I really hope you are right this time [In reply to] Can't Post

But the reactions of industry persons we have so far are Empire, Entertainment Weekly, Variety

From http://www.metacritic.com/movie/the-hobbit-an-unexpected-journey/critic-reviews

EW gave AUJ 83 while Empire gave it 80. No wonder if they love DoS too.

Only good sign is Variety's reaction who gave AUJ 60

This time I see more consistency in reviews / reactions [In reply to] Can't Post

with no obvious difference between critics and fans.

Most of it is positive with a special delight in the dragon (awesome ... can't wait to see that beastie!) and agreement that there is more action and it entertains.

Someone doesn't like 3D with HFR (but I like how they recognized the existence of other options). Another guy seems to have a problem with middle-films (with two noted exceptions). The main problem appears to be a lack of resolution which seems to also serve to make people want to see the end a lot.

I'm not surprised so far!

Desolation of Smaug premiered last night. Early word from friends in attendance, even those that didn't care for AUJ, is it is great

It being entertaining and making people want for more [In reply to] Can't Post

are pretty much what I've hoped for, so having exactly those mentioned sounds almost too good to be true - part of me is scared of the later reactions being completely different!

But every word you say today
Gets twisted 'round some other way
And they'll hurt you if they think you've lied

Not before the first wave of reviews are up on RT. I am excited about the movie but the twittering hardly make me want to see the movie MORE (because- well, because that is not possible!) Wink

Some early thoiughts on reception and why I think DOS will be more satisfying than AUJ [In reply to] Can't Post

I think the main problem with AUJ is it's content - whilst I like the film, I don't love it (Although I'm yet to see the EE) but I think PJ and Co were in a bit of a quandary - Do they heavily edit the later events to fit it into two films or do they risk the problem of only having the first 6 chapters in the first film? The original plan seems to have been split the first movie after the barrels as that is basically half of the book but a lot happens between the Carrock and then so it would have been very condensed. I think they've bitten the bullet and gone with, we have so much footage and story for the rest of the tale that we cannot possibly fit it into two movies. This leaves AUJ a bit bare storywise but DOS sounds like its a much tighter film and therefore hopefully so should TABA. The meat of the story is in DOS. Beorn, Mirkwood, Spiders, Elves, Barrells, Laketown, Erebor, Dragon etc...and there is more a sense of menace - whereas Azog as a protagonist is the only thing that holds AUJ together in urgency. Linking him to Thorin and then to the Goblin King culminating in the final fight is necessary (although some may disagree) to keep that chase feel going throughout the movie. In DOS we have protagonists by the bucketload, Beorn, Spiders, Thranduil, Master of Laketown, Smaug. Things like the Trolls and Stone Giants are interesting diversions at best. So DOS should have a more dangerous feel to it.
From listening to the interviews of the cast I gleaned a number of things.
Speculative Spoilers follow:
1, The Dwarves will have a showdown with Smaug. According to Richard Armitage he lets this slip when discussing Thorin and the interviewer who had seen the film also confirmed this. This mean "Not at Home" is well, not likely to feature in it's book form and it sounds like Smaug will fly off to Laketown, I am more than convinced the Laketown battle will now be in the third film, although I could be wrong.
2, Azog will fight Gandalf. Manu Bennet confirmed this, although not where. Possibly Dol Guldur.
3, Kili will have a flirtation with Tauriel. Aiden Turner more or less confirmed this one. The interviewer said love triangle and Aiden looked surprised "Who's the third?" Legolas" said the interviewer. You don't have to be a genius to work that one out. Could be clunky, could be charming, we'll find out.
4, Bard will step up, Luke Evans when answering fan questions said this. Now does he mean, he'll have his famous scene in this movie or the next? Again, I'm not sure.
One thing I am sure about is that there is a lot more positivity around this film than the last. I've always suspected it would be so as more happens and we have at least 4 truly iconic moments in this one - whereas only Gollum had that honour in the first.
Really looking forward to this one, probably more than the third, I hope they have enough story left for the third, that is my only worry. If they leave Smaug v Laketown and Sauron until the third then there should be no such worries but the Battle of Five Armies is not enough to carry the third one alone.

Still roll on the 13th. Cannot wait.

The Goblin King [In reply to] Can't Post

Also had around 4-5 minutes, perhaps less, in the theatrical edition, so I don't think this is anything to worry about!
And i they count 5 min with scenes Beorn features in, and not just 5 min of the entire chapter, that doesn't sound to bad Smile

In an interview last night Richard Armitage called Smaug a quadruped, so I assume 4 legs.

Well, actually they did ask and he/she answered.// [In reply to] Can't Post

- Good morning.
- What do you mean? Do you mean to wish me a good morning, or do you mean that it is a good morning whether I want it or not? Or perhaps you mean to say that you feel good on this particular morning...or are you simply stating that this is a morning to be good on?

- Good evening.
- Yes, yes it is. Though I think it might rain later.

The problem with a sticky [In reply to] Can't Post

is that it's hard to see if new posts were made to the thread. After a while, people no longer see the sticky posts and they will make a new post, so the purpose of a sticky is lost.

We will be SWARMED with reactions, reviews and conversation over the next weeks, so just buckle up and enjoy the ride! The mods will be working hard to keep the forums as clean as possible. Smile

Have they pasted Azog over the crazed Thrain? [In reply to] Can't Post

That's one of the things I want to know. In the original AUJ trailer we saw Gandalf battling what looked like a crazed Dwarf (could only be Thrain). Now we know they've changed things...is it now Azog, who they have CGI pasted over the top of the original footage, much like they did in a couple of scenes of AUJ??
