Empire liked AUJ, too, but i believe they gave that one 4 out 5 (which is about how i feel about AUJ, too). they definitely had one of the best reviews of AUJ last year.

I just checked, and they gave AUJ 4 stars last year! Man, I'm really getting more and more pumped for this one!

I think there is a difference between trades and online critics when it comes to embargo dates

just read it. it comes from a more accepting place of AUJ than the other reactions so far, so that's a refreshing change of pace for the criticism involved, but echoes what most everyone else has been saying (well, besides DCole) that DoS represents an improvement in just about every way. still like the Variety review best, though, that one felt the most insightful.

2 reviews are there (I think it is variety and Holly report or empire) we need only 2 reviews to get based score of DoS.

We’ve seen many a dragon on screen before, but nothing with this much personality: Smaug is a startlingly well-executed creation, toggling between arrogance, indolence and rage as he uses his wyrm-tongue to try to draw out Bilbo 'The question of the dragon' has been raised since the Hobbit films were green-lit. Would the film-makers be able to set a new standard for dragons within a crowded field? Would Smaug become the epitome of greed as Tolkien wrote him? According to Empire, the answer is a big fat YES!
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak. Empire is an excellent site! Their review was both funny, informative and encouraging! The "dishwashing" and "ink-blot"-jokes were great! Hehe!

From Empire.. "Verdict Middle-earth's got its MOJO back. A huge improvement on the previous installment, this takes our adventurers into uncharted territory and delivers spectacle by the ton. And in case you were wondering, yes, someone manages to say the title as dialogue." WHOO WHHO WHO are YOU! Rock on PJ, Bomby loves it All good things come to those who wait LONG enough..

I hate to bring a downer on the festivities...but EMPIRE has a tendency to get a little...over enthusiastic about Big Films

By no means a bad thing (we are all a little over enthusiastic when it comes to Tolkien), but even as a subscriber to the magazine I don't really place much faith in their reviews (or at least their star ratings)-they did give Attack Of The Clones 5 stars on release...(And Pearl Harbour and Indiana Jones 4 4 stars-only to later downgrade all three reviews for the home video releases) Of course the many other positive reviews thus far are certainly heartening, so maybe (and hopefully) their excitement is justified. Then again I'm a glass half empty guy by nature, so each to their own.
I don't have much to say.

I'm usually always the one to play Devil's advocate, but with all the positive reviews I've seen so far and all of the good things I've been hearing, I choose to trust this review. Also, they have posted their review on Metacritic as 100, so that's also a good sign. Three reviews thus far on Metacritic, all positive.

Empire does tend to give big movies big scores... After all they want that set exclusive again next year, and they know what their readers want to hear. However they did give AUJ and TTT 4 stars on the first review (although they later updated TTT to 5 in the magazine).

Some warning signs in this review with empire saying that Beorn is given short shrift and the Gandalf at Dol Guldur confrontation feels brief and underdeveloped. Which fits with the responses from the guys at IMDB who felt likewise. On the other hand also very positive stuff on Smaug, Erebor etc.

I think there'll be a lot more to it in TABA with what is supposed to happen there.
Blunt the knives, bend them forks, smash the bottles and burn the corks. That's what Bilbo Baggins hates !

Especially considering EMPIRE is a huge movie magazine, I would think that they'd want to endorse Big Films. Of course, I tend to me on the less positive side too. Until I see the film for myself, I'm going to keep thinking it's a train wreck. If, by a slim chance, it turns out to be great, and the story is great (I don't care about CGI and design at this point) then I'll say EMPIRE is right. But until then...Yeah, I'm not positive at all.
