In Singapore? Lucky you "F" magazine out this Friday - link elves and dwarves covers! Can't Post

http://www.fmoviemag.com/c/news/item/1442-rivalry-between-middle-earths-elves-and-dwarves-takes-over-f***-magazines-november-cover

Apologies don't know how to make this clickable, managed to read the RA/Thorin piece via Facebook - very good but *SPOILERS!!!!!* - anyway want this as looks like they interviewed Lee Pace too. Don't ever remember seeing this magazine in U.S. bookstores but maybe I can hunt up a specialty shop.

Thank you! [In reply to] Can't Post

Notice they vanished Fili and Kili from the banner pic for the article - what I wouldn't give for the original Photoshop layer files. Thank you for the clickie sometime I have to spend more time tinkering and/or ask mods for help getting images up - sigh.
Great, insightful article and just love RA for researching his part, CARING so much. I'll bet Lee Pace's interview is equally interesting, whenever I can read it.

OK, Entertainment Weekly is a U.S. pub, time to step up to the plate with some excellent DOS articles!

Clearest hint yet about the meeting in Bree? [In reply to] Can't Post

The RA interview gives a clear hint to the fact that Gandalf's meeting with Thorin at Bree may form part of the opening to DoS:

Quote
"Well, the second movie kind of starts with a little reminder of why they need
to be on the quest, and why it's so important to reclaim their kingdom. It's
very much about Gandalf creating an environment in which the dragon becomes a
part of the threat against Middle-earth rather than just against the Dwarves. So
Thorin understands his part in that through the beginning of the film."

Armitage also reveals that

Quote
"Thorin will get to the mountain, and he'll open the door he'll face the dragon at the end of the second movie."

"Choosing Trust over Doubt gets me burned once in a while, but I'd rather be singed than hardened."

Online? [In reply to] Can't Post

I'd love to read all the interviews but I've never seen "F" magazine in any store I've ever been to. Will any of the other interview's other than RA's be made available online?

My favorite speech from the entire LOTR series: Sam:“It’s like in the great stories Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were, and sometimes you didn’t want to know the end, because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was after so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come and when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those are the stories that stayed with you, that meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand, I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances at turning back, only they didn’t. They kept going because they were holding on to something.” Frodo: “What are we holding on to, Sam?” Sam: “That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo, and it’s worth fighting for!”

You're welcome [In reply to] Can't Post

I always use the Advanced Editor view, so when I type or copy/paste a URL, it automatically creates the link. You can also look in the Welcome section, under the FAQs, there's info about creating links and also a section about posting photos. I had to read that very carefully to figure out how to size pictures and the specific steps for getting the photos in the post as it's a little tricky. I'm sure the mods can help too since it sounds like people use a lot of different browsers.

And yes, agree with you on how great it is that RA puts in so much effort and research into his role. Boy does it pay off! I too get EW and am waiting for their DOS articles (I still have last year's magazines on my coffee table so Thorin looks at me every day) Sly

You know what's really interesting [In reply to] Can't Post

I totally interpreted that first paragraph as Gandalf recounting a visit to Dol Goldur and his encounter with Thrain, or possibly the High Fells with Radagast. I didn't even think of Bree. (I haven't read the Empire article, so don't know if I may be missing a spoiler).

Kili not having a beard is still a travesty... [In reply to] Can't Post

It is glaringly obvious especially whenever he is shown with Thorin and Fili.
Kili would have turned out alright with a beard, and could still have come across successfully as young and inexperienced.

Not sure if that works. [In reply to] Can't Post

Remember from AUJ that the Company currently does not know what happened to Thrain (except Gandalf). Bree is suppose to be with Thorin, so not sure the story will be told to Thorin at that time

So that's what advanced editor is for!!! (: [In reply to] Can't Post

Thank you for that suggestion - don't consider myself completely computer-dumb but just haven't sat down and worked with this site enough. I LIKE having Thorin and the dwarves around, and reminders of AUJ, so have my framed Thorin, AUJ, and dwarf posters, and my Orcrist letter opener and Erebor keychain in the TV room. Mixed in with ocean stuff and an aquarium and books - works for me and my "TV cave" Cool

Yes, RA's commitment and evidently just sheer love and enjoyment of this role (plus charisma and being an incredible, intelligent actor) IMO helped vault this part from what I think (if cast differently) might have been a more garden-variety tough dwarf (not THAT much different from any other older tough guy leader) into an iconic-made-this-part-your-own-jaw-dropping-magnificence. Stunning coloring and looks (and a killer voice) don't hurt but that doesn't mean much without the depth of performance and feeling - for me will always be the King Under the Mountain.

