Middle-earth's Diner is back! Denny's new Hobbit menu is available in their restaurants from today. Judging by all the preparation and hard work Denny's have been putting in over the past months, and to which we at TheOneRing.net have been privy, this should be a fun and tempting menu! In their official press release, Denny's say: "The quest for Middle-earth inspired adventure begins today at Denny's, as America's Diner celebrates the long-awaited release of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, a production of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures (MGM). Bold new menu features seven authentic dishes inspired by The Hobbit films, and a bounty of exclusive movie content available only in-restaurant ... "We're thrilled to bring the taste of Middle-earth back to America's Diner," said John Dillon, vice president of marketing for Denny's. "Last year's menu attracted both Denny's guests and fans alike with a combination of movie-inspired elements and traditional holiday flavors. This year we're elevating the experience with the introduction of adventurous new flavors, exciting exclusive content and once-in-a-lifetime prizes, taking our guests on a truly authentic dining journey." The epic adventure doesn't stop there; an augmented reality interactive placemat features movie images and concept art, an exclusive behind-the-scenes film content piece and a sneak peek at the making of Denny's movie-themed TV spot. Ensuring this adventure would be authentic to true fans, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Advisory Board, an exclusive group of influential The Hobbit movies-oriented media outlets [including TORn], curated by Denny's, weighed in on select movie-inspired elements, including the development of menu names and selection of the top five entries from "The Search for Middle-earth's Greatest Fan" video contest. One grand prize winner will be selected by Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson to receive a trip for two to attend the film's world premiere screening. Four runner-ups will receive free Denny's Grand Slams for one full year."
The new menu includes favourites from last year's Hobbit goodies, such as the 'Build Your Own Hobbit Slam', but which this time includes Honey Cake French Toast, Sweet Potato Pecan Pancakes and a Hearty Breakfast Sandwich. There's a spicy new 'Smaug's Fire Burger', and this writer for one is happy to see that 'Radagast's Red Velvet Pancake Puppies' are back on the menu; sinfully delicious! Even as we speak, TORn staffers are busy looking at Denny's top ten choices from the submitted videos in the contest to find Middle-earth's greatest fan! As part of the Advisory Board, our top five choices from these ten will be sent along to Peter Jackson, for him to make his choice! We'll also be bringing fans more chances to win Denny's exclusive The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug golden coins. Meanwhile, there's more fun to be found on Denny's website and social channels, which contain a variety of film-inspired games, activities and a series of "Elvish Made Easy"ť posts! You can take a look at a couple of these language primers - made with expert advice! - here and here. Get ready to order your pancakes in Elvish - or just go with the Dwarven manner and dispense with formalities, as you tuck in to a hearty feast!

or is this text almost impossible to read because of all kinds of funky, spurious letters and symbols? Apparently, something can't recognize an apostrophe or quotes, but is perfectly comforable with letters like: € â ś and  ????????????????? (I hope the software knows what a question mark is.)

Sorry, front page news stories are posted from WordPress which has a different character set from the boards. So a lot of punctuation ends up being replaced by weird symbols when stories get posted here. As Magpie said, the Admins try to catch News from Bree stories and edit them into readability but sometimes (as when another board has been ridiculously busy) we miss them. A post on the Feedback board will always get our attention ASAP.

We visited our nearest Denny's today. The Honey Cake French Toast is more cake than french toast. Also, the Hearty Breakfast Sausage is good, but not quite up to the English-style Shire Sausage that was introduced in last year's The Hobbit menu. And, no trading cards.

Trading cards don't seem to be a part of this year's Hobbit promotion from Denny's. Our experience with the chain is very uneven. We get great service at our nearest Denny's, but have had terrible service at several others. It all depends on how well each individual restaurant is managed.

I thought I'd heard about cards this year but looking around the net, I can't find mention of them so I must have mis-remembered that. I've heard from some people that they can get good food from Denny's. Perhaps there are franchise holders that own all the Denny's in a large swatch across some areas because it never had a good rep in Michigan and I went to one here in Minnesota where the service and food was so abysmal, I swore I'd never step foot in one again. (and I can cut places a lot of slack even when I'm irritated so believe me when I say it was bad.) I broke that oath when I went last year and when I think of the (much better) food I could have eaten at a half dozen other establishments, it was kind of sad. (Since spending money for 'luxuries' like eating out isn't something we do lightly) I think I might have sighed and said, 'oh well' if only I could have walked out with a trading card for my memento box. As it was, I got to look through a fairly grubby/sticky Middle-earth menu for my time and mediocre food. lol.
