans who would go multiple times anyway) back into the theater to give it the legs needed to reach the big numbers?

I really hope so, but I've never seen a movie quite like this and I don't know how it would strike casual fans. Will they think once is enough and just start waiting for the resolution next year, or will they want to experience this part of the adventure over again? Can anyone who took non-fans or casual fans to see the film let us know what their reactions are? Do they want to see it again?

I do not think they want to see it again.. instantly
I think there will be a rise of sales in Blue Ray / DVD first of the other movies
As people get curious.

Domestic is usually... [In reply to] Can't Post

... dependend on the home country of the studio ;)

“All good stories deserve embellishment."

Praise is subjective. And so is criticism.

I am a fan of the movie [In reply to] Can't Post

But i will only be seeing it once and so will my friends!
I watched the first movie three times.
I will wait for the extended version and skip the blu ray film version.

My wife and I saw it last night [In reply to] Can't Post

We went to a 7:30 p.m. 2D showing. I was surprised at how crowed the theater was. It was a busy night at the box office.

I want to see it again - soon.

So does that mean... [In reply to] Can't Post

...something like matrix which is made at Fox Sudios in Sydney is an Australian film?? The whole notion of 'domestic' for international films like the Hobbit is a bit silly really, and Box Offce Mojo regards the US numbers for any film as domestic. I think a little bit of US exceptionalism rather than anything else. Bit like breaking the year up into US seosons rather than months which is understandable by all.

Nearly empty 6:30 show for me... [In reply to] Can't Post

But snow was already falling when I left for the theater and the local forecast is 7-12 inches overnight. The parking lot for the theater (a 14 screen mutliplex out in the suburbs) was very empty. I do think the weather in the opening weekend is having an effect in the US.