*Cough* assume someone with a scanner will probably get busy at some point and generously share, if you keep checking the net and FB - BUT I still wish I could get my hands on the originals. What little I've seen of this magazine from last year re AUJ was really good - this magazine needs to go global!

Never think of the beard thing at this point [In reply to] Can't Post

Tho for me I never did - beard length or not, what the book says or or not, it just doesn't compute - unless none of the dwarves had beards. Re Kili do know from the WETA books they tried prosthetics, tattoos, etc. with him and it just wasn't working.

I was lucky [In reply to] Can't Post

the first time I logged in, I was automatically put in Advanced Editor, so I didn't have to figure out the link stuff. I'm fairly computer competent as well, but not so much with photo editing, so really had to study Magpie's instructions to get the hang of posting photos on this site. And yeah, it helps if you can take some time to learn those.

Unfortunately, I don't have a tv cave in addition to my living room, so I have to be more subtle with my AUJ stuff. My Thorin lego figure is very inconspicuously perched on my tv stand, and the magazines and books are tucked away as well. I really want to get some of those new posters, but I don't know where I'd put them.

As for this, all I can say is, ditto!

Here it is the wonderful interview with Lee Pace [In reply to] Can't Post

about Thranduil. Finally a full interview about him! (So happy!)

He really, really understands Thranduil, i believe, from what interview tells us, that he is going to give a fantastic performance

I'm in Advanced Editor, and clickability still doesn't work for me. [In reply to] Can't Post

I think it may be because I work on a Mac rather than a PC.

Oh, and absolutely agree with your comment about Thorin (as usual). He's just amazingly good and right in the part. Did you get hold of the Thorin Empire magazine cover? It's very silvery and really stunning, even though I'm not sure whether it is a good idea for him to hold the blade of a sharp sword in his left hand the way he is doing. WinkUnimpressed

Oh interesting [In reply to] Can't Post

I didn't realize there was a difference between a Mac and a PC. I used another PC on a different browser once, and it put me into regular edit mode.

I'm going to look for the Empire magazine tomorrow - I've never seen it on stands here, so may have to poke about a bit (and I saw someone else's comment that it may not be in the US for a few more weeks yet). I'm still bummed I missed out on last year's Thorin cover as I love that shot. I thought this year's pose was a little unique, but didn't really process the whole sharp-blade-in-hand thing til you pointed it out! Which reminds me, I still don't know how he managed to un-sheath it in the troll cave without slicing his fingers!

Re. Thranduil, that's a great interview with His Magnificence [In reply to] Can't Post

He seems like someone who has really thought about the role and obviously knows the source material, alluding to the fact that Thranduil is a legendary warrior who fought alongside his father in the Last Alliance, etc.

He has even noticed that Tolkien 'loved the wild' – which always struck me also when reading the professor's descriptions of the various environments of Middle-Earth. And I love the statement that the Elves are 'not like people, they're more like tigers and blizzards and old, old trees'. Very evocative.

Aha – I notice he will be in the ruins of Dale. I wonder when this will be?

Thanks so much for posting this.

I'd like to post an image here [In reply to] Can't Post

so that's why I love all the tips - I HAVE tried, but guess there is more to it than getting the size down. Tho I must say folks here are amazingly, lightning fast when some good info and images come out - srsly don't know what I would have done without TORN this summer - there are other ME boards but this one IS the best. Speaking of which need to borrow the Thorin banner image and turn it into phone wallpaper.....

BTW - yes, call it my "TV cave" but it's a finished basement! MY "living room" is more like some people's foyer or closet, think Bilbo's was larger *grins*. Guess there are a wide range of groups like any site but I'm firmly in the Orcrist-is-a-big-purchase-do-you-really-need-it category - or I'd have one already. But, yes, I think I do and the holidays are coming, and so is DOS - what better way for me to celebrate, except for lots of DOS viewings. (TORN had pics a bit back from a collector with a finished room with LOTR decor *envy*.)
But I am MAKING room for the "gold" Thorin/Bilbo poster (from the German game box), always loved that, happily Amazon U.S. has it now and have it on order.
