The Hobbit: AUJ SEE Giftset: Unpacking Photos Can't Post

Received the TH: AUJ 3D+2D BluRay giftset yesterday (German version). Link

The giftset was packaged in a sizeable box. All the stickers (German age rating FSK, Digital Copy etc.) are on the plastic wrapping and not on the box itself.

The box in plastic wrap. The cardboard is good und sturdy.

And the backside with the technical information.

Having removed the shrinkwrap. First surprise: Sting has been slightly bent during transport! However, as you can buy the box in German retail stores, you can just pick the one box with an un-bent Sting. US customers are less lucky: as the giftset is amazon-exclusive, they cannot see what they get until unpacking it.

A view from the side: Carrock with the eagles.

The back side again. You can remove the technical information sheet (it's glued by two silicon glue points)...

...then you get a painting of Azog in the "Out of the Frying-pan" scene. If you don't like Azog, you can just glue the tech sheet back on.

The left side. Gandalf in Hobbiton. That's the same motif as on the DVD digipak.

The upper side. A view at the eagles from above. The bottom side is just black, so I didn't photograph it.

Overall impression: a good, sturdy box of good value. It is a worthy successor to the LOTR SEE giftsets.

The box is a bit larger than the LOTR giftset boxes.

Opening it.

Quality control passed, very good.

The figurine is contained in a half polystyrene, half transparent box. With LOTR, they used to attach the Sméagol figurine with cable binders and glue it to the floor of the box...

Removing the plastic encasing.

And checking out the figurine. I have to tell that it looks marvellous, a good Weta craftmanship. The real deal looks even better than these macro shots.

Gollum looks good, too. The detail level on the eyes is amazing at this scale.

Gollum from above.

A nice detail: a fish skeleton and some bones.

The tin plate is covered by protective foil that should be removed.

Again, the total view. The Sting is a little bent. However, it is made of elastic material so you can just bend it back.

A side view. Also impressive: the amount of detail on the actual rock.

The rear view.

And, once again, from the side.

The base view with a faximile of the signature of the sculptor. There is no limitation number; however, this was also the case with LOTR (only the tie-in figurines were limited, like Gollum and Minas Morgul).

A dramatic view from above...

And another very nice detail likely to be overseen: the One Ring lying at Bilbo's foot!

"Bagginses? What are Bagginses, preciousss?"

And now for the disc itself. First of all, a digipak would be more worthy of such a release. However, the slipcase does look good, especially with the lenticular artwork.
Remark: in Germany, only the German giftset version has a lenticular artwork. The standard 3D+2D edition only has a glossy metallic version of the same artwork.

The back side with the acorn, which can also be found on the UK DVD box at the front. The acorn is slightly embossed, as well as the ornaments at the front...

...and the golden film title at the side.

The BluRay amaray is however rather weak, especially as the German FSK rating is just printed on the artwork. A digipak would be better. Also, in Germany the LOTR SEE BluRays were not supplied in black amaray cases anyway.

The rear. A bit overloaded in my opinion.

The interior. I removed the Digital Copy leaflet. Alas, no real booklet.

The green FSK logos are more decent-looking than the many BBFC logos at the UK version. The US ones without any ratings look definitely the best.

However, this edition will be mainly for watching. As for my LOTR collection vitrine, there will be an honorary space for the UK DVD digipak set in there.
