This is my not so professional translation of an article in Swedish magazine Nöjesbladet:
Mikael Persbrandt: I spoke to a wolf
The Swedish actor talks about his preparations for The Hobbit.
He plays a bear. Therefore, Mikael Persbrandt chose to prepare for The Hobbit by hanging out with the wolves at Kolmården (a Swedish zoo). ”The leader of the pack spoke to me”, he says in the book ”The Hobbit Official Movie Guide”.
All the secrecy is over. Now Mikael Persbrandt speaks out and tells his story about the shooting of the film series ”The Hobbit”. In the book ”The Hobbit Official Movie Guide” Persbrandt reveals that he prepared for the role of Beorn by socializing with the wolves at Kolmården.
Chatted with a wolf
It ended with a one-on-one with a wolf. ”The leader of the pack came up to me and talked to me. He really boosted my ego”, says Persbrandt in the book.
Mikael Persbrandt was never afraid of the wolves. He relied on his super physique. ”I have strong faith in myself. I thought, if anything happens and I’m in serious danger, then I would be able to snap the wolf’s neck”, he says.
But there were more to the preparations than just the meeting with the wolves. To get the hang of Beorn’s special bear voice, Mikael Persbrandt practised by listening to bear sounds. ”There were thousands of sounds. Angry, tired, sad – even a horny bear. When I practised the bear sounds, I thought I was on ’Candid Camera’”, he says.
”I got a nose job”
Every day during the shootings started with over two hours in make-up. ”I got a nose job and new teeth. That is something that happens to a lot of people in Hollywood. They’re fixing a lot of things there. Luckily enough, I can take it off when I go home”, he says with a laugh.
When the first pictures of the character Beorn leaked, the critique was harsh. Persbrandt himself describes his costume in a more lighthearted tone. ”Beorn is a little bit like a mix between a 70’s heavy metal artist and a horse running wild on the Argentinean savanna”, he says.
Only a week after Persbrandt visited the wolves at Kolmården, a keeper died after a wolf attack. Persbrandt carried the tragic incident with him in is interpretation of Beorn’s animal side. ”There is always something ticking in their heads. You just have to stumble to trigger their reactions, and then you’re dead. Super dead. The same thing goes for Beorn”, he says.
Now now Bill, you swore this was a battle between warriors, not a bunch of miss nancies, so warriors is what I brought

Hanging out with real wolves to be able to think like an animal? Amazing! I'm now even more looking forward to Mr. Persbrandt's performance, regardless of any possible character design issues!

So impressed - always love it when actors go 200% in preparing, and talking to wolves, spending time with wolves! And talking to the alpha wolf - wish there were pictures of that. Persbrandt sounds like another amazing guy and hope for some more interviews with him.

I've never actually seen any of his work, but I keep hearing that he's a great actor (although one person on some message board referred to him as "the Swedish Charlie Sheen", whatever the hell that means).

But I know a Lot of his films and always like his acting.
He often plays Outlaws, kind of. Maybe that's why... ;)
