what i like about the song, and im in no means a big ed sheeran fan, is that it reminds you of the genocide smaug creates for a whole people, its has to be epic sadness and complete utter futility.
sometimes you forget that in your eagerness to see smaug in all his glory, he is utter evil.
and the song reminds me of that

What does he wants to tell us between the lines? What could possibly happen at the end of DOS? I don't think that it will be Smaugs death but his attack on Lake-town indeed.

That's crazy!! They waited this long!? I think the song turned out great and as a musician myself I am a firm believer in letting inspiration and your gut be your guide, but on a 500m dollar movie it's pretty funny that they waited til the "last minute," to put together the end credits song.

I really thought there wasn't much chance DOS would end without the death of Smaug, but after reading PJ's comments I'm not so sure anymore. It sounds almost like the movie will end on a very emotional and dark note. I picture it like this: We see the dwarves drive Smaug from the mountain. Smaug, now absolutely enraged, looks at Laketown and decides to unleash his deadly fury upon it. He flies off. Switch to Laketown. The people are going about their day or evening as normal. Suddenly someone shouts out that they see a light on the horizon. Some people are excited thinking it's the gold from the mountain. Then, as the light grows ever closer, they realize the truth...it is not gold, but rather death in the form of wings and fire. Smaug's shape now becomes clear as he speeds towards Laketown. We see the faces of the people fall as they begin to panic. Just as Smaug is about to reach the city, and we hear the roar of his flame reach the boarder, the sceen cuts to black, we hear screams and the credits roll as the song plays.
Haunting way to end it but that's what it looks like to me.

... I really hope this song will get some recognition.
Great idea to have a song that is a direct and personal reaction to seeing the movie.
It is beyond me how easily some talk it down as modern radio pop trash. It is imho much more interesting and deep than the obious choices of a deep male choir or voice.

hmmm i dont think itll get that far, but i do agree that there i s a real emotional end!
in the song theres alot of talk about brothers dying? and fire burning the mountain! which could be a clue?
orrr radagast? could he cop it, or even tauriel?
i just dont think theres enough time to build up the laketown stories to go and destroy the town all in the last part of the film!

I think the ending will be even more effective if the film ends with a deliberately ambiguous shot of Laketown lit by a strange golden light from afar which could be mistaken for sunrise mingled with dreams of a golden future by the people of Laketown but, as the audience would know, will bring the fiery apocalypse that is upon them.

I like it.
(It's funny that the song has a sparse not overly produced sound, which is in contrast to much of the heavy use of CGI in the films).

I really like this song, the more I listen to it, the fonder I am of it.
"Ed" has actually seen the movie and has drawn from his emotional experience of it and poured it into this song. I think we are in for a very sad ending that will tug at our hearts. We read books and watch fantasy films to help us escape the horrors that happens in our own world. But I think as you say the " genocide smaug creates for a whole people " I believe will catapult us back to the sadness of are own world, because we do have dragons in our world too. We will probably be more appreciated of the song when we have sat through the movie. Bring the tissues I reckon.

And since I was told in another closed thread I shouldn't judge the song's perception too positively because of TORn I want to add that I actually judged that from other boards and there it was mainly positive, though many question whether it will work in combination with the actual movie.
The songs had choices for those movies have always been rather unconventional. I am glad they did it again. And it is good for marketing, too.

What's the point? It comes across too fan-ish, for my liking. says a man who spends a lot of time making geeky observations on a fansite! just pulling your leg lots of dislike for the song and vid, odd i never even noticed the end credits songs much! the last one was just as cheesy imo.
I meant the video was pointless - it has nothing to do with the song or the film. It's not something you could watch over and over again. And don't get me wrong, I think the song is fine. And if it's the only thing from the film I don't like, I'll be over the moon!

I didn't dislike the video, the scenes of Smaug destroying Dale certainly got the point across about what the song is saying about seeing fire, and I actually quite liked the simplicity of it, but I had kinda hoped for some DOS clips too. It's like, this is a song for the credits of DOS and you show nothing but AUJ clips? Non-fans might get a little confused IMO.
